FREE MANNY MARTE FOR FUCK’S SAKE. there.
by Gradyforpresident on May 22, 2008 8:02 PM EDT reply actions
So just to highlight the lunacy of looking at Marte’s numbers to date, and the lunacy of SSS:
Marte 2008: 3-26, no extrabase hits, 2BB, 6K
Casey vs. LHP 2008: 4-24, no extrabase hits, 3BB, 5K
Yeah it’s really clear why Blake is the unquestionable choice tonight against Beurhle.
Marte’s 2008 against LHP: 1-3, 2BB, AND A 933 OPS! WOOOO!
Oh Mandy…..
One of you guys who knows how to find and examine BIP #s better than me can check this:
Is it me or has Grady been extremely ‘unlucky’ on balls in play?
Give Marte a Chance. FIRE SHELTON. Find Wedge a Hot Seat.
Depends on how you look at it.
Overall, he has .288 BABIP for the season, which is pretty normal.
March/April – he was very lucky, with .329 BABIP. In May it has been .217. So recently, he has been unlucky. Good call.
also, his career babip is .331. so his current .290 is really unlucky
by Gradyforpresident on May 22, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
From here, his BABIP is .290 this year, which isn’t unusually low.. but his career BABIP is ~.337 or so, so he usually turns balls in play into hits in higher numbers than he has this year.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

seriously, wedge needs to go. he’s proving daily that he’s not fit to manage
by Gradyforpresident on May 22, 2008 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions
at this point, doesn’t it go past wedge? i mean, how badly can one group of seemingly-capable players suck for an extended period of time? it’s embarassing, and i tend to think it’s more on the on-field stuff than the manager now.
by DontCallMeJoey on May 22, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, but this is just unacceptable, and someone should get shit canned. and it’s not like he’s doing his job well (with all the caveats that the manager honestly doesn’t do that much, but if that’s the case shouldn’t he do those things right?)
by Gradyforpresident on May 22, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
and i know jay thinks less of me now
by Gradyforpresident on May 22, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
i hear you…by no means am i defending wedge’s job so far. just seems to me that it’s sort of self-defeating to drop him right now. who’s the manager if he’s out, willis? i know it’s canned, but it looks like shelton is going to have to be the fall guy unless the hitters go on a 2-week .750 BA streak here soon. i think b/w the offense sucking and the pitching going nuts, wedge may grade out at a C+/B-, or pretty average for now.
by DontCallMeJoey on May 22, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
We shouldn’t fire Wedge, but you won’t find many people with an ill word to say about Carl Willis right now.
i’ve got nothing bad to say about Old Carl, believe me. but i don’t see him as the manager of the Indians, do you?

I will.
We have come to this hallowed spot to remind Cleveland of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of the 2008 pennant race. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of crappy hitting to the sunlit path of the mighty bats of old. Now is the time to lift our Tribe from the quicksands of starting Casey Blake at third to the solid rock of Andy Marte. Now is the time to make hitting a reality for all of the fine men who wear that Indian’s jersey.
It would be fatal for us as a group of loyal fans to overlook the urgency of the moment. This lukewarm start to what should be our year to win the World Series is unacceptable and our discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of our rightful pennant. 2007 was not the end, but the beginning. And those who hope that the Tribe needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the rest of the league believes this to be business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in the American League until the Tribe is granted his that elusive World Series. The mountains of change will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice shines on Cleveland.
But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for Andy Marte by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into harsh words for rightful roles players such as Casey Blake. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting negativity with positivity for what is to come.
The marvelous new upswell of pride which has engulfed all fellow Featherheads must not lead us to a distrust of all those who do not count themselves as Tribe fans, for many of our baseball brethren, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.
We cannot turn back.
There are those who are asking us, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Tribe is the victim of dead bats. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of a 7 game losing streak, cannot gain rest. We cannot be satisfied as long as the the pennant remains out of our reach. We can never be satisfied as long as our children and our fathers have never shared a World title. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until the mighty Pronk awakens from his slumber.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow bars and college dormitories. And some of you have come from areas where your quest—quest for Tribe greatness left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of Red Sox nation and those pricks in NY. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Cleveland, go back to Philadelphia (that’s you Jay), go back to Baltimore and DC, go back to Chicago, go back to Maui, go back to the small towns all over Ohio, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day the Tribe hitters will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that our bats are not created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the corner of Carnegie and Ontario, the sons of former Tribe fans and current Tribe fans will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood and drink from the cup of victory.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Ohio, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of baseball justice.
I have a dream that my two sons will one day live in a nation where they will not be negatively judged by the Chief Wahoo on their caps but World Champions t-shirt on their backs.
I have a dream today.

Did you guys hear about this thing? I just found out about it today.
The Sox announced last week that they terminated the employment of three members of the team’s Latin American scouting staff: Wilder, full-time scout Victor Mateo and part-time scout Domingo Toribio. The firings resulted from the findings of a two-month probe by Major League Baseball’s Department of Investigations. An MLB investigator confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that the probe involved skimming of finances, but because it is now a federal investigation, everyone involved is being tight-lipped.

I checked on DVR – no problem with cutoff man – Looch just had such a weak throw that cutoff man grabbed it.
Gotcha – I guess I didn’t see it as his fault because I was fully expecting it to be a play at the plate.
No, under the best of circumstances there probably is no play at the plate, because their pinch-runner was fast as hell.
That should have worked in our favor — the obvious lack of play at the plate should have improved the focus on not letting the batter get into scoring position. But that only works if Blake doesn’t muff the catch.
How fucking deep was Looch playing there? Jesus Christ.

The dagger in heart of this game will be the fact that we have to watch our “heart of the order” fail and flail in the last frame.
Any chance BenFran nails either of those runners at the plate? Or at least maybe they don’t send the second guy?
by supermarioelia on May 22, 2008 10:25 PM EDT reply actions
First guy, no chance really. Ben Fran isn’t Ichiro anyway, let’s not overdramatize this.
Second guy could have been prevented by a better play on the first ball, which reportedly was poorly thrown by Dellucci and also poorly received by Blake.
My thoughts on the second one were that the Sox 3rd base coach didn’t even hesitate sending the runner…and maybe Ben would’ve made him hesitate just a bit. Maybe nothing.
by supermarioelia on May 22, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I think news of Francisco’s arm striking fear into opposing third-base coaches has been slightly exaggerated.
I’m not talking about Ben’s rep or lack of a rep, I’m talking about how the first throw likely wouldn’t have sucked, thus creating more fear than Looch’s noodle arm throw did.

The real shame tonight was that Casey lost his three game hitting streak, which had shot his average from .223 to .229.
So, who gets thrown under the bus? Or, do we have another closed door meeting and a pep talk about grinding and fighting through it. I’ve had it. It really IS time for a change.
A suggestion: hire a hitting coach who is aware that it’s possible to hit to the opposite field and can explain this principle to hitters.
Being thrown under the bus would infer that they don’t realize how awful they are. They should all voluntarily lay in front of the bus and let it drive over them.
Only if they let Hafner or Blake drive the bus.

it would be one thing if he understood righty-lefty interaction… but he doesn’t even knwow that .
Give Marte a Chance. FIRE SHELTON. Find Wedge a Hot Seat.
This would be so glorious. And let’s hire a Hispanic manager just to really be different. Our lineup tomorrow against a lefty would be:
Grady
BenFran
Dog from Taco Bell Commercials
Vic (even if his finger is broken)
Jhonny
Gark
Gutz
Aba
Manny
Imagine how that lineup would perform for a Manny Acta type guy? OHhhhh gooddd…I just made a mess of my keyboard.
