PH? Let's try DH-ing him
However, the one pitcher the Indians would like to see at the plate probably won't get there. C.C. Sabathia, a career .297 hitter - 11-for-37, a home run, six runs batted in - worked on Wednesday and will not face the Reds.
Manager Eric Wedge said he could possibly use Sabathia as a pinch hitter for another pitcher "in a situation that would make sense."

i know the cc batting thing is fun and all, but i just assume our pitchers not risk getting hurt batting.

I think the big man is healthy enough to take a few hacks once in a while.

Because they’re always getting hurt in the NL batting. Or pseudo-batting, which is what they do (save for Micah Owings and Carlos Zambrano.)
Oh, how I pine for the days when men were men. And baseball players played baseball … All of it.

And small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri, am I right?

to both of you. just because it rarely happens doesn’t mean it never does. it would be pretty ‘not worth it’ if CC went down for some sideshow pinch hitting appearance. how many abdominal whatevers have our pitchers lost time to in the last few years. i think the big man is more than capable of tweaking something overswinging. it’s just flat out, not worth the risk – even if it’s a small risk. i don’t want our pithcers playing with hunting knives either.

I see what you’re saying, Brick, I just think it’s not that big of a deal. I mean sure, if CC were to bat and tweak something, you could give us all a good, hindsight-drive “I told ya’ so,” but in reality, these guys aren’t so frail that we can’t expect to keep them healthy when they’re only batting 10 times a year.

i don’t think it’s a big deal either or remotely likely to happen. but players get hurt all the time running the bases too. dellucci, victor (twice) and they do that all the time. it’s not just the act of swinging guys. he could get beaned in the head or the kneecap or eblow, or foul one off his toe. there are possibilities. and i just assume avoid them completely. players get hurt in baseball all the time – and plenty of them are while they’re on offense. if he’s not playing when he’s not pitching, he can’t get hurt (on the field).

Swinging a bat is not dangerous if he’s doing it right. It would take some freak incident for him to get hurt.

I’m expecting a Sabathia-for-Marte pinch-hithing move on Sunday.

Blake pulls a hammy and Wedge inserts CC to play third.
It’s almost funny but too true.

Ryan, that is flatly ridiculous! Come on. Marte has to be in the game to be pinch hit for.

When he pitches his game (or two) against the NL in June, CC will be batting. I don’t think 1 or 2 PH in Cincinnati this weekend is an unreasonable risk.
