Dat’s a…unique lineup.

Not if we’re in Winter Haven.

Should we be worried about Victor?

by gte619n on May 8, 2008 12:15 PM EDT reply actions

Not long term. But it makes you wonder if this will linger for a few days.

by dgcambridge on May 8, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m a little concerned about his lack of SLG so far this season, but the neck thing doesn’t worry me.

by mrich on May 8, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Only thing that kinda worries me is that he took a HUGE swing on that one ball last night and the fact it didn’t go out was shocking. Like if that didn’t go out, how is he ever going to put one out? Let’s hope this is exactly like when I complained about Garko’s monster swings not leaving the yard.

by supermarioelia on May 8, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I remember that one, and Vic actually watched it for a half second like he thought it was gone.. and it wasn’t even a deep fly ball. Worrisome.

by mrich on May 8, 2008 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I was lucky enough to be at the game last night, and a lot of balls seemed to just die out there.

by Goodie on May 8, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed the same thing. A few balls that looked crushed turned out to be warning-track shots.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

I like having Francisco in the OF with Byrd on the bump. Having him bat 5th though, two spots in front of Garko… that’s unexpected.

by mrich on May 8, 2008 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly, that’s what makes it look funny. I say “look”, because we often read way too much into lineup construction. Especially when its not a consistent year long thing.

the great thing about this lineup is it leaves proon on the bench for a game-crushing PH appearance.

The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

I am serious. I bet he could even play 2B in a disaster scenario.

by gte619n on May 8, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember how he was a real possibility before we signed Belliard?

by Voltaire on May 8, 2008 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that was a media creation, and it was premised on our letting Belliard go after 2004, since we had signed Boone. As bad as Blake was at 3B that 2004 season, I doubt the Indians were ever considering putting him at 2B.

For PBR in Atlanta you have to go to Moe’s and Joe’s on Tuesday nights in the Highlands. I’m sure it’s gone up some, but last time I was there a pitcher was still $3.25, with a bucket of popcorn thrown in for another 0.25.

how bout some of Masa’s saki?

Lastly, a quick anecdote from last night’s postgame. Masa Kobayashi brought out a bottle of celebratory saki to share with his teammates, I guess it was pretty strong stuff. Hafner said it tasted like tequila. Dellucci took one sip, winced and said, “I could put this in my car and get 30 miles to the gallon.”

Found it pretty funny, but didn’t warrant a FanShot.

I’ve been to the Lazy Dog. We did a lot of trivia nights during grad school, at the little Boulder Beer Brewery off Valmont or Old Chicago’s (I know, terrible food). And at that sports bar next to the Fox that’s constantly changing.

by dgcambridge on May 8, 2008 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Old Chicago isn’t that bad. A bit more expensive than say Woody’s, but leagues better.

I’m sure it’s different on a Wednesday night, but Lazy Dog is too packed to find a seat up stairs. But then again if you get there early.

by kova on May 8, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

No more sports bar next to the Fox, the Sink and Mamacita’s are the only places left on the hill with a liquor license. I avoid Old Chicago and BJs like the plague.

Lazy dog is always crowded, last night was packed but we got a table because we were there early and there were several pretty girls with us willing to con guys out of theirs.

You gotta be kidding me.

by gte619n on May 8, 2008 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Bill James wrote a lot about this in one of his books. Basically, Yankee fans everywhere threatened a nation-wide boycott of the HOF if Rizzuto wasn’t inducted. Steinbrenner said the Yankees wouldn’t play in the annual HOF game. They caved.

I mean, the guy won an MVP with an 850 OPS!! EIGHT FIFTY!!

by gte619n on May 8, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It was 857, league average was 773, OPS+ was 122, and he is a shortstop.

More fun stuff from B-Ref:

Gray Ink: Batting – 46 (529) (Average HOFer ≈ 144)
HOF Standards: Batting – 18.9 (689) (Average HOFer ≈ 50)
HOF Monitor: Batting – 87.0 (184) (Likely HOFer > 100)

Similar batters:

1. Jose Offerman (953)
2. Claude Ritchey (942)
3. Hughie Critz (940)
4. Lonny Frey (939)
5. Jim Gantner (935)
6. Tom Herr (933)
7. Johnny Evers (929) *
8. Bill Hallman (928)
9. Delino DeShields (927)

Only HOFer on that list is Evers, also widely considered a ridiculous mistake.

As a shortstop, that might be okay - it’s better than Vizquel - but he really only played for 13 years.

Vizquel has 1000 more hits, 177 more doubles, 9 more triples, 39 more home runs and 231 more stolen bases.

And I realize errors don’t mean much, but Vizquel has 80 fewer errors in 1000 more games.

by zempf on May 8, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course errors matter.

The difference between an error and a putout/assist is the same as between a groundout and a single.

by Jay on May 8, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but errors also depend a lot on the official scorer & stuff. That great a difference over that many more games definitely points to Vizquel’s abilities, but as Jeter shows us, they never give you an error if you just don’t make a play on a ball. You only get an error if you try to make a play & fail.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

Jeff Nelson was talking about this on the radio our here in seattle a few weeks ago. I forget if Pinella did it with him (and the M’s) or if torre did it with the yankees. He said it was because he was a beast shagging fly balls during BP.

The most shocked person in the stadium was the leftfielder he replaced.

by macasson on May 8, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Found this cool description (love it when reporters use the “Mr.” tag with athletes);

When Chris Resop, a Braves relief pitcher, was warming up in the bullpen during an April 3 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the coaches asked when he had last played the outfield. “I said a few years ago in the minors. And that’s where they left it,” Mr. Resop says. “I had no idea why they asked.”

Braves manager Bobby Cox was desperate, and he was plotting an ingenious plan. He was nearly out of right-handed pitchers, and players can’t re-enter a game after they’ve been removed. If Mr. Resop, a righty, could play the outfield, that would allow Mr. Cox to replace him on the mound temporarily - and use a lefty specialist to pitch to Adam LaRoche - without losing him entirely. So after Mr. Resop pitched to three batters in the top of the 10th inning, Mr. Cox had him go to left field. When Mr. Resop returned to the pitcher’s mound one batter later, it marked the first time a pitcher had pitched, played the field and pitched again in the same game since Jeff Nelson of the Seattle Mariners in 1993, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

by Roger Dorn on May 8, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

re; giambi and soft-tossing righties, yes neyer cited an article by steve lombardi of Was Watching and this quote:

In summary, it appears evident that Jason Giambi cannot hit a Power pitcher. And, there’s some evidence to suggest that Giambi’s best success against a Finesse pitcher only comes when the pitcher makes a mistake. In total, as a batter, left to his own skill, Giambi - over the last three years - is worthless.

The next day, Neyer cited a counter-argument.

Here’s the thing with Skinner on that play.

To get Gootz, they’ve got to have good throw, good catch, good throw, good catch, good tag, and that’s assuming the throw beats the runner.

Gootz is one of our fastest guys, so you send him in that situation. I think it’s a pretty standard thing.

I remember being so furious about the Colts rolling over on the Titans last year, week 17. I was outraged and then I got rational and realized the Browns were on their way, regardless of a one-game playoff appearance.
