Yea..not sure why Carroll wasn’t running on the chopper. Even if Maddux dives, is he really going to throw you out?
yet hamilton felt that he would’ve been dead at the plate if maddux fields the ball …
oddly, here i defer to manning, former baserunning coach.
Wow. Hamilton just informed me that runners are 24 of 26 against Michael Barrett.
And f off, Francisco. arrrgh.
The skills were there in Cleveland. He was on pace for 444 ABs and 60 walks. He’s not lost at the plate. But he was chasing high fastballs all day long, not reacting to ball inside, and pulling (or trying to) everything.
I’m still really excited about him, and his play in Buffalo is reassuring.
I agree with all of that. But is there really this much of a difference between Buffalo and Cleveland, in either competition or environment? He’s gone from pretty abjectly horrible to, uhhh, Albert Belle.
He’s had 20 at-bats, has no walks, and five strikeouts. I’m glad he’s hitting, but that’s not gonna do it. And it’s just a few ABs. Can’t really tell anything from it.
And to answer your question about the difference between Cleveland and Buffalo, I defer to Yogi: “Ninety percent of this game is mental, and the other half is physical.”
what the hell, they just showed Francisco running, he looked back after hitting second and then started running to third.
I was more impressed that Garko rediscovered his high popup swing.

C’mon. He used to be awesome. Now he’s just bizarre. I get that he likes pitching but what a weird anomaly he’s become-on like a 75 pitch count and giving up pretty many hard hit balls.
Enough about Paul Byrd…tell me about Greg Maddux.

Yea…it just deflected off his head and knocked his hat straight.
(Didn’t hit his head. He was fine.)
Texas DFA RHP Robinson Tejeda. Think it’s time to dump Slocum from the 40 and grab an arm for Buffalo’s rotation?
Brignac had a huge year in 2006, but came back to earth last year in AA and hasn’t lit up anything in AAA so far. Granted, he’s only 22. But there’s always been questions about his defense at shortstop.
I know the book on him. I just think it’s a decent buy low opportunity, at a position where we need guys. If we could convert him to 2B, I think there’s potential value there.
I can’t imagine the Rays are all that interested in him. But maybe I’m wrong.
They aren’t going to live with Barlett or Ben Zobrist at SS for very long. I think Brignac, for now, is their man.
Just woke up and got here, I’m taking credit for that!!1

To save you the trouble, he’s at 14 including today.

Crazy thing to me is that it’s been 14 straight days. A quick peek shows that he played on 19 straight days last week, so this isn’t unprecedented.

I want to save a copy of that atbat for display next time someone argues that RBI is a meaningful stat.
He flew out before you get excited, but it was deep.

wow, it really is quiet, I just realized, you probably meant the inning he gave up three runs-
It was a double, couple bloop hits. Key play was grounder to Garko and CC didn’t cover the bag, Garko got beat to first (at least thats how the ump saw it).
So, I have a question, it being Fathers’ Day. Which of the Indians position players have kids? Any of them?
I was listening to the broadcast of the Reds/Cards in the car yesterday and the announcer (don’t remember who it was) was all over one of the Cards for trying to bunt for a hit in a 2-out situation with a runner on base. Said it was selfish and thought the guy was avoiding his responsibility to drive a runner in (and making it the next guy’s problem). Bunting may not be a good idea, but it’s like blaming the guy for trying to work a walk and keeping the inning alive. The Cards won the game, as it happened.
If Choo keeps this up I wouldn’t mind seeing him bat leadoff.

all right, let’s get some help in the bullpen. jeff stevens will be up soon enough, but i think we need just one more arm – it would really help if betancourt could come back to life – and we’re in this thing baby.

ChiSox had the bases loaded with two outs and Crede out but no dice. Back to 5.5 under.
Step 1) Get back to .500
Step 2) the world!
listen people it really is all about the bullpen. and i just have no trust in Masa really. we need Raffy B back, and maybe another bullpen arm and we’re good to go.

Last 6 game stats for select players:
Shoppach: .285 (6-21), 3 HRs, 7 RBIs, 10 SOs
todays game really hurt shoppach, dropping his average from .352 to .285 with a (0-4).
Carroll: .619 (13-21), 3 RBIs, 2 SOs
Choo: .333 (6-18), 2 2b, 1 hr, 6 RBIs, 4 SOs
Francisco: .375 (9-24), 2 2b, 7 RBIs, 1 hr, 1 SO.
what i make of this: we should probably experiment with carroll and choo for lead off.
NO NO NO. Sizemore is our leadoff hitter. Wedge attempted moving him last year and it sucked.
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
Well, it only sucked because other guys ahead of him didn’t perform. Sizemore did fine in the 3 hole during that time (OPS .911). He just didn’t have anyone to drive in in front of him (only 4 RBI’s in 8 games .. 2 of those were himself from HR’s).
I just hate seeing Grady lead off games and smack homeruns .. it seems like such a waste.
Its true that they’ve been doing better partly because of Choo and Francisco’s continued success. Carroll has also been a nice surprise. But, let’s be honest. Can the offense rely on two guys who are basically rookies and a career utility player? We’ve won, also, because Sizemore and Peralta have been hitting more, and Garko was doing great until this series. Those are the guys who can make this offense effective.
Carroll’s a lot better player than you imagine. I expect him ot OPS around 750 and play a superior second base. He’s the answer this year for second.
"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay
I don’t disagree. But, he ain’t gonna carry the offense or go 3 for 5 consistently. He’s a good, solid player who won’t hurt you as long as you don’t ask him to do more than get on base and play his position pretty well. My point was that we can’t rely on guys like him, Francisco and Choo to be the offensive leaders—we need Peralta, Garko and Sizemore to play up to expectations, something they’ve started to do a bit more of late.
If this actually materializes, which is questionable, it should help our middle relievers:

I'll regress to my career numbers if you do too!
Tigers playing in San Francisco Monday night. Giants have lost all 6 IL games to the A’s, while the Tigers have won 6 straight and the Indians are the only team to beat them in the last 10 days.
The Tigers were in the Bay Area less than 2 weeks ago when the A’s swept them before the Tigers-Indians series.
Unless the Giants rise up Monday, the Tigers will have tied the Indians for 3rd place. The good news for the Indians is that Lincecum is going up against Verlander. Lincecum went 7 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his last start (Giants losing 1-0 in the 9th), lowering his ERA to 1.99.
