I’m not a Byrd hater, not even close. But you have to feel like every 1-2-3 inning he gives us is like a little surprise present you find in your mailbox.

This is the subhead for the current lead story on mlb.com:
After dropping three games to the Twins, the Sox turn to reigning AL Cy Young winner Josh Beckett.
by SuddenSam on May 13, 2008 7:19 PM EDT 0 recs
I remember loading Paul Hoynes’ blog on cleveland.com the minute the Cy Young award was announced, and the headline was “CC unable to edge Beckett” or something. Then the page failed to load and it was immediately fixed.

Wow. Hegan just pointed out that over the last games, the Indians team batting average is .199. Yet, the team is 6-4.

This franchise has a history with the player-manager. I nominate Victor Martinez for player-hitting coach.
by Fiddlesticks on May 13, 2008 7:21 PM EDT 0 recs
Heh, I bet he’d start Marte if he were the manager too.

You have no idea the physical toll that three vasectomies have on a person

Normally I think Underwood is reading too much into things, but hopefully this team was at least a little embarrassed when Wedge called them out last night.

“Now maybe I’m reading too much into this.” and then pointed out that Hafner slammed his fist into his open palm after rounding first. As if to suggest he’s relieved over getting something going early.
Writing it does make it seem silly. I just like that we’re on the board early.

I think Jake was asking what Wedge said. At any rate, that’s what I’d like to know.

“Our approach was as poor if not the poorest I’ve seen here all year,” Wedge said. “No excuses for it. No excuses. We were giving away at-bats all night long.”

Whoops. Didn’t even think that maybe someone didn’t see it. It was my favorite quote from yesterday’s sports world other than “Lebron James, with no regard for human life…”

I’ve probably used it conversationally four or five times since it happened.

I like this one:
“It was a triple play,” Wedge said matter-of-factly, as if such a thing happens every night. “I’m not going to talk about it. We didn’t win the game.”

What I want to know is, what about YOUR approach, Eric Wedge? Do you think that you can just play Jason Tyner without everyone else giving up?

nice ab by grady.
come on hafner, do something here.
FINALLY.
fine, let Blake play 1B and FIRE GARKO
by Brick. on May 13, 2008 7:29 PM EDT 0 recs
Yep, I mean if Wedge is dying to play Blake, he can sit Gark for a little while, and give Marte a week of starts. But that would be CRAZY.

Oops, missed that one.
Ha ha, Byrd struck you out.
by dgcambridge on May 13, 2008 7:30 PM EDT 0 recs
If Westbrook is healthy, it’s appropriate to deal Byrd in the next month. Laffey is ready, Sowers deserves another shot, Brian Slocum wouldn’t be awful for a few starts, and that’s before I even discuss Adam Miller and David Huff.

1) defense is a beautiful thing.
2) grady’s arm looks fine when frank thomas is running.
by xrickx on May 13, 2008 7:33 PM EDT 0 recs
frank thomas looked friggin ridiculous “sliding” into home. like when a cartoon character starts running but the legs just churn and he goes nowhere

2. Boy I wish we’d scored that one two or three innings earlier.

ESPN’s Buster Olney makes a point to say that this trade idea is pure speculation rather than anything he’s heard.
