I hate it when this team scores in the first inning, it generally means we never score again

by Chief Wahoo on Jun 24, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

sooo…maybe it’s a little late to be asking this question, but were there any rule changes in MLB this past offseason that would make us feel like this team is good? b/c using traditional metrics, i’m not getting that feeling…

by DontCallMeJoey on Jun 24, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

the marte rule: a team may only score in one inning per game.

Shoppach was playing catch with Grady.

by gte619n on Jun 24, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Winn stole second, Shoppach took the bait and threw it down, and it bounced into CF.

by xrickx on Jun 24, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Here’s my question. Raffy literally spent at least 10 seconds in the set position there. How did Winn still get that kind of jump?

I Had A Dove
By John Keats

I had a dove and the sweet dove died;
And I have thought it died of grieving:
O, what could it grieve for? Its feet were tied,
With a silken thread of my own hand’s weaving;
Sweet little red feet! why should you die -
Why should you leave me, sweet bird! why?
You liv’d alone in the forest-tree,
Why, pretty thing! would you not live with me?
I kiss’d you oft and gave you white peas;
Why not live sweetly, as in the green trees?

Published posthumously.

Wedge is unbelievable in his steadfastness. This offense completely sucks balls, but he still insists on shattering Marte’s confidence by pinch hitting for him in every late inning situation and not pinch hitting for anyone else

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Oh c’mon. Blake is our best hitter. Seriously.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

And our worst fielder.

by supermarioelia on Jun 24, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

So what? Get the tying run, at least, before you play for defense.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I’m not arguing that we should’ve left Andy in there. Especially with how Casey has been hitting lefties over the past few weeks. But the whole way this has played out has just stunk.

by supermarioelia on Jun 24, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

What percentage of Marte’s games started has he been pinch hit for though, because it feels like 75-80%

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Too many, no question.

But we have to win now or else blow this thing up. And that means actually trying to get the lead. And that means Blake batting.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

which speaks to an ENTIRE host of its own issues…but you’re right. maybe i want grady at the plate more than blake…maybe

by DontCallMeJoey on Jun 24, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And why couldn’t Blake pinch hit earlier in the same situation for Wedge’s precious, Carroll?

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Look, I am a huge Marte proponent but Carroll is probably our third best hitter right now.

I’m sorry but when all the hitters have gone to shit this is about the only way to look at things.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

My only point is that there will always be an excuse to remove Marte from the game. We need to let him play through it

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

If he doesn’t play every game after July 10, come talk to me. But, as far as Wedge is concerned, this team is in the playoffs right now.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess as manager he has to play that way, it’s just going to be one of those situations where Marte needs a change of scenery I fear

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

After July 10 this is all going to less melodramatic and painful. I hope.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That too is my hope, and I will probably calm down, but there is a big part of me that doubts it

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly the only way Andy is going to prove anything this year is when we officially go into sell-mode. No chance it happens otherwise.

I’m in agreement here

Burn on, big river, burn on...

by Turkmenbashi on Jun 24, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The issue is that despite being on the roster all season, come June 24th, Andy Marte has 50-at bats.

by xrickx on Jun 24, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not defending previous actions. Just the current one.

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

It was right for Wedge to hit Blake. The Indians need to try and win. But Wedge himself has not allowed for the circumstances to arise in which Marte presents just as good a chance as Blake to win, which, believe it or not, is not that good of a chance.

by xrickx on Jun 24, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I get that. Have I said anything that indicates I don’t understand that, ever?

by afh4 on Jun 24, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Not you. Just summing up others’ frustration that has somehow clouded them into thinking that Marte should have hit.

I am an advocate of trading Mastny while he’s hot in Buffalo

by Roger Dorn on Jun 24, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Mastny has actually had his moments – there was a stretch when he closed when he was effective and he pitched well in the playoffs last year. His last “trial” with the Indians wasn’t fair - he got put into a role he hadn’t been in all year and did predictably badly, then got sent down. I’ve been impressed, actually, by how he’s responded - he’s pitched very well since then. Maybe Roger Dorn is right and we should trade him while he’s “up,” but maybe he deserves a sustained shot—not just one or two sporadic appearances, but a chance to pitch regularly and show what he can or can’t do. It’s not like Masa or Betancourt have been models of reliability and consistency. What have we got to lose?
