Carmona to DL — Lewis sent down, Elarton and Mujica called up
Bullpen moves not learned on Facebook — Jensen Lewis sent down, Ed Mujica and Scott Elarton brought up, and Julio left alone. Carmona was officially placed on the DL. A busy Saturday.
Elarton was added to the 40-man, bringing that total to 40. I confess I'd lost track of this; I thought Whoa Nelly Perez was #40, but the list prior to these moves only shows 39. (Perez did take the 40th spot at the time, but the team freed up a spot when Breslow was DFA'ed yesterday. —Jay)

Oh and it would be pretty darn cool if Mujica actually became useful at the big league level. This is really his first legitimate shot at sticking with the big club, rather than just being a stop-gap for a few days.
Mario, perhaps you need to refer back to the diagram of the COT posted earlier in the season. As you’ll notice, Mujica is nowhere near it. Sadly…this is a reality that was written by the God Krom into the Riddle of Steel long before Wedge, Mujica, or you and I were born (in an age undreamed of…) and Wedge is powerless to act against it. And Krom also said Andy Marte will never be Cleveland’s starting 3B…

Also, were you still thinking about going to the Tigers game next Sunday?

oh…let me get back to you on that when I get back to the states next week. But I think so. Is it possible for me to still get 2 tickets?
I bought mine a while ago, since I’m going with three friends from class. It looks like you can still get pairs of tickets through the Tigers box office…they’re Limited View (as are my tickets) which apparently means that people in the aisles waiting to go back to their seats might be in your way. I’m in section 332 just so ya know. Let me know if you end up goin, we’ll meet up before for many beers.

Relievers come and relievers go. Even in an era of Facebook, iPhones, Twitter, etc. it’s hard to keep track.
I will say that I’m excited about Mujica, and even moreso over Elarton. I’ve estimated for a long time that he can be effective in the pen. We could have used a long man last night.
Julio treads the thinnest ice. I expected him to be gone today.
Maybe they want to work with Lewis on mechanics to get his velocity back up. Keeping Julio up is a mystery to me, though he has had flashes of effectiveness until his last few outings. And, yes, Elarton would have been a great option to have for long relief last night.

Jensen seems to be taken this stoically. 5 minutes ago he changed his Facebook status to “Everything happens for a reason.”
I look forward to seeing some good numbers from him and then his status update obsessively so I can report back as to when he is coming back to the Bigs.
Il faut d'abord durer.
I think they’re giving Elarton an audition. When Westbrook returns, someone will get dumped. It won’t be Laffey, since Carmona is hurt. So, either Mujica goes back to Buffalo, or they DFA Julio or Elarton. I suppose it’s possible they’ll simply send Mujica right back, but if Elarton pitches and pitches well, they may decide to ditch Julio. That may be the plan, actually. Assuming they’re being honest about wanting Lewis to work on his velocity, they needed to call someone up to replace him (i.e., they didn’t feel he should stay with the club for now). Mastny is the only other guy on the 40 man besides Miller and Sowers; they’ve seen him (and he apparently has some arm problems, although he’s been pitching). Miller and Sowers seem to be being prepared as starters, so keeping Julio may just be to keep a seat warm for Westbrook. Or, maybe they just closed their eyes when Julio was pitching lately.
What's left to prove
After 1,050 innings and a career ERA over 5, the only thing left Scot Elarton has to prove is we Indians fans have no limit to wishful thinking.
He has to not be terrible. I like his chances.
I don’t see what the big deal about a career ERA over 5 is, as a starter. Jamey Wright is a failed starter too (he and Elarton are very similar); Wright pitched pretty well against us this past series, no?
It’s a case-by-case basis thing though, isn’t it? My memory of the decision is a little hazy, but I didn’t like it when we moved Danys Baez to the closer spot. Could he just not handle the workload? If a pitcher an effective starter he should remain one (unless they have Papelbonian potential, and I’m not even convinced that he’s best suited to close).
I’ve tabbed Odalis Perez and Vicente Padilla as potential Mesa’s.
Random: If the next out Kyle Farnsworth records isn’t a K, he’ll have exactly as many career Ks (697) as IP.
