Choo bats third, Jhonny fourth, Garko fifth. Dellucci, not Ben Fran in left. And, of course, no Marte.

I was thinking about taking them off.

Miserable, couch potato-ish Sunday in Cleveland. Sun gave way to storms gave way to Ohio gray.

Any predictions about Byrd’s outing this afternoon? No way he gets shelled again, right?

i think he gets shelled

This is one of those games that I really don’t have a good feeling about.

by Fundamentals on Jun 22, 2008 4:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he was on a 1 good-1 bad game regimen for awhile. that ended with his last start, which should have been good, but was bad.

I’ll be contrarian. I think he’ll be fine. I get the impression the Dodgers like to put the ball in play pretty early and that helps Byrd, I think.

He’s not that damn bad. He’ll find a way to finish the season with an ERA under 5. And that means he has some good starts coming.

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 4:08 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m thinking because this Dodgers lineup isn’t stellar, Byrd gives up no more than 5 runs. 6 IP should be reached.

my vote for Byrd: no confidence (disclaimer: I have been wrong more times than right in regards to Byrd)

Byrd is your Sowers.

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 4:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Doing some maths here:

Byrd is on pace to pitch 172 Innings in 31 starts, giving up 42 HR! 42!

by jhon on Jun 22, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

42 homers, holy shoot. Isn’t Vic Martinez on pace for that many, too?

I'll regress to my career numbers if you do too!

by Fire Slider on Jun 22, 2008 4:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Something like that. Eric Milton allorwed 42 in ‘04 in 201 IP. I think more Home Runs were hit in that season, and his home field was a bandbox

by jhon on Jun 22, 2008 4:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hopefully the Dodgers take their cuts and hit ‘em “too high”, where he only gives up two or three solo HRs through 6 IP.

i’ve found this match the most boring so far of an otherwise thrilling (and very surprising) set of quarter-final matches. both these teams look slow.

by APV on Jun 22, 2008 4:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well Fabregas is on now. We’ll see if that helps.

You don’t buy my theory that the Indians are getting super aggressive with KDLC?

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 4:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’d be kind of happy if they were…but that doesn’t seem to be their style

by APV on Jun 22, 2008 4:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why wouldn’t they just take the guy from Kinston in that rotation slot and spot start him?

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 4:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

they move people around in strange ways to make spot starts now and then. a few weeks back they had Josh Tomlin, who hasn’t pitched above Kinston and has mainly pitched out of the pen, make a spot start in Buffalo. i assume it just has to do with availability and convenience to some degree

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know this is an inning late, but I just want to say I hate National League baseball. Shoppach gets a double so we have men on 2nd and 3rd with two outs….but the pitcher is up. End of the inning. I hate having an automatic out (CC notwithstanding).

I know people talk about the so-called “strategy” required by the manager in the NL, but I don’t see how pretty much automatically bunting with the pitcher (unless there is two outs) amounts to much strategy. It’s just a black hole in the lineup.

Here’s a quiz for you Adam.

Is there any reason for us to not be more excited about Stephen Head than Trevor Crowe?

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 5:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Head actually was highly regarded as a hitter coming out of college. Nice to see him hitting a bit.

by xrickx on Jun 22, 2008 5:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Stephen Head’s a fringe sleeper kind of guy. He’s never put up what you would consider “good” numbers, despite regularly having decent peripheral numbers. At this point he’s kind of old, but maybe he’s finally turning his peripherals into performance. It’d be nice to see more power, though.

by APV on Jun 22, 2008 5:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He’s younger than Crowe.

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 5:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by xrickx on Jun 22, 2008 5:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But let’s hope.

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 5:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kouzmanoff’s “rise” was mostly batting average related with a Marcus Thames spurt of power that has since gone away.

by xrickx on Jun 22, 2008 5:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he hasn’t been terrible in San Diego. In a pitcher friendly park he’s put up an ISO right around .180, which isn’t terrible. I don’t think anyone thought he’d maintain his ridiculous .650 SLG% from 2006

by APV on Jun 22, 2008 5:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He has “tools,” but he was even considered a stretch to be drafted as high as he was by the Indians. He’s not playing CF. He’s not stealing many bases. He’s still drawing walks. Maybe he’ll carve out a career as a 4th outfielder. Probably fits in the NL.

by afh4 on Jun 22, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shoppach did the right thing by swinging at the 3-1. I think the 3-2 was a strike. It’s a tough spot in which to hit, ‘cause Shoppach, not a contact hitter, has to expand his zone knowing the pitcher is next.
