Cleveland at Cincinnati, 1:15 PM (WKYC)

Did I miss the memo where Pronk was deemed unable to play in the field? I know it was just one homer, but it’s kinda weird we haven’t seen him since.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

You missed a lot of memos. Don’t throw at Phillips, Anyone but Marte, Hafner can’t play the field, Closer by committee until Joebo saves us, etc

Lets hope Clifford can get us out of town with a win. I feel like I am in bizzaro world, with the Reds having good, young starting pitching and position players. It was a lot easier to live with Reds fans when their team didn’t have much of a future.

by bewwolv on May 18, 2008 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

They won’t have a future once Jocketty gets going.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I am incredibly sick of our lineup. I don’t expect more than a few runs.

by mjschaefer on May 18, 2008 12:34 PM EDT reply actions

I’d settle for a few runs. This lineup against Volquez, I expect a shutout.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I’m resigned to a loss today.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

You know things are going bad when we are resigned to a loss when a guy with a 0.67 ERA is going

by Roger Dorn on May 18, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

We’re going to lose 0.67-0

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The guy with the 0.67 ERA is the one who sagely pointed out that it’s hard to win when you don’t score.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

This lineup makes me wanna puke. It might be bad enough that another terrible offensive performance today won’t even spur any moves tomorrow on the offday.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:34 PM EDT reply actions

Jamie Carroll has gotten on base twice in his last 19 plate appearances. So let’s bat him second!

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, and he’s struck out in 7 of those 19. That’s the guy you want following Grady.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

you can sure bet if he has an 0/4, we’ll really be shouting FE WEE

That looks like fun; I’m not waiting for the 0-4.

FE WEE!

You seem to be spot on to me…

by mjschaefer on May 18, 2008 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Why the hell is Garko not in there? He’s really been heating it up. Wedge must be “saving him” to pinch hit because in his world, 1 AB is more productive than 4.

Give Marte a Chance.

by westbrook on May 18, 2008 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Gark’s right-left splits for the year are pretty atrocious in a SSS, but I think the bigger issue is that his atbats are still atrocious despite some better results in the past few games. He hasn’t had a game off since the Yankees series, so I really don’t mind the day off today.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

With Aubrey on the roster, Hafner is now #5 on the depth chart at his defensive position. Good thing he hits so well, or else his roster spot might be in jeopardy.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

in related news, Aubrey is our #3 3B behind Blake and … Carroll.

Give Marte a Chance.

by westbrook on May 18, 2008 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright so who would’ve thunk in April that on May 18th our lineup would have Francisco and Aubrey in the 5 and 6 holes against the #2 starter ERA-wise in baseball. Oh, and Carroll would be batting second. And that Andy Marte would still be sitting. Welcome to the bizarro world.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, he’s got a glove! How cute. I guess he’s hoping to get a chance to catch a foul ball, and then maybe Blake will autograph it for him.

good point. he’d get more action in the first row behind the dugout.

Canada-Russia in the final of the world hockey championships. Wee!

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Is that like the World Cup?

by Roger Dorn on May 18, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Naw it’s yearly. And involves only players that have already been knocked out of the NHL playoffs (which by this point is nearly everyone) and players that agree to play. Nevertheless, it’s still damn exciting. Russia has Ovechkin and Kovalchuk on the roster, while Canada has Heatley and Nash. The Olympics are way bigger than this though.

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

So the Russians have Ovechkin and the Canadians are without Crosby?

Aside from a few college hockey factoids, that about covers my knowledge of hockey.

Where is all this talk of the Reds as a team with more of a future coming from? We have 2 young pitchers (Carmona and Laffey) who have been absolutely dominant this year, and two middle-aged pitchers (Westbrook and Lee) who will be good for a while, and some pitchers with potential (Atom Miller and Sowers). Isn’t this better than anything the Reds have? Also, aren’t their best hitters other than Brandon Phillips really old?

Disappointed by the Indians since 1995.

No, but we did have two guys who stole 2B with two outs, deep into the current AB. So it was like, scoring position for 1-2 pitches, and of course there are times when the batter will take a pitch to help the runner get over.

At some point in time, these guys are going to be done shitting their pants with runners on base. Fearing failure is one thing, but this level of failure isn’t sustainable. The offense will come alive.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s be clear: Unless Francisco hits a HR, we won’t score today. Combination of facing Volquez, our general offensive ineptitude, and the fact that we’ve scored more than 2 runs only once on a Sunday all year – all of this bodes very badly.

by maledicta on May 18, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

A friend of mine just asserted that my love for Marte coloured my criticism of Blake on that 2-0 take. Can someone reassure me that I was being objective?

by supermarioelia on May 18, 2008 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

On one hand, you don’t want the pitcher leading off the next inning, so Blake wants to get him to the plate in the 2nd. Yet on the other bigger hand, you need to score runs to win. And the pitcher is not good at driving in runs. With a man on base and fastball on a tee, you gotta pull the trigger.

by xrickx on May 18, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Does your friend understand baseball?

by mjschaefer on May 18, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

WIth the pitcher on deck, I think swing at a good pitch is the appropriate approach

by Roger Dorn on May 18, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

you were being objective. in that situation the hitter has to know he is getting pitched around. he has to be looking for that one pitch to hammer. blake took it, as he so often does. a walk there does absolutely nothing for the team except prevent the pitcher from leading off the next inning

by mpstable on May 18, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

i much prefer watching major league pitchers attempt to retire major league hitters. all the talk of strategy and tradition is bunk. hating the DH and wanting pitchers to keep hitting is a textbook case of wanting to keep something old just bc it is old.
it would be like arguing that we need to go back to peach baskets instead of hoops with nets in basketball, bc “that’s the way the game was meant to be played”

I think that Barry Bonds should be a very real consideration for the front office right now.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

You realize that between him and Hafner we’d be paying upwards of $20 million for our DH this year, right?

by maledicta on May 18, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless you are Barry Bonds or his agent then you can’t comment definitively on what it would cost.

We can say it would likely cost x amount but we don’t know unless we kick the tires.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Kicking the tires is setting a very low bar, so yeah, there’s no offensive reason why it shouldn’t be done. But realistically, it’ll cost a lot, and you heap that onto what we’re paying Hafner already for almost no production (which basically constitutes raising the white flag on that entire signing), and you end up with an unreasonably large proportion of this team’s payroll going to the DH spot. Not worth it.

I mean, if we kick the tires and Bonds comes back and says, “I’ll play for league minimum,” then yeah. But it’s not happening.

Bonds could be shifted around. He could play below average ledt field but it wouldn’t kill us.

Grady and Gutz cover above average ground in the outfield.

DH, LF, maybe even some first base if he would consider it.

We could get 70-80 games out of him.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

But now we’re just paying for a utility guy, and one who only plays half the time anyway. “Diminishing returns” doesn’t even begin to cover it. And I want to see Francisco in LF, not Bonds. He’s one of the few guys on this offense that doesn’t deserve to get replaced. I get what you’re driving at, but Bonds just doesn’t fit our needs. He can’t play any of the positions we need to fill, and he almost certainly won’t fit in our price range.

by maledicta on May 18, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Who’s to say that his price isn’t falling by the day?

With all due respect to Francisco he is not going to put up the numbers that Bonds has in the past. The only thing we have to balance is whether Bonds will put up solid numbers and whether he will be a distraction.

If both of those question marks are favorable then we should make an attempt at signing him.

And that utility guy comment is useless. We will be paying for offense, not a defensive mainstay.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: price falling. I dunno. Barry Bonds, I guess. He has no incentive to come back and play, and certainly not for us, so why would he lower his asking price at all? He’s got bigger things to worry about. He’s not desperate for playing time or money. We, on the other hand, are very desperate, which means he’d have all the leverage.

You seriously would rather have 44-yo, declining, hasn’t played all year, no defense, no baserunning, planet Earth’s resident asshole Barry Bonds over 26-yo Ben Francisco? Really? It isn’t a question of whether or not Francisco would be better than some past version of Bonds (clearly he wouldn’t), it’s a question of who would be better today. I’ll take the guy with upside over the guy with none, who’s only going to play 50% of the time anyway. Of all the moves we can make, this one is trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

by maledicta on May 18, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so.

Barry Bond’s OBP numbers were flat out ridiculous last year. His baserunning abilities isn’t really important to me, and as long as he hits he can be an asshole to the media all he wants.

We are not going to sign him to a long term contract so I think that the upside thing is pretty unimportant. Franciso does deserve a shot, but if Bonds can put up the numbers he did last year then we would be costing ourselves many runs by not signing him.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s just everything the front office has NOT targeted in the players it pursues. Signing Bonds counters the whole talk of “character” people the Indians want in uniform. And honestly, that may be enough reason to dissuade Shapiro.

by xrickx on May 18, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I know that. I even commented on why we won’t sign him in a fanpost a little while ago.

But if this struggle continues and if teams still won’t contact Bonds then we should at least kick the tires on cost.

No, but it created a hole at second. Belliard sucked and was in his walk year.

by SuddenSam on May 18, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel the need to answer this every time it comes up.

It is brutally unfair to everybody involved — Phillips and Wedge in particular — to lump Phillips in with Bradley. Bradley had or has serious anger management problems that led him to be openly insubordinate, to dust-ups with fans and umpires and coaches, and on more than one occasion, to criminal charges.

Phillips is just a little more smug and a little less coachable than you’d like, but that is a far cry from Bradley.

by Jay on May 18, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Just look at the continued trouble of Bradley and compare it to Phillip’s career.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Right. But even just from the moment they left the Indians, it’s not remotely the same thing.

by Jay on May 18, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I only connect Phillips and Bradley in that I think they’re both tools. From different drawers, perhaps, and yes Bradley has legitimate medical issues, so they’re not the same. But I don’t like them, and I’m glad they’re not on the team I root for.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, hey, why not add the Unabomber to the list!

I don’t like Wedge, or Phillips, or Bradley, or the Unabomber!

by maledicta on May 18, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t understand your objection. If the Unabomber played for Cleveland, yes, I’d wish him gone. Hitler, too, before you ask. One of the reasons I am an Indians fan is because, under Shapiro, they trot out a team that I feel good about rooting for.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Really?

I rooted for Albert Belle. I rooted for moody Manny.

As long as they’re in an Indians uniform I will root for them.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I just think it’s unfair to Phillips — who is merely a douchebag — to be lumped in with Bradley — who is borderline violently criminal.

I too am glad we don’t have to suffer rooting for total cretins like Belle and Bradley. And I too am glad we don’t have too many players who are douchebags, like Phillips or for that matter Manny (the old one).

But the one is in a whole different category from the other, and I can promise you that the front office is working a lot harder to avoid the former than the latter. Some of our guys on other teams would seem like douchebags, and vice versa, but a criminal is a criminal. Have some perspective.

by Jay on May 18, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Phillips may come off as a douche, but we don’t personally know him.

He was still fairly young when he was with us. I won’t judge him for some attitude problems when he’s still a kid.

by gahnki on May 18, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, yeah, that is pretty close to the point that I’m trying to make.

by Jay on May 18, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It is? Then I’m confused (again). I thought your point was that Phillips’ problems are trivial compared to Bradley’s.

I dislike Phillips because of the way he plays the game, right now. (I think that’s been pretty clear in my game thread posts this weekend.) I dislike Bradley because of the way he comported himself, although I understand that he has legitimate medical issues. I don’t know each of them personally. Maybe that makes me shallow, but that’s how I feel.

by Fiddlesticks on May 18, 2008 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You have my point right. I guess there is case to be made that Bradley’s behavior can be excused due to his having a significant psychiatric problem, while Phillips has no real excuse and is just a jackoff. That ventures a little further into moral relativism than I care to go, but to each his own, I guess.

Where I agree with gahnki is that Phillips’ problems are based on our distant observation of his physical behavior, and it may or may not actually mean anything with respect to his character. I mean, it’s bush, but he may not actually be a bad guy — it might just be a maturity thing, but whatever it is, it’s not the same thing as bad character. Hell, I’d say the same thing for Justin.

by Jay on May 18, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bradley — who is borderline violently criminal

Isn’t that being harsh? Unfair? Milton is certainly wrapped too tight, and has issues, But unless I’m forgetting something I wouldn’t call him violently criminal. His run-in with the cops was over some late-night driving-while-black stuff in Medina. Or did he rob a bank? I think Milton gets a bad rap because he’s such an unlikable fellow. I felt bad for the way he tore up his knee late last season.

He’s a drag to have on your team, a constant pain in the ass. He’s like Johnny Evers (of Tinkers to Evers to Chance fame), also known as the Crab or the Human Crab for his charm and style. But is he violently criminal?
