New thread = getting runners home from third with less than two outs.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I didn’t realize Andy Call was leaving the Canton Repository. I didn’t read him daily, but I thought he was one of the better Tribe beat writers.
That just sounds too much like suppository, I’m sorry.

ive been seeing rumors…involving atkins and laffey. they probably dont hold water, but still…just the thought scares me.
Given how virulently that’s spread around, we should come up with a total bullshit rumor of our own & see what we can do with it. Aaron Herr & Danny Sandoval for Pujols is the latest I heard, how about you?
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh
Do I have to kill this every day? No rumors, just wild, baseless speculation by the irresponsible schmoes over at MLBTR.

I’ve been giving you a hard time, but you really do need to hang around here more. This rumour has been mocked to death on LGT.

If you spend less time spreading baseless rumors that you yourself admit don’t hold water, you might have more time for keeping up with reality.

I think we discussed the trade rumors in an actual fanpost, but I forget which one.

this is probably the first time ive actually been a ‘live commenter’ during a game.
Let’s hope our guys quit struggling so that doesn’t happen. i would hate to be like Detroit trading away Jurrgens.
with each of these last outings from Laffey, his value to the franchise has increased dramatically. He’s got two things which mean he won’t be traded:
a) he’s doing well and likely to keep getting better (sort of, anyway)
b) he’s cheap for the next 4-5 years
Mastny in for Miller in Buffalo. Final line was 6 innings, 2 hits, 2 Ks, 2 BBs, 2 ER (both in the first).
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Especially since both those walks were the first two batters of the game & he really settled down after the first inning.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Yes. But, that’s a starter’s pattern, not a relief pitcher. He’s got to get the first guy to be an effective reliever.
I’m not super worried about him contributing this year as a reliever. If he can stay healthy the rest of the year as a starter & then take Byrd’s spot at the end of the rotation next year, I will be perfectly happy with that.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I’m going to count that as a Peralta triple, and then, in the same play, Peralta hitting himself in from third base with nobody out.

You know what movie was disappointing? Along Came Polly. The movie should be better than it is. Ben Stiller is playing the dorky but caring guy who tries too hard (or the same guy he has played in every movie he’s ever been in). Jennifer Aniston is playing the attractive girl. Plus, it has Phillip Seymour Hoffman, so you know its Oscar-worthy. Yet, it was horrid. I wasn’t going in expecting a cinematic masterpiece, but I thought it would at least be funny. Instead it was just uncomfortable and painfully slow. Anyhow, this review brought to you by flipping through during the injury delay and seeing that it was airing on USA right now.

I’ve been doing some research on players who played for both the Indians and Reds, and I may put up a fanpost (should it be a fanshot?) later.
Anyway, I found two players who were all-stars for both teams. There may be more, but it’s a pretty good trivia question. Any guesses?
Wow Bo Diaz was not that good. How did he make 2 All Star squads?
I mean I know how he made it for us, because our teams back then were god-awful … but twice?
The best part of cryptic time machines like this is I’m sitting here like, “What’s so funny?” And then, that happened.

As bad as Raffy has been, he hasn’t blown a save for us that has led to a loss since he took over about a month ago. In his only four save situations of the season, JoeBo blew two of them leading to losses. I don’t get it.

He’s making, what, 380,000 this year? I assume he’s still in his 20s. Athletic. What’s so bad about that?
Not to mention his old first round bonus. If he invested it, he can live comfortably off dividends. Ohh, I gottcha
I’m worried about interleague play. If the offense is struggling, there’s going to be the temptation to use a pinch-hitter for the pitcher in tight spots, which takes the starting pitcher (the Indians’ strength) out of the game early. Of course, there’s a chance it never unfolds this way….just saying…

When was the last time that happened? Anyone know? Before Wickman maybe?
Clearly this is Laffey’s fault for not going all 9 innings.

Ah, Fernando Cabrera. Remember when we were all sad we had to let him go? Yeah.

Alright you guys have to admit it’s kinda funny that our starting staff goes a zillion innings without giving up a run, and our bullpen can’t even give us one.
To think I had to miss most of the 9th inning fun for this:

Never. After all the crap their fans talked about after their “great” trades it would be fitting for them to toil away at the bottom for the entire year.
Unless they trade for some pitching help, though. I bet they could trade…um…..I don’t even know anyone but Rick Porello in their system right now.
many times. i taught at central washington, in ellensburg, briefly a few years ago and would make sure to catch a bite to eat in roslyn anytime i drove to seattle. you can still most of the old landmarks from the show: storefronts, joel’s office, radio station, moose mural, etc.
Yeah, I went one time a couple of years ago, just a quick drive-through. Pretty cool for a fan.

Laffey may have retained his place on the roster with his performance today.
I would trust him more than Betancourt
Why didn’t they stay with Wedge’s press conference? Showing updates is something STO could do anytime afterwards. What, they don’t want to cut into the poker tournaments or D’Arcy Egan?

Pawlowski just said Tyner was “sent down,” but I’m not going to assume he knows what he’s talking about until I see a press release.
by Fiddlesticks on May 15, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
The crazy thing was that Tyner was given a 40-man roster spot for these few days. Why not just bring up Brad Snyder again if defense/pinch-running was needed? Because his stats didn’t warrant it? Neither did Francisco’s, at least this year. I’m not saying I care if they DFA Tyner and somebody claims him. Just seems odd to jettison a guy over a useful few days in the Bigs.
this isnt totaly uncommon for the FO, they have called up people to give them a few days on the roster (i.e. earn major league salary for a few days) and then let them go. Am trying to think of the pitcher they did it for last year (Sikorski maybe). Just a way of saying thanks to the guy before letting him go i guess.
When does Laffey pitch, though? Or does that mean we don’t think Westbrook’s going to make his next start with the big club?
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I guess Westbrook is going to make a rehab start on Saturday or Sunday, depending on what Soloff thinks is best and how Jake feels after his simulated game the other day.
Because the offday on Monday, Carmona could come back and pitch on normal rest on Thursday the 22nd followed by Lee on normal rest on Friday the 23rd in Texas. But Byrd/Sabathia won’t be ready to follow them on normal rest due, so a 5th starter would be needed on Saturday the 24th. That would give Westbrook time to get back, assuming all goes well.
Or, you can not mess with rotation, let Sowers throw tomorrow followed by Carmona and Lee, ignore the offday, give Byrd and Sabathia and extra day of rest, and then let Laffey throw on on the 22nd. That’d be Jake on track to return on the 27th. Or, if Jake is ready, you let him pitch on the 22nd and send down Laffey then.
From CBSSportsline.com, on the starters’ scoreless streak:
The streak was the longest by Cleveland’s starters since Bob Lemon, Gene Bearden, Sam Zoldak and Satchel Paige strung together 47 scoreless innings in August 1948—all threw complete game shutouts. It was the longest by a major league team in one season since a 54-inning streak by Baltimore’s starters from Sept. 1-7, 1974, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
They peg the streak at 44 1/3 innings. The math on that suggests that neither Friday’s fifth inning (a run scored with one out) nor today’s second inning (I forget how many, if any, outs there were when the run scored) are included in whole or in part. So the streak started at the beginning of Friday’s sixth inning, and ended when the side was retired in the first today, and looks like this:
Sabathia (Friday): 2
Laffey (Saturday): 7
Carmona: 9
Lee: 9
Byrd: 7 1/3 (lifted with one out in the eighth)
Sabathia (Wednesday): 9
Laffey (Thursday): 1
Total: 44 1/3
Those Baltimore pitchers were Dave McNally, Ross Grimsley, Mike Cuellar, and Jim Palmer. McNally gave up an 8th inning run in Kansas City but pitched a scoreless ninth on Sept. 1. The O’s won both ends of a Sept. 2 doubleheader vs. Boston behind complete game 1-0 shutouts by Grimsley and Cuellar. After an off day (or rainout), Palmer blanked the Sox on the fourth, which meant that Boston amassed 0 runs on just 8 hits in a three game sweep. The O’s then came to Cleveland on the 6th, where McNally and Cuellar shut out the Tribe on 8 combined hits in another doubleheader sweep (2-0 and 1-0), giving the Orioles five straight shutouts and six straight CGs. The streak ended when Cleveland got two ninth-inning runs off Grimsley the next day. Those were wins 4-10 of a ten game win streak for the Birds, the AL East champs that year.

I’ll leave it to Chuck to provide details of the 1948 streak, since he was probably at those games, spending time with his grandchildren between shifts at the mill. I do seem to recall that the Indians accomplished something else in 1948, though, which would also be good to repeat.

On the front page of ESPN right now is an article entitled in part, “Indians Starter Gives Up Run.” Got that? One of our starters gave up a run, and that’s a front page headline. Awesome.
Yeah; what drew my attention to the CBS article I quoted above was that their link read “Indians Fail to Shut Out A’s”. It seems we’re being measured against higher standards.
