Only thing that kinda worries me is that he took a HUGE swing on that one ball last night and the fact it didn’t go out was shocking. Like if that didn’t go out, how is he ever going to put one out? Let’s hope this is exactly like when I complained about Garko’s monster swings not leaving the yard.

I like having Francisco in the OF with Byrd on the bump. Having him bat 5th though, two spots in front of Garko… that’s unexpected.

the great thing about this lineup is it leaves proon on the bench for a game-crushing PH appearance.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

I’ve been encoraged by what I’ve seen from Marte, but I still like having Casey around. He’s so damn versatile.
I think that was a media creation, and it was premised on our letting Belliard go after 2004, since we had signed Boone. As bad as Blake was at 3B that 2004 season, I doubt the Indians were ever considering putting him at 2B.

The last two days have kinda mellowed me out. I’m less anti-Blake than I was on Monday.

It’s just the fact that Marte is getting time that’s softening me up. If Marte was still going to be riding the pine every day, my seething hate would continue to… well, uhmm… seeth and hate.

I went out last night to The Local, Atlanta’s home of the $2.50 PBR tallboys.
My stomach is NOT HAPPY today. In fact, it’s furious.
how bout some of Masa’s saki?
Lastly, a quick anecdote from last night’s postgame. Masa Kobayashi brought out a bottle of celebratory saki to share with his teammates, I guess it was pretty strong stuff. Hafner said it tasted like tequila. Dellucci took one sip, winced and said, “I could put this in my car and get 30 miles to the gallon.”
Found it pretty funny, but didn’t warrant a FanShot.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.

No drinking yet for me. Way hungover. Trivia night last night, my buddies and I won a $250 bar tab which we immediately spent. Ugh. I’m going to watch some baseball and then go running until I vomit. Ah, summertime.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Last night was Lazy Dog. I’ve never done that one, but we used to go to Catacombs on Thursdays a bunch.
Il faut d'abord durer.
I’ve been to the Lazy Dog. We did a lot of trivia nights during grad school, at the little Boulder Beer Brewery off Valmont or Old Chicago’s (I know, terrible food). And at that sports bar next to the Fox that’s constantly changing.
No more sports bar next to the Fox, the Sink and Mamacita’s are the only places left on the hill with a liquor license. I avoid Old Chicago and BJs like the plague.
Lazy dog is always crowded, last night was packed but we got a table because we were there early and there were several pretty girls with us willing to con guys out of theirs.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Hherrmmann keeping the scoreboard clean in Akron this morning.
Although I can’t say we’ve seen or read much that suggests that he’d be useful at the top level.

Dear LGT,
Why all the vitriol directed at Casey? He’s gritty, and he gives it his damnedest. Why aren’t we angry at Wedge instead?
I mean, I know Wedge gets heat, but way too many people also bash Blake like he’s a terrible guy. I love him, I just hate when he plays every game.
It’s like, are you mad at oil companies for making money, or are you mad at government for giving them extra cash?

In the last week, we’ve given up 47 runs (earned and unearned) in 18 games, which is an average of 2.61. Our ERA is 2.47 over those games.
So we can agree very few runs will be scored.

Bill James wrote a lot about this in one of his books. Basically, Yankee fans everywhere threatened a nation-wide boycott of the HOF if Rizzuto wasn’t inducted. Steinbrenner said the Yankees wouldn’t play in the annual HOF game. They caved.
It was 857, league average was 773, OPS+ was 122, and he is a shortstop.
More fun stuff from B-Ref:
Gray Ink: Batting – 46 (529) (Average HOFer ≈ 144)
HOF Standards: Batting – 18.9 (689) (Average HOFer ≈ 50)
HOF Monitor: Batting – 87.0 (184) (Likely HOFer > 100)

8. Bill Hallman (928)

As a shortstop, that might be okay - it’s better than Vizquel - but he really only played for 13 years.
Vizquel has 1000 more hits, 177 more doubles, 9 more triples, 39 more home runs and 231 more stolen bases.
by Jay on May 8, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions
And I realize errors don’t mean much, but Vizquel has 80 fewer errors in 1000 more games.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Of course errors matter.
The difference between an error and a putout/assist is the same as between a groundout and a single.
by Jay on May 8, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
True, but errors also depend a lot on the official scorer & stuff. That great a difference over that many more games definitely points to Vizquel’s abilities, but as Jeter shows us, they never give you an error if you just don’t make a play on a ball. You only get an error if you try to make a play & fail.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Well, right, fielding percentage isn’t everything and has some stability issues—just like batting average. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.

The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.
I was just reading an article somewhere about that, it does happen, but not that often. I recall it mentioning Sam McDowell being switched out for someone because Frank Howard owned him – check out this boxscore, it shows McDowell as p, 2b, p.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Jeff Nelson was talking about this on the radio our here in seattle a few weeks ago. I forget if Pinella did it with him (and the M’s) or if torre did it with the yankees. He said it was because he was a beast shagging fly balls during BP.
The most shocked person in the stadium was the leftfielder he replaced.
Found this cool description (love it when reporters use the “Mr.” tag with athletes);
When Chris Resop, a Braves relief pitcher, was warming up in the bullpen during an April 3 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the coaches asked when he had last played the outfield. “I said a few years ago in the minors. And that’s where they left it,” Mr. Resop says. “I had no idea why they asked.”
Braves manager Bobby Cox was desperate, and he was plotting an ingenious plan. He was nearly out of right-handed pitchers, and players can’t re-enter a game after they’ve been removed. If Mr. Resop, a righty, could play the outfield, that would allow Mr. Cox to replace him on the mound temporarily - and use a lefty specialist to pitch to Adam LaRoche - without losing him entirely. So after Mr. Resop pitched to three batters in the top of the 10th inning, Mr. Cox had him go to left field. When Mr. Resop returned to the pitcher’s mound one batter later, it marked the first time a pitcher had pitched, played the field and pitched again in the same game since Jeff Nelson of the Seattle Mariners in 1993, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
re; giambi and soft-tossing righties, yes neyer cited an article by steve lombardi of Was Watching and this quote:
In summary, it appears evident that Jason Giambi cannot hit a Power pitcher. And, there’s some evidence to suggest that Giambi’s best success against a Finesse pitcher only comes when the pitcher makes a mistake. In total, as a batter, left to his own skill, Giambi - over the last three years - is worthless.
The next day, Neyer cited a counter-argument.

I would take a Sac fly honestly

Here’s the thing with Skinner on that play.
To get Gootz, they’ve got to have good throw, good catch, good throw, good catch, good tag, and that’s assuming the throw beats the runner.
Gootz is one of our fastest guys, so you send him in that situation. I think it’s a pretty standard thing.
And I know we suck on the sac flies this year, but there was 1 out.

So the conclusion I draw from this is that your new defense for all questionable coaching decisions is “It’s a pretty standard decision” “They were playing it by the book.”
Just kidding.
No, just the irrational ones.
I don’t think Skinner is very good, but that job is totally damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t.

Really, I’m starting to realize that the only way to be rational about sports is to insist on avoiding being results-oriented when the entire culture ONLY emphasizes results.
Essentially, it’s turned me into a high-functioning schizophrenic because the emotional reactions are so strong and sudden and then I remember to be rational and I’m over it.
I remember being so furious about the Colts rolling over on the Titans last year, week 17. I was outraged and then I got rational and realized the Browns were on their way, regardless of a one-game playoff appearance.
For whatever it’s worth, I was basically in a funk clear into March after the ALCS loss. The rational side only has so much sway over the mind.

ok, i see your point…but this being the majors, no one should be surprised to see that sequence happen pretty flawlessly a lot of the time

I think you would find that make-the-defense-execute is a pretty popular strategy on balls to the outfield, in particular with a fast baserunner putting extra pressure on.

Screw trying to get hits, just send ground balls to Jeter. You gotta figure the amount of balls he can’t get to is higher than our batting average.
Il faut d'abord durer.
