Designated OF Jason Michaels for Assignment

Recalled OF Ben Francisco from Buffalo (AAA)

Yes, Michaels was hitting just .207/.258/.276 so far this season. Yes, he's making the type of money that Indians wouldn't think much of to dump. And yes, Ben Francisco, an outfielder, was the best available bat in the minors. But even with all those components, the Indians wouldn't have made this move if the offense wasn't horrible. Because carrying a struggling platoon outfielder isn't that much of a burden on even a below average offensive club. It wasn't Jason Michaels struggling that earned him a ticket out of town, it was Travis Hafner, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Casey Blake. Something needed to change, and Michaels was it.

Even with the sudden glut of outfielders on the waiver wire, Michaels should find a home somewhere. Even though the idea of him as a starter came and went, he's still an attractive fourth outfielder. He's a solid defender on the corners and could probably still play center if needed. He didn't play much center for the Indians because Grady Sizemore almost never takes a day off, and even when he does, Franklin Gutierrez was the obvious choice.

If we use the same standard in judging Michaels, Ben Francisco hasn't hit much in Buffalo. A .623 OPS with the Bisons could mean Ben was bored, but whatever the underlying reason, his April was not the reason the Indians brought him up. Ben had an excellent Spring Training, had an outstanding 2007 AAA season (.318/.382/.496), and had success in the limited time he spent in Cleveland. And he's the best offensive player the Indians had available in the minors.

Most of Ben's value lies in his bat, which has been consistent throughout his minor-league travels. He has good speed, though I think it will manifest itself better running the bases rather than stealing them.  He probably shouldn't play much in center, though the Indians have center covered. He's not going to fit in Jason Michael's old role as the right-handed platoon outfielder. Eric Wedge will probably have to run a three-man rotation on the corners to get David Dellucci, Franklin Gutierrez, and Francisco meaningful playing time. If Travis Hafner continues to struggle, perhaps Francisco could see some games as the DH.

Bringing up Francisco is not going to turn the Indians' offense around. He certainly isn't going to make up for Travis Hafner hitting .209/.305/.345 or Asdrubal Cabrera hitting below the Mendoza Line. But at this point, the Indians need any little production gain they can find.

He made that unbelievable staggering catch on Opening Day 2007 in Chicago, falling down on the warning track with Sizemore beating him up. Harrelson was sure the game was over, with the good guys prevailing.

It wasn’t Opening Day, it was game two. A cold, miserable day with snow flurries. I know…I sat in it.

I think the one point Ryan missed here is that BenFran has an upside. He’s probably not going to ever be an All-Star outfielder, but Michaels was never going to be one. That’s an important difference when you’re a team like the Indians, at least in my opinion. Francisco isn’t really young anymore (26, turning 27 in October), but he’s had success in the minors and hasn’t had a real shot in the bigs (68 ABs in 2 seasons).

So while Ryan is right on that it wasn’t Michaels struggles that got him DFA’d, they didn’t help. He’s definitely struggling, and if we gave him 250-300 ABs for the year, we know we we’d get; around .270, maybe a bit lower as he’s not as young as he was, a couple of homeruns, and an OPS+ in the high 80s. BenFran might not end up giving us much more, but there is a chance that he might give us quite a bit more, and at this point, that’s important enough to say goodbye to Michaels, wish him well, and hope that BenFran helps spark us in May the same away Asdrubal seemed to last August and September.

Il faut d'abord durer.

Hmm, substitute “Marte” for Francisco, and “Blake” for Michaels, and it remains just as true.

by tabler84 on May 6, 2008 5:30 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just to put this in perspective…

Ben Francisco’s career minor-league OPS: .814
Jason Michaels’ career minor-league OPS: .819

I think Ben’s remaining upside is pretty small. He’s 26, and normally hitters don’t “grow” a whole lot after their mid-20s. But if you want to compare the two now, I think Francisco is the better hitter because he can hit righ-handed pitching and Michaels can’t. If the Indians made him a semi-regular starter, they’ll get more production out of their outfield with this lineup than if they stuck with the left field platoon plus Gutierrez.

by Ryan on May 6, 2008 8:27 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree, 100%. I’m about as big a Francisco supporter as exists out there, and have been for quite awhile (check my diaries). But Francisco’s not going to come in and put up a .900 OPS or anything like that. Francisco is, at best, something like Coco Crisp without quite as good a defense. But he is a more useful regular than Michaels because he can hit both righties and lefties. And, he does deserve a chance when the only thing in his way is a marginally payed, over 30, platoon outfielder with no future on the team. In an ideal world, Francisco is our 4th outfielder, seeing a couple games of action a week, while Gutierrez and some other better OFer plays regularly in LF.

In a way, this will be the easiest move the Indians will have to make all year. The next few will be much tougher (if we continue this way).

by Toxicadam on May 6, 2008 5:05 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely. I was always skeptical that it would be anybody but Michaels, because among our position players, dumping Michaels was much less painful than any other player will be. I don’t think they want to dump Dellucci, and while they’d eat the rest of his contract, they wouldn’t like it. As for Blake or Marte, if they cut either one of them, it’s a gut-wrenching day for the organization.

The only other relatively painless move the Indians can make would be demoting AbaCab.

by Jay on May 6, 2008 10:18 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I honestly don’t see them dumping anyone else, unless it’s someone like Julio. A trade is another story; that might require them either to include someone like Dellucci or Garko in the deal (to make room for the “replacement”). I think that would be easier for them to do, especially if it was Dellucci who was the one who got traded, since he’s an older player who won’t be here in a couple of years anyway. Demoting Cabrera can happen any time, I suspect—if Barfield were tearing it up in AAA, I think it would have happened already.

From this month’s indians.com mailbag: “Yes, they loved having Nixon as a teammate, but this team’s problems can’t be erased by a pie in the face.”

If only I were as sure of that as I think I should be.

by Jay on May 6, 2008 10:30 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wonder if Hafner won’t, in the short term, lose the most ABs as a result of this move. Having read some of the discussion on defense in other threads, I’m not certain if BenFran takes a lot of RF time away from Gutz.
Moreover, of Dellucci, Gutz, and Pronk, it’s almost certainly Pronk that needs the kick in the rear most.

Also, would Dellucci or Francisco be more likely to DH in that scenario? I think it would be Dellucci, right? Even if Francisco’s D isn’t any different (and I don’t remember if we reached a consensus on that)? Or is that just young guy/old guy bias?

by DaveE on May 6, 2008 12:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Of course, on the “needs a kick in the rear scale”, Francisco is the leader right now. But really, we’re talking about giving Hafner AB’s to Ben Francisco? I’d have to really really be convinced of the mental health benefits to Pronk to consider that. I know we’re frustrated, but yikes.

I’m all for change for the sake of change, when the cost is so low. I mean, that’s why we have hitting coaches – right?

We’re turning this crap around, soon, and it’s just a matter of what arbitrary non-event the columnists will feature when it’s time for the season recap.

We can do our part too: at some point I say we organize a massive and thorough avatar switch out.

From Hoynes, today:

“This is the business side of the game,” said Michaels. “The Indians feel they need to make this move. In Francisco, they’re getting a good player.”

Michaels, like Francisco, had a great spring training. He started the regular season slowly, and was hitting .207 (12-for-58) with nine RBI when he was designated.

“The slow start got me,” said Michaels.

Michaels had one hit in his first 21 at-bats.

Say what you will about his performance on the field, but Michaels does appear to be handling this with some class. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up in Buffalo . . . ?

by macasson on May 6, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The PD reported he did clear waivers, so he could accept an assignment to Buffalo. I would be surprised if another team didn’t express an interest, though, and I doubt he’d go to the minors if he could go to another major league team.

by peter m on May 6, 2008 2:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And with the Sardinha signing (see fanshot), there may not be room on the Buffalo roster for him anyways.

by talonk on May 6, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My guess is Michaels ends up with the Padres.

by xrickx on May 6, 2008 4:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I read somewhere that the Red Sox were interested in Wilkerson as an extra outfielder; if that’s true, they might actually prefer Michaels, who is more mobile, I think, at this point.

by peter m on May 6, 2008 4:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hard to believe they’re looking for yet another CF type, and Michaels isn’t of that much value if you don’t need a CF.

by Jay on May 6, 2008 4:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

my guess is the chisox. they’ve got swisher (yikes) in center, i think. and – for what it’s worth – their peerless broadcasters love the guy.

by macasson on May 6, 2008 6:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What I read was just speculation, I think. But, it had to do with Brandon Moss having an appendectomy and speculation that Coco might get traded (since he’s not happy being a fourth outfielder). Michaels might fit that role better than Coco, I suppose.

by peter m on May 6, 2008 5:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really important, but since we’ve been speculating: the St. Petersburg Times thinks the Rays might be interested in Jason Michaels (who hails from Tampa, or went to school there anyway). Here’s a link (the item is part way down the story).
