Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox, Jun 30, 2008 8:11 PM EDT
Cleveland at Chicago, 8:11 PM (STO)
The Indians' prospects are such that losing this series probably means the season is over. Baseball Prospectus's Adjusted Standings say that the Indians are a better team than their 37-45 record indicates, but leaving Chicago down 10 or more games with four teams ahead of them is a deficit no amount of true talent can overcome. Not with two-fifth of the rotation and two of their top three hitters on the DL.
So as pathetic as it may sound, this series is the first round of the playoffs for the Indians. If they win, they'll keep Sabathia and move on to Minnesota. Lose, and any or all of their pending free agents won't be around for long.

Those of us rooting for the Indians to get swept in this series in order to remove all doubt and commence the psuedo-fire sale, check in here.
A 1-2 showing would do the job. I don’t ever want to get swept.
I’m hoping we either go 1-2, or deliver an emphatic sweep of our own. Nothing in between.
I google-image searched “futility.”
The original caption read, “They say just one person can make a big difference. Sometimes they’re wrong.” I thought it was better just on it’s own.

Since the revelation Casey’s been pretty good. Well, his bat at least. I really thought he’d collapsed. I have to admit I was wrong and give Casey some credit. We should get a decent prospect in exchange for him. Not gonna lie, I’ll be a little sad when he goes.
I’ve been wrong before about Casey, but I really hope we don’t.
Shouldn’t we-you know-rebuild things just a little?
I hadn’t even considered this. What makes you think this?
If they do this, then there really is no point to having Marte here. And this would trash the narrative I built around the Ensberg signing.
How about 2 out of 3? I’d rather CC win with a CG SHO to boost his stock further.
Actually, just one out of 3. I’d like Lee to do the same, so that he starts the all-star game.
LeCavs!
If you were good enough, maybe we'd name it after you.
As much as I’d love a fire sale, I can’t help but hang onto one last glimmer of hope. So much so that I’ve been pumped for tonight’s game all day long. Like Ryan said above, the playoffs begin tonight. In June.
LET’S GO TRIBE!!!
I’m currently watching the Cleveland Gladiators AFL playoff game. Playoff football in Cleveland, how about that?
Kosar is the part owner and GM of the Gladiators. I’ve gone to a couple of games, they’re actually pretty entertaining to watch.

Interesting.
Could be true.
Could there be a bad infielder who’s such a thoroughly horrible hitter to negate the difference in defensive value?
plus, he is responsible for the mississippi flooding, so there’s that, too. really detracts from any semblance of value he may have had…

Worst case scenario is we sweep Chicago, but make up no ground on the Twins or the Tigers providing an allusion of contention, yet going no where. I bet Shapiro has one eye on his red trade deadline phone and the other on whatever magic number the team is hovering around in the standings.
Unfortunately, my computer and tv are in two separate rooms, so no gamethread for me today.

The title is Veeck – as in Wreck. It’ll definitely be at your local library, if you don’t want to buy it.
Oh I’ve seen that one. Always passed it up. But I know the Gaedel story, and the pennant burial and all that. Still worth the read?
Steel Nick
Veeck as in Wreck is an absolutely fantastic book. Can’t recommend it highly enough. The great thing about it is—given that it’s Bill Veeck writing it, you really can’t be sure if any of it is true. But that makes it that much more awesome.
What are your other favorite baseball books, Ryan? For me, it’s Ball Four, The Glory of Their Times, and the NBJBA.
The Glory of Their Times is probably my favorite baseball book. I like The Pitch that Killed, too.
I’m ashamed to say this, but I’ve never gotten around to reading the Abstract.
I’m heading out on a long cross country trip tomorrow and I downloaded The Glory of Their Times. The audio book features the original tapes of the players, all now deceased. I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve had it in mind for some time, ever since I heard that the original interviews were on the audio versions.
I remember that from the print edition, years ago.
Bob Costas told a great story, on a telecast or maybe on the old Coast-to-Coast radio show. Fred Snodgrass had an excellent major league career, returned to his hometown in California, started a business, raised a family, became a pillar of the community, served a couple of terms as mayor, died at an old age surrounded by children and grandchildren. An ideal life.
And every paper in the country ran the same obit: Fred Snodgrass, Dropped Fly Ball in 1912 World Series.
nice opening line on that wiki entry…

Speaking of Tampa Bay, I saw a TB local paper (no link) ref that they were looking at CC. I started wondering about returns. Reid Brignac is one guy that interests me, but that’s not enuf.
I kinda like Edwin Jackson as part of a deal. Still very young, strong live arm, getting better every year and could go into the rotation next year. Any thoughts on former uber-prospect E-Jack?
He’s on my AL only fantasy team. Sip.
We should have offered them Adam Miller for Longoria a year and a half ago.
Steel Nick
As far as I can tell, the local press is pretty ambivalent about him – too inconsistent. But considering his age, and the fact that we’d have a hole in the rotation if Byrd and CC both leave, I think he could slot right in with room to improve. Just me, maybe, but there’s not too many young ML starters we could get in a CC package.
Edwin Jackson = Jason Davis.
I did a Google image search for "Andy Marte." It turned up zero results.
While that’s kind of true, Jackson feels like he’s been a tease for years now.
I did a Google image search for "Andy Marte." It turned up zero results.
No way I’d want Jackson to be anything more than a secondary piece. The guy has stuff, but zero control.
But its improving year by year. That’s my point – he has pretty low value, still young with a good ceiling if he can harness his stuff.
Too upstream by now…
He has upside, but like I said, I wouldn’t build a trade around him. If you’re going to trade CC, you better hit a home run.
in a completely unscientific way, Brignac sounds like a future bust to me. I mean, what kind of a baseball name is Reid Brignac?

Man, I am really, really going to miss CC when he is gone. Whatever team he goes to will probably become my favorite team for the rest of the season. (unless it’s the yankees or red sox but I doubt that will happen)
The more I think about it, the more upset I get. I really can’t even conceive of the Indians without him.

GO TO MICHIGAN
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
Today’s report from the netherworlds of an old Tribe forum: “We shouldn’t trade C.C.! We should trade Byrd for Ben Sheets.”
you know, I have been avoiding the game threads, this is the first I’ve read in a while. I’m kinda glad.. this faux-rooting-for-a-loss is depressing. I can’t do it. Go Tribe. Win this game, even if it doesn’t mean anything. A win is always better than a loss. Even if its the 160th game in a 100 loss season.
When it’s the 160th game in a 100-loss season, I’ll be rooting for wins.
For now, I’m rooting for clarity, and for strong performances from guys in their walk years.
Actually you’re rooting for a loss.
Agree with this.
I’m rooting for us to lose the first two games. The third game, with C.C. or without, I’ll be rooting for a win.
I need this team to realize that it’s time to trade CC. To me, treading water doesn’t send that message.
Steel Nick
Reading between the lines of that story out of NJ the other day, it seems that the injuries to Westbrook and possibly Miller are what have the front-office pushing to extend C.C. But it’s not going to happen, and they should realize that.
How do you know??? I would be no less shocked if they signed CC to an extension tomorrow than if they traded him. We really have very little actual information, just, speculation.

So you’re saying that you’d be potentially rooting for the loss of the forest as long as a tree gets saved?
You know the tree goes with the forest, right?
Steel Nick
Yes, I do and I know. I cannot root against the Cleveland Indians. It’s irrational. I’m a fan. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Go Tribe.
I don’t see it as rooting against the Cleveland Indians. I’m way more involved in this team than you are the way I see it. Every good general knows he could lose his men if he doesn’t retreat.
Forests. Battles. Analogies.
Steel Nick

The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
I don’t think it’s a commentary at how involved I am with this team at all. I know full well it makes sense that a loss tonight gets the clarity and the C. C. trade we need. I understand and follow that line of thinking. But I cannot make the final step: rooting against the Tribe for 9 innings. After the game I’m able to say “okay, the loss was actually good, ‘cause this lets us do XYZ.” But not during those nine innings.
It’s stupid, but I don’t mind.
We’re not thinking that differently. I’m not over here lustily rooting for the Tribe. It’s more like, knowing the loss is better than the win, I’m just here really annoyed and pissed for three hours.
this is the fallacy. A win now cannot hurt the future. Unless you really think it will paralyze Shapiro’s ability to make a groundbreaking David Dellucci for Max Ramirez’s brother or something.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 30, 2008 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I couldn’t care less what Shapiro decides to do with Dellucci. Sunk cost or PTBNL.
I care what he does with CC, and he has something like six starts between now and the trade deadline. That could potentially be a dealbreaker.
Steel Nick
Are we really talking about our own clarity or Shaprio’s? I have faith that Shapiro doesn’t need a win or loss today or even in this series to determine how to move forward with CC… do you?
by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 30, 2008 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Sort of. If we get to 5.5 back after this stretch of games, I think Shapiro’s hand freezes above the button. And realistically, I don’t think this team is anywhere near good enough to actually do anything.
Steel Nick
precisely. If we get back to 5.5 back and playing somehow way better and the news looks good on some combination of our DL guys and we can add another piece, and Shaprio wants to go for it, he will. Otherwise, I don’t think he freezes or gets caught in the middle.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 30, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Let me put it to you this way.
The earlier we totally tank, the earlier he pulls the trigger, and the earlier he pulls the trigger, the more valuable C.C. is to his new team, and the more valuable C.C. is to his new team, the more we get in return.
CLARITY NOW.
by Jay on Jun 30, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Maybe, but this is tempered by the fact that there is less of a market for CC now than there will be in a month. Our picture will be more clear, and so will everyone else’s. Teams will be more likely to go for it then. I don’t think CC’s trade value changes too much between now and July 31.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 30, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Totally untrue.
There is, right now, a huge market for C.C.
There are, right now, at least as many teams that think they’re in it as there will be in a month and probably more.
And every one of those teams would pay a nice little chunk more to acquire C.C. on July 1 than July 31.
In some cases, a team may even consider trading for C.C. now just in case they can make a run, then flipping him on July 31 if things go horribly wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time — and there’s no reason we should mind that possibility. Once we get paid, it’s all good.
I agree totally with your last paragraph. But there are also teams that are waiting to see if they are still going to be in it or if they will be able to stay in it, closer to the deadline before they give us 2-3 good prospects.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jun 30, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Trust me, it adds up better to trade him now.
There’s already probably ten teams that unequivocally want him. You’ve got to let those ten teams bid on him for 18 starts, rather than waiting to let 12 teams bid on him for 12 starts.
I probably won’t trust you, but that’s just a pet peeve.
You are right that it is better to have a guy for 18 starts vs. 12 starts. You are also right that more teams might consider themselves in the race now than in a month. I think this is discounted by the fact that teams are less willing to give up their prospects unless they are pretty sure they will be able to make a run, especially if the team is only getting CC for 08 and he will walk at the end of the year.
Even discounting my last point, I just don’t think there is that big of difference. Would we get one extra low level prospect now vs. at the end of the month? Would we get a A+ prospect instead of a A prospect? I don’t think so, the packages will look pretty similar. And if they don’t get to a certain level, CC won’t get traded.
yup, that’s what makes us fans. Leave the search for clarity to the front office. We can speculate all we want, but we are fans first and analysts second.

It’s mostly about the big picture for me, and then a bunch of small picture moments (like a 4-hit game for the Jhonny).
I prefer it when we win, but there’s a bright side to every loss.
Even with Jhonny, part of me is hoping he’ll get traded on the strength of a night like tonight.
I’m a longtime Jhonny fan, it’s just hard not to feel like we really need to change the composition of this team, and ill-fitting pieces always feel like the place to start.

A request for a stick measurement shall be limited to one request per team during the course of any stoppage in play. When a formal complaint is made by the Captain or Alternate Captain of a team, against the dimensions of any stick of an opponent, that opponent must be on the ice at the time the request is made to the Referee. Once the request is made, and as long as the Officials maintain visual contact with the stick, it can be measured. This means that if the player whose stick is about to be measured steps off the ice onto his players’ bench, his stick may still be measured provided the request was received prior to him leaving the ice surface and the stick remains in the view of at least one of the on-ice Officials.
The Referee shall take the stick to the penalty bench where the necessary measurement shall be made immediately. Players on both teams shall retire to their respective benches. To measure the curvature of the blade of the stick, the Referee must draw an imaginary line along the outside of the shaft to the bottom of the blade and then along the bottom of the blade – this will determine the location of the heel. Using a League-approved measuring gauge, the Referee shall secure the gauge at the heel of the stick and measure the curvature of the blade from the heel to any point along the toe of the blade. To measure any other dimension of the stick, the Referee shall use a measuring tape.
The result shall be reported to the Penalty Timekeeper, who shall record it on the back of the Penalty Record form. The Referee will convey the result of the measurement to Captain or Alternate Captain of the player whose stick was measured. If the stick proves to be illegal, the stick shall remain at the penalty bench until the end of the game.
A player whose stick has been measured and it is found not to conform to the provisions of this rule shall be assessed a minor penalty and a fine of two hundred dollars ($200). For a second offense in the same season, the player shall (in addition to the minor penalty) be fined one thousand dollars ($1000). For a third offense in the same season, the player shall (in addition to the minor penalty) be assessed a game misconduct and an automatic one game suspension. For all additional violations in the same season, the automatic suspension to the player shall (in addition to the minor penalty and game misconduct assessed during the game) double for each subsequent violation of this rule (i.e. first suspension – one game, second suspension – two games, third suspension – four games etc.)
If the complaint is not sustained, a bench minor penalty shall be imposed against the complaining Club in addition to a fine of one hundred dollars ($100).
I thought the meaning you read into it was much more sophisticated than ol Ginny Jay could have come up with.

Looking at the Sportsline box score, Gutz is our only bench player tonight (out of five) with either a HR or RBI.
one of these days i’m going to wake-up and there’s going to be a press conference scheduled.
