casey could take a shit on the 3rd base bag and never even try to field a ball and he will keep playing

Well, we’ve achieved our objective. Volquez at 110+ pitches. That means we win, right? Oh. My mistake.
i’m the most negative person in the world

If you’d have told me before the season that by mid-May Michael Aubrey would have more HRs than a healthy Victor Martinez, I’d have punched myself in the face
I can appreciate somebody who doesn’t try and pull everything. That’s just good hitting by Votto.
And Cliff Lee again threw a fastball judge above the belt over the middle of the plate.
this is, bar none, the most depressing weekend of my 23 years

On the bright side, Josh Beckett has given up 4 home runs today!
That’s gotta make you happy

That was an exciting series
You couldn’t have known that you were catching the Reds juggernaut just as it was beginning to roll.
Yeah, they might have a chance in the Mickey Mouse League.

Between this nonsense and that Tim guy, SB Nation has officially become cleveland.com. Wonderful.

i just read this http://www.redreporter.com/2008/5/18/520152/game-44-part-iii
it looks like Red Reporter really is cleveland.com
click that link at your own risk, bc it is kinda obnoxious.
Actually, that’s why you guys should be upset.
Those were good games for you. But not for us.
That’s why we are upset now. Your team is not good nor have they been good for a long time. We should have destroyed you. And yet, even when our hitters suck, we still had a chance to win all three games.
It is almost a positive to see us struggle so mightily and still almost win. Or it could be a tremendous negative for Reds fans.
I don’t think the teams are that unevenly matched. The starting pitching we threw at you was just as good as/better than yours, say.
To me, it’s encouraging…to a point. With the obvious roster construction adjustments this team needs, we could be very competitive with the top teams. As it is, our pitching isn’t bad, and the offense still manages to score enough to give us a good shot.
i'd say the indians have seen enough of adam dunn
he hit about 1400 feet of home runs off of them
In the end, life and business are about human connections. And computers are about trying to murder you in a lake. And to me the choice is easy.

It was only three games!
I mean, you really don’t want to get in a pissing match with us. It won’t even be competitive.
ok?
which indian hit the ball further than adam dunn during the series?

Jeremy Sowers is the 6th/7th starter on this team.
What is Cueto in yours?
Fausto is our number two. Harang is your number one.
And Lee is our number five. What is Volquez in yours?
That should give a general idea of the difference between he two organizations pitching depth.
Your team is surely on the way up though I’d argue that it had no where else to go. And just when i think you are doing things right you go and fire Krivsky for Jocketty.
I’ll admit that I don’t know the story behind Sowers. I’d actually love to hear what led to him pitching. I know he was called up for the game, but yeah.
But let me get this straight. Your rotation, in order, would be Sabathia/Fausto/Byrd/Laffey/Lee?
Sabathia: 5.47 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 54.1 IP
Carmona: 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 56.0 IP
Byrd: 3.61 ERA, 1.12 WHIP in 47.1 IP
Laffey: 1.35 ERA, 0.86 in 26.2 IP
Lee: 0.67, 0.67 in 53.2 IP before today
vs.:
Harang: 3.12/1.14/69.1
Arroyo: 6.08/1.63/47.1
Cueto: 5.75/1.20/51.2
Volquez: 1.12/1.26/48.1 before today
And we’d rather forget about number 5, which has been partially Belisle, with his 7.45/1.91 in 19.1 IP, and partially Fogg…who was approximately as bad.
That said, Cueto’s numbers look a lot like Sabathia’s, Harang looks like Byrd in 20 more innings (which is something in and of itself), Arroyo looks like Carmona (or better) on a good day and Belisle on a bad day, Volquez can go head to head with Lee…
and our number 5 sucks, while Laffey has been impressive through 26 IP. So just glancing over things, if we continue to see as much bad Arroyo as we have, and Fausto continues playing way beyond his WHIP, you have a better #2 and a much better #5.
More realistically (or perhaps optimistically), I would think Carmona’s ERA would pick up a bit, and Arroyo’s would decline somewhat, so those two would be more of a wash. I like to think we’d call up Bailey, but if Laffey keeps up his small-sample-size numbers, he’d still be better. The one plus for the Reds is that Harang is an undead innings-eater.
But can Laffey keep performing like that? Can Lee or Volquez? Hellifiknow. That’s why I anticipate some more good matchups in late June.
Calling Bronson Arroyo and Fausto Carmona a wash is a crime against baseball.
by gahnki on May 18, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Mainly I don’t see how he maintains that sort of ERA with the peripherals he’s been putting up this year.
One difference between the two is that Carmona’s allowed 1 HR, while Arroyo has allowed 8. He tends to scatter hits-mainly singles-but does seem to give up a lot of walks this season. By contrast, Arroyo has been giving up more extra-base hits and fewer walks—but a lot more runs.
However, Arroyo really has been a Jekyll/Hyde pitcher this year. It seems a little optimistic to hope that his season will mirror his last two starts, but they look a lot like Carmona’s last two starts.
Given that, as I said, I still anticipate Carmona coming down a bit, and I’d like to think Arroyo would come on somewhat—but there is still a gap between those two.
Last year:
R ER HR H BB K ERA
Fausto- 78 73 16 199 63 137 3.06
Arroyo- 109 99 28 232 61 151 4.23
So Arroyo gave up a large number more runs, earned runs, homers, and hits with a significantly higher ERA.
The walk numbers are a wash while Arroyo had more K’s.
Based off of last year’s number and age it seems pretty clear to me which one is more valuable now and in the future.
It started off as Sabathia/Carmona/Westbrook/Byrd/Lee
Westbrook is now injured. Laffey has Westbrook’s spot until he recovers.
Sowers just had a spot start because of an odd rotational setup caused (I believe) by the number of rain outs and subsequent double headers we’ve had.
Our rotation, in order, would be Sabathia- Carmona- Westbrook- Byrd- Lee- Laffey- Sowers. Sowers was only recalled because of a rainout on Sunday that forced a double-header on Monday. The team didn’t want to throw a pitcher on short rest, so Sowers was recalled to take the spot start. He’s our #2 or 3… in Buffalo.

Hello chandrathan,
Are we still playing the Reds? I’m just a bit confused as to why you’re still lurking here. No offense. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the Reds since I do consider myself something of a conasseuer of minor league-quality baseball, but I think your time has come and gone. No offense. I come to LGT for a few reason. First, for inside jokes. Second, to talk Tribe. Third, to avoid fans of other teams. I think you’re 0 for 3. Thanks for your time here. No offense.
Just my 2 cents – no offense :)

And that’s how you do an Indiansfan style beatdown.
I have no problem with fans of other teams hangning around. Gray has been fine around here.
But chandrathan has been downright childish and annoying. It’s time for him to leave.
Good points all (you and Mario both).
It’s okay for fans of other teams to visit, engage in some discussion and even some banter. But if there’s no real banter, just little tit-for-tat my-team-is-better stuff, then that’s really just trolling. Gray and a couple other have put in some real discussion.
got people too hyped up about mediocre minor league numbers and forget the real travesty of this ballclub: that manny marte has no playing time and casey blake does
by Gradyforpresident on May 19, 2008 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
i just feel like he’s taking valuable attention and wrangling-over from our boy. ever since marte had a game in spring training in 2006 in which he hit 2 home runs and a double i was sure – SURE I SAY – that he was our next big thing.
and that’s why i don’t like ben francisco. because he’s a distraction. ben fran is like the homeless serial killer and manny marte is marlo stanfield.

Let’s see how Francisco does. He’s outhitting both Dellucci and Gutierrez by a mile over the past 10 days. He’s probably a mirage, like Jody Gerut. But he’s not the problem. Don’t hate him. Play Marte.
i’m not saying it’s rational; but i don’t think he should steal time from Gutz
