Hello all! I am posting from section 328, row D of Yankee Stadium. Just saw the Indians take BP and am trying to avoid starting any shit with all the Yankee gear-clad people here. I predict good things from everyone because… Well, why not? So here’s hoping Pronk clubs a few, Lee pitches a perfect game, & i make my train home. Go Tribe!

Just glimpsed on sportsline’s preview for tonight’s game:
But Chamberlain, a sensation in the bullpen since being called up in August, has had plenty of problems facing Cleveland. Including the postseason, Chamberlain is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA and two blown saves against the Indians. He’s 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA against everyone else.

I can’t prove it, but I always thought the strike call increased in the 1980s, when the Astros and Twins were in some post-seasons. The networks would have overhead cameras in the domes that would often show the bat crossing the plate.
Umps, of course, were all watching at home and had to be influenced by what they saw.
big surprise, i can’t find the mention. i’m pretty sure it was olney (though maybe neyer) who had the feeling that they were being called strikes more often THIS SEASON, so he went to talk to scouts (this is why i think it was olney) and they all told the author that they didn’t feel anything had really changed.
but, yes, this observation has been made by multiple baseball observers, so, maybe? whatever. ben fran got screwed.

I really don’t understand the anti-ESPN thing… they are generic and sometimes give some extra-love to the big markets, and teams that tehy are showing a lot, but it is national TV. Plus, their production level is simply so much better than anything else on there. I’d much rather watch a game on ESPN than any other network

You should be. In rational terms:
1) The chance of us losing the game - even if Marte were somehow an automatic double play - is in the neighborhood of null sets and flying dogs.
2) Hafner was sitting for a clear reason.
3) Marte has had some nice swings tonight; a line drive single and a deep fly out to the deepest part of the yard.
4) If we’re nearly a cinch to win already, and we have a chance to increase our lead no matter who is at the plate, then you are saying one thing and one thing only when you pinch hit:
“I HAVE NO FAITH AND NEVER WILL IN ANDY MARTE. MOVE ALONG PEOPLE.”
Hafner is the most pressing problem this team has. I don’t know what his problems are, or what the dynamic in the dugout is, but I think it’s perfectly rational to pinch hit him against a right handed pitcher who is struggling mightily, giving him a golden opportunity to get a confidence-building hit or sac fly. If he fails, which he did, he’s probably no worse off mentally (can’t go below zero), and we still lead 3-0.
I’m all for giving Marte chances to succeed and build confidence, but I’m much more concerned about Hafner’s confidence.

I dunno. His pitches were staying low in the zone, and we know Pronk doesn’t like them down there. A DP was pretty inevitable.

At the risk of jinxing Raffy, I don’t think there’s any wya he can ever give up a 3-run leadin the 9th. It would take at least an hour and there’s no way any team has that kind of patience.

Hafner: Saddest possible outcome of that AB. Nice of MLB to add it to the list of video highlights.
Let’s not get too up in arms here. Wedge feels that he needs to get Hafner going. I’m sure he thought he wwas putting Hafner in place for a chance to suceed. I would’ve left in Marte, but it’s understandable.

I was able to listen to the game today on mlb.com and had only the NY feed. I couldn’t help but laugh when the announcers were comparing Lee to Ian Kennedy. Going as far to say that Kennedy is just as good as Lee. Really??? I thought to myself as I watched Cliff’s ERA disappear into the Yankee night.. Interesting how they can turn 7 shutout innings into a Yankees fans feel-good story about a minor league pitcher. Their comparison was so in-depth, they even cited the fact that both were left handed pitchers, in the big leagues, that throw in the low 90’s. Damn!!! All I can say, mirror images of each other, and the rest of the LHP league.. But the facts are posted below from the newspaper.
“Kennedy was 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA in six games and 23 2/3 innings for the Yankees before being sent down Sunday. He had 20 walks and 16 strikeouts. ”- Courtesy of Newsday.
