First rec of the night.
Exam=over. Time for a big night on LGT without having to simultaneously read about crazies.

Also!
ILC is in the Bison lineup again tonight, though at DH. He only played in one of the games of the DH yesterday. Looks like they are taking it slow with his elbow.
Yeah feels like I haven’t been in an entire game thread for years.

All we need is for JoeBo’s arm to fall off and this could be the beginning of something legendary.

Every time we face the Reds in Cincinnati, I for some reason flashback to Cliff Lee hanging fastballs and getting clobbered a few years back.
And I now take solace that Cliff is now awesome.
how about gutz’ catch last year running into the chain-link fence or whatever they have out there in right field

Soup sounds like a good idea. On the other hand, going to the grocery store seems difficult.

Looch gets one day off, and it feels like we haven’t seen him in ages. I think this means I like him.

Geez, Brandon Phillips should team up with Joba to teach masterclasses on over-celebrating minor achievements.
What’d he do? I’ve got a radio on. Before I hear, I will say it’s pretty cool to hit a 2-run HR in the first inning against your IL rival.
Which pretty much illustrates why he’s no longer with us.
by supermarioelia on May 16, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions
We could use a little swagger like that, in my opinion. I know Wedge would prefer Casey Blake style, but I’ll take some attitude
And strolled the bases and clapped his hands repeatedly…it sounds silly to type it all, but visually it looked like he was celebrating having won a World Series game.

Pure baseball is a game in which all batters are capable of performing their function at the plate. When pitchers stopped taking legit batting practice and really trying to be passable hitters, the purity was destroyed. It’s a 7 man lineup. Pitch around the 8th guy to get to the pitcher, who falls over and dies with bat on shoulder.
the thing I really hate is that a guy could be pitching a 1-0 masterpiece after his half of the 7th, if he’s due to bat in the next inning, the manager almost has to pull him.
Give Marte a Chance.
When you’re paying him $10M to pitch, I understand not wanting him to get hurt at the plate. Which is why I support the DH. It’s the most sensible solution to not having to watch a 7 man lineup. Watching a pitcher hit makes me feel as cheap as watching the 2 minute foul extravaganza at the end of a basketball game or taking a knee in a football game (neither of which has to do with a failure to perform, but instead is just an unfortunate product of having a clock). It’s just not the way the game is supposed to be played.
So when are we gonna play a little chin music for Mr. Phillips?
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
This Cueto kid has too much swagger. Can we just spend the rest of the game throwing at guys’ heads.
Haha have we ever talked about Hafner? I’m confused.

Sowers clearly didn’t read the “No smoking, No blow up dolls, No giving up runs” poster in the pitchers’ locker room.
Somebody take Breslow’s DS away, he needs to be paying attention tonight.

They are pretty bad after only two innings. But you should hear the Diamondbacks announcers, one of which is Mark Grace. No sense of professionalism for being on TV, total ass-kissers to the players rather than being objective, and just plain annoying. And you wonder why the casual fan’s perspective, even of his/her own team, is so skewed.
It’s the NL Mario – you need to be reading up on NL strategy instead of psychiatry – it’s more useful.

I didn’t say it wasn’t interesting, I said it wasn’t useful. Here’s all you need to know. Give ‘em 30 miliamps between the temples, pickle their brains with thorazine until they get tortacollis or an arrythmia and then back off the dosage. Simple, no?
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
Thorazine? Second generation APs weren’t around when you practiced?

I have a tale of the tape for the Reds announcers: THE INDIANS ARE BETTER THAN THE REDS, STOP GRASPING AT STRAWS
Yeah that was pretty bad. They talked about it for a solid ten minutes. I keep reminding myself how giddy they were about Homer Bailey.

Honestly, he doesn’t and shouldn’t give a shit. It’s a non-issue and should be. If Brandon Phillips was still in a Cleveland uniform, there’s a chance he wouldn’t be in a major league uniform. (WHAT?!) My point is that there’s no guarantee that Phillips would have done this had he been retained.
But his treatment of Andy Marte suggests he hasn’t learned his lesson, and that he truly has not again thought of the lesson learned from the Phillips situation.
it’s only the reds who treat this like their world series every year. we should (and do) be more concerned with a series agianst the royals or A’s.
I’m equally concerned with all games. When a team wins 94 games and makes it to the playoffs, and the runner-up stays home because they only won 92 games, there is no re-count to determine against whom the wins were secured. A win is a win. April 1st or September 31st. Based on that, I do value Wedge’s “We are concerned with the urgency of each game, but we won’t lose sight of the whole season” statements.
Well I’m off to root for the Celts – this doesn’t look too good.

I think if you’re going to do it, keep it to six games, and not have those games count in the league standings.
nah, then why play them at all? imagine if fausto got hurt pitching in a game that doesn’t even count … hell no. fire interleague play, it has run its course.

I was reading Lastoria’s blog, and he was suggesting through his sources that perhaps Michael Aubrey will get called up tonight to take Sowers’ spot. It’ll give the Indians another bat on the bench while dabbling in the NL, and give the Indians a left-handed bat to play in place of Garko.
Sure enough, Aubrey is not in the Bisons’ lineup tonight.
you know what is totally crazy and probably completely unjustified, but I am way more excited about Aubrey then Ben Nouning Francisco

What is the Indians record against rookie pitchers this year? Does anybody have that at their fingertips?
It is too depressing to look up
It’s deeper than just rookies though. It’s a complex mix of rookies, 2nd year guys, soft tossers, fireballers, veterans, whites, blacks and Latinos.

i’ve asked this before – doesn’t this imply our hitters, whether rookies or vets, require constant spoon-feeding from ONE guy to retain their skills?
I’ve never bought the argument that there’s no benefit in canning a pitching or hitting coach because of their insignificance. It kind of devalues any contribution they offer.

I would have no problem with them firing him.
by supermarioelia on May 16, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh. Well, I would, if it were for this reason. But they did it with Murray, so I could see it happening here.
Murray just had problems with social skills in general, in addition to the club’s offensive struggles. I’m pretty sure I’ve told my Eddie Murray Winter Haven story before.
by supermarioelia on May 16, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Murray was fired because he had lost the confidence-and the ears-of the hitters, and thus could not be effective. I don’t know if that’s true of Shelton

With Garko batting, they could put the pitcher in that spot, put Hafner at 1st for an inning or two, then move Blake to 1st as a late inning defensive replacement.

Never underestimate 95 mph. Plus that slider tonight—yikes. Phillips looked like he thought it would hit him, and it dropped back in for a strike.
