MLBTRADERUMORS DID NOTHING WRONG

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

...prompting talk that they might be buyers this summer. C.C. Sabathia’s name has been connected with the A’s, in part because he’s a Bay Area native, and the A’s certainly have the young talent to make such a deal.

and then completely contradicts itself:

But if the A’s get involved in a Sabathia deal, it likely would be as the “hinge” team in a three-team deal. The A’s are not interested in a high-priced rental.

You know Selig? Ombudsman.

So there’s no link and no specifics. And this is a site called Trade Talk.

SF Chronicle attributes it to Ken Rosenthal (Fox)

by palcal on Jun 24, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course, the site didn’t attribute it to anybody.

From SF Chronicle:

Buy or sell?: Ken Rosenthal, a senior writer at Fox Sports, suggested in his Sunday “Full Count” piece that the A’s could be in the market for a big-name power bat and could even get into the sweepstakes for Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia, a Vallejo native. “For all of the talk about Billy Beane trading Rich Harden, it’s quite possible that the A’s could become a buyer,” Rosenthal said. “Their biggest need is a right-handed hitting corner outfielder, and Matt Holliday of the Rockies would be the perfect fit if that team fell out of contention. Another guy to watch is the Pirates’ Jason Bay.” Left-hander Sabathia, 19-7 last season, is being linked to just about every team in contention. He is 5-8 with a 4.06 ERA this season. “Don’t be surprised if Beane interjects himself into the Sabathia discussions with the goal of swinging a three-way deal,” Rosenthal said. “He loves to get in the middle of blockbusters, and he’s got the prospects to acquire Sabathia.”

It’s hard to imagine Billy Beane having a favorable impression of CC after watching his team continually bash the guy for the past 4 years.

by Toxicadam on Jun 25, 2008 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s also hard to imagine Beane caring about team-vs.-team splits.

by Voltaire on Jun 25, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

but he should care about pitcher-in-certain-stadium splits, shouldn’t he?

by JulioBernazard on Jun 26, 2008 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Not when those splits are a tiny sample size.

Oakland has a pitcher’s park and they generally have a great defense. Sabathia would be even better with the As than he has been with the Indians.

I’m with Peter on this one.

by Jay on Jun 27, 2008 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He would also calm down after three or four starts there. Habituation.

Man, I wish that would work on Mujica!!

by peter m on Jun 27, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

For what it’s worth: The above item was linked from mlb.com’s trade deadline page.

by odradek on Jun 24, 2008 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, but they were linking to themselves. I don’t see anybody actually reporting anything.

by Ryan on Jun 24, 2008 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Trade Talk did something wrong.

“CC Sabathia’s name has been connected”

Um, connected by whom? Passive attribution flat-out sucks. In this case, the people doing the connecting are the people doing the “reporting.” That means there is nothing to see here.

Has Beane ever watched him pitch in OAK?
