It’s very quiet around these parts lately.

This is getting to be the most depressing part of every day for me.

The only players who have played in our last 9 games: Grady, BenFran…..and Casey Blake. Haha and he’s totally earned it too. Over his past 8 games: 3-23, .130 avg, .259 obp, .130 slg….yeah I’d say a 389 OBP warrants this treatment.

and what … 2 errors?

But that was such a cool unnecessary spin he did last night!

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

at least he isn’t batting second. i was sure that in wedge’s mind, blake hitting 2 last night was the chief explanation for the end of the losing streak.

by mpstable on May 25, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

To me, the best argument in favor of playing Marte, the one that really doesn’t have a contra, is that Casey Blake - straight up - he’s not a major league starter anymore. Just isn’t. I’m beginning to wonder if he’s even a super-ute guy. I mean, yeah, he can play the corners, but he’s got to hit like he sort of belongs at at least ONE of them, right? If he can’t play a skill position, on a team with a legit 3-position outfielder and like 5 first basemen, do we really need him? For anything?

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If this somehow drags on until August, I’m nabbing a press pass for the Jays-Indians series, and Wedge will hear my wrath.

And CC has worked his way into the top FORTY in AL ERA!

Well, I guess Frank could be a whale of a fourth outfielder. I just had higher hopes.

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Wait. Who’s our third outfielder now?

by Denver Tribe Fan on May 25, 2008 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

At the moment, it seems to me that Frank and Dave are multi-position platooning, with Grady and Ben playing full-time. I’m calling Frank “fourth” in the sense that Michaels was fourth.

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Sizemore
BenFran
Pronk
VMart
Aubrey
Jhonny
Dellucci
Blake
Asdrubal

I like this lineup (given our offense, that is). Was I the only one secretly hoping for Wedge to switch VMart and BenFran in the order? Besides speed, Victor would be a nice guy to bat behind Grady

You have no idea the physical toll that three vasectomies have on a person

by jakesinger777 on May 25, 2008 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I agree with this…might as well put BenFran’s slugging to use.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Eeeeh, as much as it pains me to say it, Victor sans slugging is not really a top- or meat-of-the-order hitter, because he can’t run. That’s not to say he’s never going to slug again, but if just two or three more guys were playing in the neighborhood of their career lines, I think Vic would be a candidate to get bumped down.

Speakin of Choo, what the heck is with his reverse splits so far? 1 for 16 on the season against righties, and 6 for 12 with a homer and a couple doubles against lefties. No way they bring him up if he can’t hit righties. Unless they plan on reverse platooning him and BenFran haha.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

If I remember right, Choo didn’t have much of an average split, but he had a really empty line against lefties.

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

My open question of the week: How long is Garko’s leash? Do we really need two first basemen?

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

can garko be sent to Buffalo?

by inferno on May 25, 2008 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure can. I think he’s got at least one option left.

by fleerdon on May 25, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Can someone please explain something about options to me? Neyer says this about options:

“One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be “optioned out” three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.

When you hear that a player is “out of options,” that means he’s been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he’ll have to clear waivers.”

So when people say “one option left” do you mean this is the last season during which he can be sent down?

by Denver Tribe Fan on May 25, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds right to me..

by jakesinger777 on May 25, 2008 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So when people say "one option left" do you mean this is the last season during which he can be sent down?

Not exactly. It means he has one more season. It doesn’t have to be this year. Lee was optioned after he had been in the majors for four years.

This gets further complicated when the player has five full years of MLB service.

Probably waiting for Aubrey to start struggling.

by gahnki on May 25, 2008 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling we’re sitting on a trade, of the multi-player type. Lots of signs pointing that way – Shap openly discussing it, obvious needs, logjams at several positions, fringe players out of options, a sense that the division is still winnable but there is something fundamentally wrong with this team…..

Yo never want to underestimate Shapiro’s ability to do nothing, of course, but I’m expecting some news.

Jim Donovan (the one with the girly voice) only does WKYC games, basically the Sunday day games. The rest of the week (on STO) his place is taken by the eloquent Matt Underwood. Manning we get all the time. Feel our pain.

Strained exterior hip muscle, I believe. Better than an interior, for whatever that is worth. He can maybe start playing catch in a week. All things considered, this might not be too bad, seeing as it might save his arm a bit. Of course, Laffey and Westbrook need to be strong, and the offense needs to get going.

I know what you mean. I was at an all time high of $7 two days ago. Now I’m at about $3. I’m trying to crawl back up, but these last few days have frustrated me. I’m considering putting all my money I have left on the Lakers tonight and just hoping to get lucky.

Right now, I have 50 cents on a Yankees/Indians parlay and I put some cash on a supposedly surefire MLS bet.

I have found that it’s better to just enjoy following the games instead of gettting caught up in the money. Much less frustrating.

It certainly seems that way. I’m a Heat fan so my NBA playoffs viewership has been very neutral (though I was definitely pulling for CP3). I thought centsports would help me get into it more but I found that I enjoy the games more when I just watch and enjoy as opposed to cheering for over/unders or point spreads.
That friend who was over $30 didn’t do so naturally, by the way. There were a lot of glitches with soccer betting (in the champions league), such that he was able to somehow get 4-game parlay odds (with a multiplier over 15) on 2 separate individual games, and won them both. The result was that he won $16 on two $1 bets.

I made some MLB money, because their line supplier had a glitch. Even against great pitchers the O/U would be 9. There was a Brandon Webb/ Jake Peavy matchup (I believe) and the line was 9. Too good to pass up with those two pitchers.

Unfortuantely, he system worked some things out, and now the lines are much more believeable.

I was going to make a FanPost out of this, but does Garko even practice behind the plate anymore? And is there not a use to trying to get him servicable back there with how Shoppach is looking behind the plate? If he’s a lost cause, fine, but this is something I never hear about.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

by macasson on May 25, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I’d say his defense this year has been a little less than expected, but I don’t put much into it just being some flukiness

by hans on May 25, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

well then let me correct my retort, have you seen how Garko has looked at the plate lately?

by hans on May 25, 2008 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha this is valid. I guess I’m more wondering if Garko ever turns it around and Shoppach continues to flail, has the organization officially closed the book on Garko being anything more than an emergency 3rd catcher?

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess is he is a lost cause as a catcher. I think they would have kept him as an option (i.e. they would have worked him back there every once in a while during past season) if to only keep his value as a trade able commodity up.

by hans on May 25, 2008 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’d be a shame if they don’t work him out behind the plate between games…unless of course he acknowledged to them that he knew he could never become adequate behind the plate on a regular basis.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, he’d be quite valuable as a catcher if he was able to be even just below avg. defensively. But alas, my guess is he’s terrible defensively.

by hans on May 25, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

And he must be beyond repair too, because we saw how extra work can help defensively with Vic. But my guess is that Vic at his worst was still better than anything Garko can offer.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m making an inference here, but I think Garko is likily available to catch only in a pinch (freak injury to both Vic and Shoppach in a game or something)......Although I betcha Blake has been working on his catching ability so he can start robbing at-bats from victor once he gets tired of robbing Marte.

by hans on May 25, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

We’re going to worry about Kelly’s bat because of a handful of games? That’s just silly.

Even sillier is that idea that putting Garko behind the plate would be the answer. Garko’s worst stretch of the season was a lot worse than Shoppach’s, and his defense was never any good.

by Jay on May 25, 2008 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

A handful of games? I know it’s scattered but here are his stats since last July:

29-153, .190 avg, .220 obp, .313 slg, .533 ops.

Granted we may not expect anything more out of our bakcup catcher, fine. But what I’m saying is that it would be wonderful if Garko were to heat up and be available if they wanted to give Vic a day off behind the plate.

All I’m wondering is what reason have they given for not at least working out Garko behind the plate between games? Is he a lost cause back there? Does he admit this himself? I don’t think that being content with Shoppach as our backup is a sufficient answer.

by supermarioelia on May 25, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s still only 153 at-bats, it’s six weeks for a starter. Still not a big deal.

Anyway, if you’re going to worry about something, worry about the strikeouts.

Garko was never going to be a good catcher. He may have worked himself into being a decent one with 5-6 starts a week, but how good do you think he’ll be after not having played the position in three years?

by Jay on May 25, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh he’s probably atrocious now, beyond repair. I wonder if there was ever any consideration of him at least catching in simulated games, at least as a sort of hobby.

Alright, although Jhonny may be to blame for not improving his bunting since the last time we saw him do this, how does Wedge not know that he still sucks? He’ll complain in the post-game that guy didn’t do the little things, but then don’t put your guys in a position you know they’ll fail in!

by jakesinger777 on May 25, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Putting your guys in a position they can fail in gives your guys chances to turn their failures around. A good coach would have Peralta bunting a lot in practice, which Wedge probably has. Peralta probably improved this, and because of that, Wedge had Peralta bunt in that situation. Peralta had a chance to turn his failures around, but couldn’t do it in the pressure of a real game. When Peralta is able to bunt that ball, he, and Wedge, will know he has overcome a failure.

Just talked to my brother at the game. He thinks Wedge just likes to embarass Jhonny, which actually would fit right in with the Marte theories.

My version of that theory would be, he can’t stand watching Jhonny have a regular at-bat anyway, so it’s always tempting to ask him to bunt.

I’m not scared at all. Our SP is ridiculous, and the Tigers are even worse than us. There’s no way the White Sox can keep up their pace, and the Twins/Royals are young and a non-factor.

The hitting will start up soon. We just need to remove some dead weight. Dellucci will be gone soon and something will happen with Blake.

You know, I was just thinking. Why was Francisco even in right? He had just ended the inning and he wasn’t going to hit for awhile. That is the perfect time for a defensive Gutz substitution.

kevin keane on the postgame show just said perhaps the stupidest thing he has ever said (and that is really saying something). to paraphrase:

first thing is cut andy marte. i believe in karma and respecting the game, and the fact that you kept this guy on your roster out of spring training when he didnt deserve it or earn it means the baseball gods are not gonna give you any breaks

he then blamed francisco’s error today and the blown call on the HR friday night on andy marte. then he suggested having a starting middle infield of cabrera and barfield, with peralta being permanently benched. wow. even typing that just made me dumber.

he did say something not completely idiotic though, which was to cut looch when choo comes back.

Got back from the game a while ago. Stewed for a bit. Read this thread.

Boy, at least it was a peach of a day for a ball game (maybe the best of the year so far). If nothing else, it was fantastic to relax, soak up the sun and watch another rookie pitcher look like ‘68 model Bob Gibson.

Still, we can sweep the Sox starting tomorrow and start to reverse all of this in a hurry. Right?

My only real gripe about the game was bunting Peralta in the 8th. Eric and co. know that is not his strong suit, so why put him in a position to fail? A wasted at bat in a game where one at bat could have made the difference.

Anyways, the say bad teams find a new way to lose every night. The Indians must not be a bad team, because they lose the same damn way .. every night.
