Interesting. I bet that means Nady is really going to get traded! Not to us, I hope.

he just fits better in the NL. a lot more opportunites to sub in late in games over there. that and the NL sucks so he should excel.

Well, our need is impact position players but our MO is to get pitching. My pick:

Charles Benoit is their 31st guy. Sounds about right. Although I prefer someone even earlier in their career. Maybe someone who will not even be as high as Lake County in 2009.

Also, and I only know this from surfing MILB.com, but Rissi Palmer, a rising star, might be available.

First deal with Shapiro’s old assistant, Neal Huntington, GM of the Pirates.
My guess is the PBTNL will turn out to be just more cash, or an organizational soldier type.
You think the Pirates are covering even half of the contract? Sweet deal for them either way … if Michaels settles in, they get to pick up that cheap club option for 2009—and then possibly trade him.

I was going to suggest the PTBNL was Neal Huntington….but I guess that’s not funny now

Castrovince says the Tribe is covering most of the contract, so I would expect a little more than an orginzational player. Certainly not a great prospect, but perhaps someone who you would project to possibly reach the big leagues. Perhaps Jeff Stevens II?

Pittsburgh agreed to pay a prorated share of $600,000, meaning the Pirates will cover just $468,852 of Michaels’ $2.15 million salary, with Cleveland paying the rest.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

A little misleading, about 470K has already been paid, leaving about 1.68M. The Indians owe just over $1 million.
Since sunk costs are sunk, the smart way to look at this is that we’re saving the 469K and getting some small trinket back.

I would just think Pittsburgh would value the talent more than the million bucks. Barring that, I would think that this is a deal where Shapiro is greasing the wheels a bit for later deals. I betcha Huntington either picks up the option, or makes a “talent profit” by dealing Michaels later, possibly both.

I’ll just post a wild guess and say Steve Lerud C, A-ball, 3rd round pick from 2003 draft.

It would be awesome if they just traded J-mike back to us in 6 months. It wouldn’t be unprecedented for that to happen to an Indians team.

I’m picturing a list of 3 guys between A and high-A that the Indians have to choose from between now and the start of short-season leagues. I don’ t think they’re getting anyone great, and certainly not someone who would necessitate a 40-man spot.

Which brings up another good point … dumping Michaels frees up a 40-man spot.

Yes, that may have been a part of their calculation, especially if they’re contemplating a prospects for veteran trade later in the year.

Choo was off of the 40-man while he was on the 60-day, no? If so I must’ve missed what we did to open up his spot when he was transferred to the 15-day.

Not sure if Choo ever was put on the 60 day last year, but if he was … in the offseason there is no DL, so he ended up on the 40 again since we didn’t outright him to Buffalo or release him. At the end of spring training, they put him on the 15 man again.

That is correct … there is no DL in the offseason, so players on the 60-day DL take up spots on the 40-man at that point. The Indians opted to put Choo on the 15-day DL in March, which we can take to mean that they felt they had a greater need to activate Choo before the end of May than they had for that extra 40-man slot in the meantime.
If I’m not mistaken, Choo would have to be moved from the 60 to the 15 in order to go on a rehab assignment.

I think they can go on rehab whether they are on the 15 or the 60.
According to wikipedia (taken with a grain of salt), they can be transferred from the 15 to 60 (I know this is true) but not vice versa. Which sort of makes sense because then you would have to add them back to 40 man roster while they are technically still injured or on rehab.
