Martinez, Barf to DL: Haad, Velandia up
Good for getting Martinez some rest, bad for the season hopes.
UPDATE: Victor is having arthroscopic surgery and isn't expected back until August. To clear the two spots on the 40-man roster, Westbrook has been moved to the 60-day DL — he's expected to be out at least 300 days — and Oneli Perez has been DFA'ed. [Jay]

Where od the 2 spots on the 40 man come from? We get 1 if we move Jake to the 60 day DL, but I’m at a loss for the second.

So…things are pretty bleak right now. And not just because we’re x number of games under .500 and playing crappy…but even more because 3 of our cornerstone guys for the next several years (Westbrook, Hafner, Martinez) are on the DL with fairly substantive injuries which may affect their long term performance. And they simultaneously hurt our trading position.
Let’s Go Stadium Mustard!
I actually never use a recipe. I just make it new everytime based on what I have. But the basic part is about equal parts mustard and olive oil, with other spices/herbs thrown in. It’s great.
Whatever, I’m reining in my expectations for that marinade.

Which elbow?
If it’s his throwing elbow I think we have a new first baseman.

He had extra fingers? Could he loan one to Miller?
Also, I think as of 2008, everybody else was right: The Tigers did, in fact, have the better A. Miller in the AL Central.

You know, if Josh Barfield’s hurt, we’ll have to find somebody else for the Atkins package.

As bad as Martinez and Barfield/Cabrera have hit, it doesn’t really hurt us in the short term having these bench players get some extended playing time.
I don’t think the Giants are a likely trade partner for Sabathia’s services. Yes, he’s from the area and he would have a chance to bat. I would think that the Giants are a little gun shy. See Barry Zito. Cubs and Dodgers are my favorites but we can talk about this in another month if we are still struggling. I hate even numbered years.
96 — eliminated way too soon by underdog
98 — eh, nothing to bitch about, really
00 — missed playoffs on final day
02 — tore apart entire roster to rebuild
04 — brutal bullpen, decent transitional season overall
06 — bullpen, infield defense sink roster ready to contend
08 — you’re soaking in it

You forgot 94—first contending season in most of our lives cut short by strike

The worst part about ‘94 being cut short, for me anyways, wasn’t the Tribe having a successful season cut short, it was all the ignorant White Sox fans talking like the ‘94 Sox were the second coming or something. They were 1 game up when the season ended, and, at least until 2005, they treated it like a World Series season.
Man I hate the White Sox.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Well one very minor positive from all this is that Shapiro can begin shopping Byrd and CC in earnest a little earlier. I’m sure he’ll get a little more back for the extra time that the acquiring team will have them this season.
I’m thinking the Cubs and NYY are hungry enough to overpay.

I’d rather wait until we get into July before pulling the trigger on any trades. Anything in June should get us a big return- someone ML ready, like Joe Carter.

(And ESPN is right in the middle)
Last I saw, he was visiting Mitch Williams’ bowling alley for a showdown. Carter won, of course.
Incredibly, I am not making this up.
Then, maybe Mel Hall???
I don’t want to underestimate the demand for CC by teams desperate to win it all. Besides, shouldn’t we expect to find a few more buyers in July, as teams that are close to contention look to make the big push?
If the Rangers can get Kason Gabbard, Engel Beltre and David Murphy for Eric Gagne, I think we can expect more than that.

Here’s the rub.
Shapiro gets a great offer at the end of June, and knows Player X--and boy, Shap really likes Player X; maybe he sees something the other organization doesn’t—will be pulled from the offer if the other team has to wait another month to use their rental of CC.
It’s a tough call to make. Especially if the Indians are, say, 6 games out and no one really looks strong.
But I say blow it up. Even if we end up doing nothing (or god forbid we’re buyers), we’re still in trouble for 09 with the current roster.

Cripes we’ve officially turned into the Jays with all these injuries. And Velandia? I was making fun of this guy just over a month ago, and now he’s on our 25-man? Eek.by supermarioelia on Jun 12, 2008 5:49 PM CDT actions 0 recs

marte will always be our 25-man.

‘President’ Blake’s comment speaks volumes:
“You look around,” third baseman Casey Blake said, “and it’s like, ‘Well, it’s just us.’”
Custer’s Last Stand?
Pride Comes Before the Fall
Custer’s troops went into battle with the pomp and parade of war that distinguished them around their camps.
But what he could see was enough to fire the blood of a man like Custer. Huge clouds of dust, nervous horses, frantic horsemen making a run for it, and down along the village, lively turmoil an confusion.
The warriors were by no means running from the fight, the brave warriors were making ready for battle!
The Indians correctly sensed his hesitation, fear, and indecision. He lost the element of surprise, he lost his momentum, and he lost the confidence of his own troops. He emboldened his enemy; “The White Chief was scared”
Military discipline and order were abandoned . . .
an inexcusable panic, due mainly to the incompetent conduct of a cowardly commander.
The question remained, what had happened to George Custer and his men?
Never comprehending the overwhelming odds against him . . .
Custer had sealed his fate.
Custer never saw the complete magnitude of the Indian Camp.
It is likely that this is the point that Custer realized that he was in trouble, and that he must cut his way out and escape the overwhelming enemy surrounding him.
Custer and his command was fully hemmed in, cut off, and losing men quickly. Custer must have realized that at this point retreat was impossible . . .
the last stand. They undoubtedly fought fiercely, but lost their lives to the superior numbers, and superior leadership and strategy . . .
feel free to make your own associations.
