I posted this in macasson’s diary, but this seems like a more appropriate place.
Did anyone else read Pluto’s take on Hafner’s swing in today’s PD (or cleveland.com, linked through the Browns’ page)? Anyone think it’s legitimate?
Here’s the link. And part of the passage as a tease:
There is something wrong with Travis Hafner’s swing. The result is that he seems to be "pulling his head out." That means he’s not following the ball with his eyes. It also means that his right shoulder tends to move up—creating an uppercut swing. There are some things that he’s doing earlier in his at-bat that causes all this, but that’s the problem.

Yea, I have to say that this is getting ridiculous. Marte can do no worse than Casey Blake.
Hell, all of us could do no worse at this point.
As desperate as Wedge appears to be to infuse life into the hitters, you’d think he’d be willing to try just about any reasonable thing. Thus, the continuing non-presence of Marte makes me think that he’s really stinking the joint up in BP and other drills. This must run deeper that just any personal misgivings; Wedge must have some evidence that makes him believe that a lineup with Marte in it is actually worse than one without him, regardless of how poorly the regulars are hitting.

do you think it helps Laffey that we’ve got too other GB-pitchers on the staff (albeit very different in their own right)?
by APV on May 4, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Helps? How? Like they talk to him about strategy?
Maybe. I dunno. I think it’s more that the organization has a penchant for these guys and focuses on their development. Even the ones who don’t have a great sinker, like Sean Smith, have still gotten results by just pounding the zone.
I was thinking of both advice, but also coaches having a better sense of how to get the most out of his stuff

I don’t….I’ll take his defense even while his offense is struggling. And I think his offense will come back around.
by APV on May 4, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I know, I think I’m in the minority here, we discussed this at length in the offseason, especially with Haren rumors. I really like his defense, but I don’t see how he is going to approach “non-tradeable” status with that swing.
Leaving aside your apparently obtuse evaluation of AbaCab as player (or prospect), you seem to be under the impression that we have other great 2B/SS options for 2009-2013. Maybe you could identify them for me, because I have no idea who they are. Our best middle infield prospects, in no particular order, are:
- • Josh Rodriguez, marginal defense at SS and expected to move to 2B, a year older than AbaCab and (so far) putting up poorer numbers in Akron at 23 than AbaCab did at 21.
- Carlos Rivero, will turn 20 in a couple weeks, standout defender at SS but not explosive with the bat, if he can get as far as AbaCab did by age 21 next season, that will be good news.
- Jared Goedert, will turn 23 later this month and is a bit old for Kinston, decent 2B but may eventually move to 3B if his bat allows, some injury problems, frankly looking a bit like the next Joe Inglett at the moment.
I’m about as big of a Peralta guy as there is around here, but I can’t say he’s necessarily the answer beyond our 2011 club option. And as fringy as Peralta’s defense is at SS, Barfield’s isn’t much better at 2B, and his bat is fringy at any position.
So AbaCab is more or less untradeable because if he were at Buffalo right now, he would be considered by far both our best and our closest prospect for the middle infield, and especially for shortstop, and we do not have great depth overall at these positions.
by Jay on May 5, 2008 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I totally agree with you. Like I said originally, I don’t like that Asdrubal is untradeable, but he is because of our lack of organizational depth at middle IF. But leaving aside relative value to position, I don’t think he is a good hitter, and I don’t like that a below average hitter is untradeable.
No way in hell anybody’d trade for Hafner and his contract – no way.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
Again, if Mike Hampton and his contract could get traded - with six years and $84.5 million left on his deal - anything is possible. Colorado ate 43% of the contract - some of it indirectly, by taking on two smaller bad contracts from the Marlins - but Atlanta agreed to take on the other 57%—$48.5 million over six years.
Hafner will still be owed $51.75 at the end of 2008, and 57% of that is about $29.5 million. Some team could buy low on Hafner, committing that much money over four years with a fifth-year option, betting essentially that he can turn it around. With the amount of money floating around MLB, don’t be surprised if some team was willing to do that.
After all, Hampton certainly wasn’t any more impressive in his pre-collapse years than Hafner was in his.
So how much longer before Shap sends AstrCab to Buffalo?
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
Right now your sister Eileen is a better option than AstroCab.

Is this the second game in a row that Laffey has been hurt by a Blake error? Or am I thinking of another game?
Several of the Yankees hits in the 4-run 6th last Monday were infield hits to third – not sure that Blake had a good play on any of them, IIRC, but that’s probably what you’re thinking of.

I say we just bring up the whole Lake County team for a series. They’re all pretty old anyway, and it likely doesn’t matter when their option clocks get started. Let’s just put the whole team on the DL (posiiton players, that is), bring up the Captains, and see what happens.

well, we can’t give up. This is still a one run game, and who knows, maybe Soria’s arm will fall off and some other guy will come in and promptly throw 16 straight balls. We can win this! or at least tie.
At this point, I think Breslow Mastny and Perez are all turning in roughly equivalent performances. And as the last Mastny/Breslow outings proved, they need semi-regular work to be effective.
In conclusion, I don’t feel using either Mastny or Breslow would be “giving up” I feel like it would be “managing.”
To continue this one-sided conversation, last year the COT was all cute and shit cause we won 96 games and all the COT members were almost flawless down the stretch. This year is feeling different. Like the overreliance on Raffies could doom them.

Well, look at it this way. The Indians have received offensive zeroes from 3B, SS, 2B, and 1B, DH, and 1/2 the LF platoon. They’ve received no relief from Betancourt, Perez, and Borowski. Three guys in our bullpen will never enter a meaningful game.
And this team is only a few games below .500.
There have been no major injuries and Masa looks usable. But aside from that, everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. Things can and will only get better from here. The rest of the Central division isn’t going anywhere.

It’s not supposed to make you feel better. They suck right now. But they won’t all year. Well…Blake might.
No. Normally you give a guy more than a month to work it out. But with the rest of the team struggling, you need a jumpstart. Marte won’t save the world, but he can hit .200/.300/.360 as Blake has, and, more importantly, he could outhit Blake for the rest of the year too. I truly believe that. Add in that fact that Blake’s outta here after ‘08, and there’s no reason not to.
Blake has given the Indians the perfect excuse to make the transition to Marte.

they are the best regular season team in the East for a reason. And they got home court for it. But now, its the playoffs, and I think the Cavs match up very well against them. This should be a war.

by Jay on May 4, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not the CGI is hard to watch – it’s when that’s all there is to the movie. You know like when the only thing you can say about the flick is, “Wow did you see how realistic the dragon was”. That’s my definition of a boring flick.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
You’ve made it pretty clear in past remarks, Chuck, that for movies that required a lot of CGI to make, you’re not willing to watch them long enough to see if “that’s all there is to the movie.”
Well I gotta attibute your impression to my poor communication skills. What I meant to say is I just want more than pretty visuals – a good movie’s gotta have a plot that holds my attention and characters I can care about – without that it just another IMAX flick to me.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
Nope. I was just thinking about Rick Ankiel, and how you were dead right about him. Which means that I was also right about him; unlike all of my preseason predictions for this club, which aren’t taking shape at all.
Ya know the numbers don’t tell ya everything. Like one a my med school profs kept sayin’, “look at the patient – he’ll tell you what you need to know.”
And, oh yeah, zempf still won’t admit that he thought that Ankiel wouldn’t be a very good MLer.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
Nah, I’ll admit that I thought he wouldn’t be a good major league hitter. I have to say, the way he’s increased his walk rate this year is pretty impressive & he could end up being useful despite what I thought. Considering he’s still south of 300 at-bats as a position player, though, I’m going to continue to reserve judgement.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
And the fact that he’s south of 300 ABs tells me he’s only gonna improve. Most 24 y.o.’s who are in the ML have had 1,000s of pro-ball ABs. Ankiel’s done it with a third of that. The boy just doesn’t fit into your paradigm – he’s an exceptional talent in every sense of the word.

Nothing violent, I just couldn’t stand up. Bouncers politely asked me and three friends to leave the bar. For those on facebook I’d say a recently posted video of me tells the tale.
