The continuing misfortune of Andy Marte
Andy just has not been getting the breaks this year. First, he hasn't gotten much playing time (documented all over this site). Then he happened to be the first hitter up Thursday after Casilla was hit for the Twins, and paid the price for Ron Gardenhire's bad-loser hissy-fit reaction (which should earn Gardenhire a one-game suspension if MLB is consistent with their rulings).
Then there's this. In thinking through the makeup of the lineup with Victor, I came to the conclusion that Marte should play every day against lefties, as Gutz and BenFran would play in the OF, Garko would DH, and Blake would play 1B. The only way he would sit is if Velandia, Choo, or Dellucci played ahead of him (hold comments, please). Then I looked at the schedule...
First off, the Padres...who throw three righties in a row this weekend. Oh well, how about next week? Interleague play on the road! No DH!! Garko stays at 1B, Blake stays at 3B, and Marte stays you-know-where.
OK, what about when they return home on 6/24? What's that? Oh, Hafner is probably going to be back on that date. He'll DH, Garko stays at 1B, Blake stays at 3B, and Marte stays you-know-where.
This guy can't buy a break! And yes, I wanted to ensure the words Andy Marte appeared in the subject line of another fanpost!

I think that Marte….
-hasn’t been given a chance.
-has already proven that he can’t hit.
-has been slowed by injuries the last two years.
-misses Craig Breslow.
-is a plus fielder.
-tends to boot balls in the field.
-has never hit a ball to the opposite field.
-only hits fly balls.
-has a bad attitude.
-is the next Brandon Phillips.
-only has a job because of Brandon Phillips.
-has a bad swing plane.
-was Manny Ramirez at age 20.
-is better than Blake.
-might be worse than Blake.
-will be our starter in 2009.
-is hated by Wedge.
-is secretly loved, too much so, by Wedge.
I think that about covers it. See, I’ve been reading.

These could just be numbered to expedite future discussions. Think of the time saved:
(6), but some say (4). I know it”s really (18).
Just to save people time, 18 is the last one listed.

It’s funny how the internet changes your perspective as a fan. In the past, I would have been perfectly fine with Andy Marte rotting on the bench all season long. Young guy for the Tribe who struggles and can never find his rythym. Not a new story for this franchise.
But now, I just want the guy to play so I can quit reading about him. So instead of me yearning for his playtime for enjoyment while watching a game … it’s turned into yearning for his playtime so I can enjoy the internet again.
too bad he isn’t wrapped in a #1 jersey. that would get him on the field

I googled “Andy Marte” and it returned zero results.
Let's Go 2009!

That’s crazy. It’s crazy that this stuff keeps happening to Marte and it’s crazy that you had enough foresight to figure this out.
Maybe Shaps should just . . . gasp . . . trade Blake and end the debate. Someone out there must have use for a full-range utility guy on our tab. It’s not like he’s back next year.
Wanna see Wedgie go Weaver?
On our tab, like, we’d have to pay his salary? I don’t think they’re that eager to throw away Blake. Besides, I think we could get an ok return in a Blake trade. The pitch: “He has postseason experience. He hits in the clutch. He plays everywhere. He’s great in the clubhouse. He’s gritty. Look at the beard. So handsome.”
And one more – who the hell is hitting better than Casey Blake right now? Without his bat in the line-up we’d look pretty god-awful.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
‘we would look god-afwul’? We do look god-awful!
though there is no question that Blake has been very productive in June, even if he butchered a few in the field last night.
And this suggestion was, of course, based hypothetically on us falling farther behind in the division and trading off our desirable pieces.
we could certainly get something for him, but his price tag is rather high . . . I honestly don’t know if we might be paying at least part of that salary.
