Heading to Detroit this weekend - any bar/restaurant suggestions?
Hey all. As the title says, some friends and I are heading up to Detroit this weekend for the Indians - Tigers series. We are staying at the downtown Marriott and were hoping to find some suggestions for a few pre-game spots to have a drink (preferably in walking distance to the park), and some post-game spots to grab a bite to eat. Through the wonders of the internet, it appears that "Hockeytown" is a popular destination and is close to the ballpark, but it just seems wrong to me to go to a bar named "Hockeytown" before a baseball game. Our post-game final destination may be the casinos, so any restaurant suggestions in that area would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for the responses.

Haven’t been to Detroit in a couple years, but there is a great pizza place close to the Greektown Casino called Pizzapapalis. Excellent pizza, lines can be long to get in, but if you hit it at the right time you may get lucky. Also, there are a few good places to eat within Greektown, so you may not find the need to leave.
I’ll throw in another recommendation for Pizzpapalis and the nearby restaurants. You can’t go too wrong by staying in Greektown (and as you can imagine, there are plenty of ways to go wrong in Detroit). A bar Jacoby’s is also near Greektown Casino and has live local music. Depending on the band, it may be a 18+ crowd. Late afternoon early evening, however, it has a nice quaint atmosphere and, if my memory serves me, great beer selection.
Closer to park, I’d go with Detroit Beer Company. Chris Chelios has a bar/restaurant there too.
I hear on occasion wild Canadians will wonder across to Detroit from Windsor and you can legally hunt them as the species is over populated in the region. Catching you own food would be both fresher and more rewarding.
I’m in the Detroit area…but I’m probably going backpacking up North this weekend. I’d recommend Mexicantown to any out of towners, though. Also, the Heidelberg Project is pretty interesting.

I’ll be there on Saturday for the day game and some nighttime debauchery.

As a follow up – a friend of a friend has recommended the Old Shillelagh, and it appears that is where our group is headed before Saturday’s game. They have some pre-game food/drink specials, and a shuttle to Comerica. If anyone is interested, you’ll find 10 Tribe fans there staring around 2:00.
