Also!

ILC is in the Bison lineup again tonight, though at DH. He only played in one of the games of the DH yesterday. Looks like they are taking it slow with his elbow.

relative to BLC, does ILC have a paprika flavoring?

I know when I was in Sweden I purchased so gum that was flavored “Salty Licorice”.

Not good.

I have to miss tonight’s game – any idea how long after the end of the game that it gets archived by mlb.TV?

Yay for first game thread in forever!

Wedge – no designated closer

any of 4 pitchers could pitch 7th, 8th, and 9th

Hey, Closer by Committee! Cool!

All we need is for JoeBo’s arm to fall off and this could be the beginning of something legendary.

Ryan, does this mean you are full on partaking in the game thread tonight?

by Roger Dorn on May 16, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Wedge – possible that JoBo and Westbrook could be back next week (that is the optimistic version)

by palcal on May 16, 2008 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

Every time we face the Reds in Cincinnati, I for some reason flashback to Cliff Lee hanging fastballs and getting clobbered a few years back.

And I now take solace that Cliff is now awesome.

by Fiddlesticks on May 16, 2008 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

What’d he do? I’ve got a radio on. Before I hear, I will say it’s pretty cool to hit a 2-run HR in the first inning against your IL rival.

Flipped his bat and looked at the dugout

Which pretty much illustrates why he’s no longer with us.

by supermarioelia on May 16, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

We could use a little swagger like that, in my opinion. I know Wedge would prefer Casey Blake style, but I’ll take some attitude

by Roger Dorn on May 16, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That is not attitude, that is douchebaggery.

Tribe fan from far, far away

by LGT Patrick on May 16, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The bigger douchebaggery was the umpiring gifting those “non-strike” calls to Griffey just because he’s “Griffey” and Sowers is on the mound. Then, Votto steps up, and the same pitch that was twice a ball is called a strike.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I hate that in any situation.

by Voltaire on May 16, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

And strolled the bases and clapped his hands repeatedly…it sounds silly to type it all, but visually it looked like he was celebrating having won a World Series game.

by Fiddlesticks on May 16, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

It was pretty over-the-top. He turned, flipped the bat, clapped his hands running the bases, the whole nine yards.

by Ryan on May 16, 2008 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Since you are a lot classier than I, do you think it’s time to retaliate with this chump?

by Roger Dorn on May 16, 2008 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I do. In retaliation, the Indians pitchers should get him out.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s always had a little flair. I’m not sure skipping and throwing your bat 20 feet is necessary, but that’s his call.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That HR still doesn’t make him worth keeping.

I can’t wait to see Sowers hit. I love pure baseball.

by Voltaire on May 16, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

Pure baseball is a game in which all batters are capable of performing their function at the plate. When pitchers stopped taking legit batting practice and really trying to be passable hitters, the purity was destroyed. It’s a 7 man lineup. Pitch around the 8th guy to get to the pitcher, who falls over and dies with bat on shoulder.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Many do, as is their right. I was just making the point that I don’t like it.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

the thing I really hate is that a guy could be pitching a 1-0 masterpiece after his half of the 7th, if he’s due to bat in the next inning, the manager almost has to pull him.

Give Marte a Chance.

by westbrook on May 16, 2008 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

When you’re paying him $10M to pitch, I understand not wanting him to get hurt at the plate. Which is why I support the DH. It’s the most sensible solution to not having to watch a 7 man lineup. Watching a pitcher hit makes me feel as cheap as watching the 2 minute foul extravaganza at the end of a basketball game or taking a knee in a football game (neither of which has to do with a failure to perform, but instead is just an unfortunate product of having a clock). It’s just not the way the game is supposed to be played.

These announcers are Harrelson-esque

by Roger Dorn on May 16, 2008 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

They are pretty bad after only two innings. But you should hear the Diamondbacks announcers, one of which is Mark Grace. No sense of professionalism for being on TV, total ass-kissers to the players rather than being objective, and just plain annoying. And you wonder why the casual fan’s perspective, even of his/her own team, is so skewed.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I have actually watched a couple D-Bags games this year because I wanted to see some of this young talent. Grace and the other guy had their kids in the booth interviewing them instead of calling a 1 run game in the 7th inning.

by RD74 on May 16, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly, he doesn’t and shouldn’t give a shit. It’s a non-issue and should be. If Brandon Phillips was still in a Cleveland uniform, there’s a chance he wouldn’t be in a major league uniform. (WHAT?!) My point is that there’s no guarantee that Phillips would have done this had he been retained.

But his treatment of Andy Marte suggests he hasn’t learned his lesson, and that he truly has not again thought of the lesson learned from the Phillips situation.

it’s only the reds who treat this like their world series every year. we should (and do) be more concerned with a series agianst the royals or A’s.

by Brick. on May 16, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m equally concerned with all games. When a team wins 94 games and makes it to the playoffs, and the runner-up stays home because they only won 92 games, there is no re-count to determine against whom the wins were secured. A win is a win. April 1st or September 31st. Based on that, I do value Wedge’s “We are concerned with the urgency of each game, but we won’t lose sight of the whole season” statements.

by xrickx on May 16, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure enough, Aubrey is not in the Bisons’ lineup tonight.

With Garko batting, they could put the pitcher in that spot, put Hafner at 1st for an inning or two, then move Blake to 1st as a late inning defensive replacement.
