I like how much they are missing the ball so far.

So, do you think there is anything to player’s day-night splits?

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

did you guys know Kevin Kouzmanoff used to be an indian?

by Brick. on Jun 15, 2008 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

so i’m a little late here…what pitch was Sabathia getting so many swings and misses on?

by APV on Jun 15, 2008 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

swings and misses to Adrian Gonzalez:
95 fastball
95 fastball inside corner
84 slurve low and away

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

guess those NL guys aren’t used to seeing a real fastball

by APV on Jun 15, 2008 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he got Kouzmanoff to swing and miss on a changeup I think. everything seemed to work except to Gerut and the first pitch to their # 2 hitter, which was crushed foul.

Hey, last night sucked huh?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

i didn’t see any of the last 5 innings, but i was pretty pissed when I got home… hence my drunken post.

wow, that couldn’t have ended much worse.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Yea..not sure why Carroll wasn’t running on the chopper. Even if Maddux dives, is he really going to throw you out?

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

that’s what Manning said- surprised he wasn’t going on first contact.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

yet hamilton felt that he would’ve been dead at the plate if maddux fields the ball …

oddly, here i defer to manning, former baserunning coach.

by macasson on Jun 15, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

if Hamilton said that, he was flat out wrong. There’s no way either guy would have thrown him out at the plate.

Asdrubal is now OPSing 1076 in Buffalo. Seriously, what’s wrong with the Cleveland clubhouse?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

Wedge wrecked the bathroom. Seriously, you should smell it in there. It’s awful.

by APV on Jun 15, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

The skills were there in Cleveland. He was on pace for 444 ABs and 60 walks. He’s not lost at the plate. But he was chasing high fastballs all day long, not reacting to ball inside, and pulling (or trying to) everything.

I’m still really excited about him, and his play in Buffalo is reassuring.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with all of that. But is there really this much of a difference between Buffalo and Cleveland, in either competition or environment? He’s gone from pretty abjectly horrible to, uhhh, Albert Belle.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

SSS. plus a really big difference in talent. plus a minor hot streak.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s had 20 at-bats, has no walks, and five strikeouts. I’m glad he’s hitting, but that’s not gonna do it. And it’s just a few ABs. Can’t really tell anything from it.

And to answer your question about the difference between Cleveland and Buffalo, I defer to Yogi: “Ninety percent of this game is mental, and the other half is physical.”

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

How’s he supposed to walk?! He’s hitting .444!

Still finding time to strike out…

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

what the hell, they just showed Francisco running, he looked back after hitting second and then started running to third.

CC and Cliff have traded the magic “I’m the best pitcher of all time!’ hat.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

You are dodging bullets, Mr. Maddux.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

He’s made a career out of it. I mean honestly, how does he do it?

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

C’mon. He used to be awesome. Now he’s just bizarre. I get that he likes pitching but what a weird anomaly he’s become-on like a 75 pitch count and giving up pretty many hard hit balls.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Enough about Paul Byrd…tell me about Greg Maddux.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Also, Paul Byrd probably needs the money right?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

75 pitches may carry him 7 or 8 innings at this damn rate

by macasson on Jun 15, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Greg Maddux might be the best right-handed pitcher of his era. He’s better than Clemens, no?

(Didn’t hit his head. He was fine.)

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Mujica’s crooked hat looked stupid after he gave up all those runs. But CC’s still looks awesome.

a delicate caveat

by joeee on Jun 15, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Texas DFA RHP Robinson Tejeda. Think it’s time to dump Slocum from the 40 and grab an arm for Buffalo’s rotation?

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

I am pushing for a Reid Brignac trade. At least in my head.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Brignac had a huge year in 2006, but came back to earth last year in AA and hasn’t lit up anything in AAA so far. Granted, he’s only 22. But there’s always been questions about his defense at shortstop.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I know the book on him. I just think it’s a decent buy low opportunity, at a position where we need guys. If we could convert him to 2B, I think there’s potential value there.

I can’t imagine the Rays are all that interested in him. But maybe I’m wrong.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

They aren’t going to live with Barlett or Ben Zobrist at SS for very long. I think Brignac, for now, is their man.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I had heard they really liked Bartlett. I haven’t watched them much but supposedly his defense has been difference making?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to add Brignac to the Tribe system, though.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Ronny Cedeno.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I’d take that.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Slocum probably wouldn’t be my first choice, but I was also wondering whether the Indians might try to grab Tejeda

by APV on Jun 15, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

so much for good fielding am i right????

by joeee on Jun 15, 2008 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Gutz should be stealing.

by xrickx on Jun 15, 2008 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

How can you throw anyone out when Maddux is delivering the ball to the player at 49 mph?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

Guuuuuuuutz SB.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

How are you gonna let Greg Maddux strike you out, Kelly?

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

C’mon Carroll.

by afh4 on Jun 15, 2008 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Any of the 40 flyouts that have been hit since Ryan Garko’s pop-up would have scored the runner from third base.

Casey’s gotta be getting close to breaking a club record for consecutive games started, no?

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

To save you the trouble, he’s at 14 including today.

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s probably not even a personal record for Casey, this year.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

But, it’s like the NBA. Not who starts, but who finishes is what matters. Marte finished a game a few days ago. He’s the key to the team’s late inning success!!

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Crazy thing to me is that it’s been 14 straight days. A quick peek shows that he played on 19 straight days last week, so this isn’t unprecedented.

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

Yes. Taking 4 pitches (two for strikes) in a Sac Fly situation, then hitting a grounder to the pitcher. Excellent situational hitting.

I think Shoppach is good again. I think.

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

by CU Adam on Jun 15, 2008 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

wow, it really is quiet, I just realized, you probably meant the inning he gave up three runs-
It was a double, couple bloop hits. Key play was grounder to Garko and CC didn’t cover the bag, Garko got beat to first (at least thats how the ump saw it).

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha, yeah. I couldn’t tell if you were being sarcastic or not, but since it’s like a library in here I didn’t want to say anything.

Both Maddux and CC are over 70 pitches through 4 innings. Looks like a rubber match for the battle of the bullpens.

Underpants: “At least we don’t have to play Milwaukee this year and face Russell Branyan”

Branyan would probably go 10-12 with 5 HRs in a series against us.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

So, I have a question, it being Fathers’ Day. Which of the Indians position players have kids? Any of them?

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

by Gradyforpresident on Jun 15, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

I agree. He hasn’t seemed that overwhelming. Good, but not great command.

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I know. That’s what surprised me. Seemed like a lot of deep counts, but he’s been able to get guys to swing and miss when it counted (except for that one inning).

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

except that one bad inning he has been incredibly dominant I think. Although it is really weird the balls that have been hit off him have been hit hard.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

gotta love the “NOUN!” by Maddux as soon as he let go of the pitch that Peralta hit.

come on shoppach draw a walk

by Gradyforpresident on Jun 15, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

I was listening to the broadcast of the Reds/Cards in the car yesterday and the announcer (don’t remember who it was) was all over one of the Cards for trying to bunt for a hit in a 2-out situation with a runner on base. Said it was selfish and thought the guy was avoiding his responsibility to drive a runner in (and making it the next guy’s problem). Bunting may not be a good idea, but it’s like blaming the guy for trying to work a walk and keeping the inning alive. The Cards won the game, as it happened.

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like a Marty Brenneman rant.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Although the Reds/Cards series was this week, yesterday the Reds played the Red Sox.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right. It was the Red Sox. I’m more tired that I realized after that drive!

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It was the Cards/Phillies broadcast (and they were on one of the Phils). I picked up the Red Sox/Reds game after I lost that one. They’ve obviously blurred together in my mind. Sorry.

CC at 105 pitches- how do we handle the last 2 innings, assuming we don’t score any more runs?

by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 15, 2008 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I bet CC comes out to face Gerut, at least. Gerut homered off Perez last night.

Grady going for the AL lead in homers!!

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

If Grady keeps this up it might be time to get him some more RBI opportunities…

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Marte could bat 9th? (tee hee).

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

If Choo keeps this up I wouldn’t mind seeing him bat leadoff.

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what Terry Pluto’s pushing (against righties, anyway).

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, nice. I did not know that, but this Pluto fellow has a point.

by supermarioelia on Jun 15, 2008 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I spend the first 5 minutes of every morning trying to figure out who can bat leadoff besides Grady.

And Grady! of course.

Another fine AB for Casey, the RBI guy. Meanwhile, the Sox have tied Colorado, 3-3.

Nice inning for CC. Who pitches the 9th? (Bauer? Masa?)

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

I’d guess Masa, Betancourt, or Perez. Unless we score 10 runs, then it will be Bauer.

by Matt Y. on Jun 15, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

all right, let’s get some help in the bullpen. jeff stevens will be up soon enough, but i think we need just one more arm – it would really help if betancourt could come back to life – and we’re in this thing baby.

by Gradyforpresident on Jun 15, 2008 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Or Jensen Lewis (he wasn’t good in Buffalo’s game today, though). Asdrubal had two more hits, though (and an error).

Boston, NY for sure; Chicago, Detroit probably; Everyone else would be right around the same.

listen people it really is all about the bullpen. and i just have no trust in Masa really. we need Raffy B back, and maybe another bullpen arm and we’re good to go.

with no game tomorrow, this is my last game stateside until mid-august. here’s hoping for meaningful ball in august and september (and october)!

by macasson on Jun 15, 2008 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Last 6 game stats for select players:

Shoppach: .285 (6-21), 3 HRs, 7 RBIs, 10 SOs
todays game really hurt shoppach, dropping his average from .352 to .285 with a (0-4).

Carroll: .619 (13-21), 3 RBIs, 2 SOs

Choo: .333 (6-18), 2 2b, 1 hr, 6 RBIs, 4 SOs

Francisco: .375 (9-24), 2 2b, 7 RBIs, 1 hr, 1 SO.

what i make of this: we should probably experiment with carroll and choo for lead off.

by wendigo on Jun 15, 2008 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

NO NO NO. Sizemore is our leadoff hitter. Wedge attempted moving him last year and it sucked.

The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.

by westbrook on Jun 15, 2008 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it only sucked because other guys ahead of him didn’t perform. Sizemore did fine in the 3 hole during that time (OPS .911). He just didn’t have anyone to drive in in front of him (only 4 RBI’s in 8 games .. 2 of those were himself from HR’s).

I just hate seeing Grady lead off games and smack homeruns .. it seems like such a waste.

by Brad D on Jun 15, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Its true that they’ve been doing better partly because of Choo and Francisco’s continued success. Carroll has also been a nice surprise. But, let’s be honest. Can the offense rely on two guys who are basically rookies and a career utility player? We’ve won, also, because Sizemore and Peralta have been hitting more, and Garko was doing great until this series. Those are the guys who can make this offense effective.

by peter m on Jun 15, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it sure beats relying on Dellucci and Blake like the team was before the New Indians era.

by Toxicadam on Jun 15, 2008 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Carroll’s a lot better player than you imagine. I expect him ot OPS around 750 and play a superior second base. He’s the answer this year for second.

by mauichuck on Jun 16, 2008 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree. But, he ain’t gonna carry the offense or go 3 for 5 consistently. He’s a good, solid player who won’t hurt you as long as you don’t ask him to do more than get on base and play his position pretty well. My point was that we can’t rely on guys like him, Francisco and Choo to be the offensive leaders—we need Peralta, Garko and Sizemore to play up to expectations, something they’ve started to do a bit more of late.

If this actually materializes, which is questionable, it should help our middle relievers:

Tigers playing in San Francisco Monday night. Giants have lost all 6 IL games to the A’s, while the Tigers have won 6 straight and the Indians are the only team to beat them in the last 10 days.

The Tigers were in the Bay Area less than 2 weeks ago when the A’s swept them before the Tigers-Indians series.

Unless the Giants rise up Monday, the Tigers will have tied the Indians for 3rd place. The good news for the Indians is that Lincecum is going up against Verlander. Lincecum went 7 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his last start (Giants losing 1-0 in the 9th), lowering his ERA to 1.99.
