It’s only beginning to sink in that watching Cliff Lee this season has been seeing something historic…in a positive light.

Keep in mind that the other guys on this list made 30+ starts compared to Cliff’s 6, so sample size warnings do apply. But it does give you a pretty good idea how good those 6 starts were.

Right – and I’m sure other pitchers have started like this and tanked. Still, this is pretty impressive.

Not so fast. According ESPN this morning, starts of 6-0 and ERA under 1 have happened only 4 other times since 1968: Clemens, Randy Johnson, Valenzuela, Pedro. All won Cy’s in the respective year.

I know the qualifier of winning all 6 of the first starts may be a little arbitrary, but could there be that many more ERA under 1 after 6 start seasons/?

There’s another thread where people talk about this and basically conclude ESPN either made this up or had other qualifiers they didn’t reveal.

I saw it mentioned in one of the other threads, but I don’t see why this would be wrong. 6-0 in 6 starts, ERA under 1.00, since 1968. I’m not shocked its only happened 5 times.

When watching the game on ESPN last night, they showed other dominant starts to the season. When I saw Fatnando’s name on there, I was curious because his ERA was lower than Cliff’s.

As good as Cliff has been, Fatnando’s start to the 1981 season was even better.

Fatnando’s ERA didn’t break 1.00 until his 10th start. Check out his gamelogs here.

Now look at Lee’s here.

While Lee’s avg gamecore is 73.8 through 6 starts, Fatnando’s was 81.2 through 6 starts and 80.6 through 8 starts and 74.9 through 10 starts. Crazy stuff.

I don't know if anyone else here is a big baseball card geek like I am, but I've been making a few of these and thought I'd share one. Trying to ruin the photo to match the original set is the most enjoyable part. This isn't a particularly good job; the hue needs to be off, and I think I added too much "noise." But here it is!
