Designated OF Jason Tyner for Assignment

Recalled LHP Jeremy Sowers

Tyner  was utterly superfluous, a speedy outfielder on a team that has much better speedy outfielders. So on the same day he ripped the team that gave him two years of extended playing time, he goes onto the waiver wire, impeccable timing on his part. If I were him, I'd consider myself very fortunate to get over 1300 major-league at-bats despite a career OPS+ of 70.

Fun fact: Jason Tyner was selected in the 1st Round (21st pick) of the1998 Draft by the New York Mets, one pick after CC Sabathia.

If there was any thought given to sending Laffey down prior to Thursday’s game, his performance against the A’s squelched it. Don’t believe everything you hear or read, even here.

Tyner

Following the Michaels DFA and Francisco promotion, I found the Tyner move surprising. Now that he has been DFA’d, I am more baffled.

Ah yes, but young Andy will have to develop the work ethic and grinding skills required to locate the key.

Nothing the least bit appropriate, anyway.

Now I’m imagining Blake & Wedge dancing on the giant piano together. If I was at home, I’d probably be Photoshopping this right now.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

So is the scene from the Fabulous Baker Boys where Pfieffer (Wedge) finally chooses Jeff Bridges (Blake) over Beau Bridges (Tyner)?

First, let’s see if any other team is willing to burn a 40 man roster spot to sign Tyner. He may boomerang back to Buffalo. (I’m unsure of the rules allowing this.)

That’s the most fun fact I’ve ever heard.

I vaguely remember the Tyner hype when he was in the Mets system. Someday, he was going to steal 200 bases … he was THAT FAST!

by emd2k3 on May 16, 2008 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Ahhh… the Steve Phillips years. Mets fans must be so disappointed that they’ve ended.

by steincat on May 16, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I give up on offense. I just give up. I’m going to start watching on the defensive half of the Indians’ innings.

Well, who here’s ready to see General Tsaowers keep the unearned runs streak alive?

by fleerdon on May 16, 2008 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

I said a similar thing to my friend this week, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

As a kid, I loved watching Joe Carter and Cory Snyder bat… it was fun when the Indians were at the plate. I couldn’t care less how Rich Yett was handling Kelly Gruber.

Recently, I’ll find myself watching the Indians starting staff do their thing, and flipping to ESPNewsHD while they’re up to bat.

You know Selig? Ombudsman.

Aside from the Marte/Blake thing, I kind of like that lineup

by APV on May 16, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

actually….I’m ok with Blake in there today with a RHP and Sowers not being particularly ground-ball prone

by APV on May 16, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Cueto: I’m setting the over/under on his strikeouts at 9.

by dgcambridge on May 16, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to take it, but….I have a weird feeling that we’re going to make him throw a lot of pitches and that he won’t be able to stick around long enough to get more than 9

Under.

by APV on May 16, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll take over. But I hope I’m wrong obviously.

-Erik

by drerikbrady on May 16, 2008 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I will take the under. I think Cueto is getting thrown into the fray too quickly and is going to keep crashing a bit here

by Roger Dorn on May 16, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

unrelated…but isn’t Cueto the name of the resistance leader in Total Recall?

see, I think Cueto is the type of pitcher we will kill – hard throwing, not especially good control

This lineup does look better without Hafner than with him.

by palcal on May 16, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It may not hit better, however. We shall see.

Also taken behind Tyner in that draft: Mark Prior (43rd), Adam Dunn (50th), Barry Zito (83rd), Matt Holiday (210th), and Mark Texiera (265th).

by maledicta on May 16, 2008 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

Was Teixeira a signability issue?

by dgcambridge on May 16, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Prior was the #2 overall pick when he signed with the Cubs, so this must have been a prior year. The #1 pick that year was Joe Mauer; these days, they talk about how good a prospect Mauer was and the hometown All-American boy and all that, but I remember that draft and he was taken because the Twins knew they couldn’t sign Prior.

by Fiddlesticks on May 16, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Just to clear up the 98 draft from above:

Mark Prior (43rd – yankees, did not sign), Adam Dunn (50th-Reds, signed), Barry Zito (83rd-Rangers, did not sign), Matt Holiday (210th-Rockies, signed), and Mark Texiera (265th-Red Sox, did not sign).
