Wow. In some sort of sick way, that makes me proud to be a native Clevelander.

After pulling over at a highway rest stop, man-cred asks logic if he wanted to sleep in the back seat for a while. “I am tired,” says logic.
“I love to drive stick, anyway,” man-cred replies.

As someone who is constantly reminded by Americans about the horrors of soccer violence in the past…I’m pleased to see that even baseball has had its problems!
What does 10cents work out as these days? Is this is pretty dollar beer night…or even more generous that that?

I think it’s more like $0.45 beer night in current dollars

Thanks man…although I butchered that last sentence, that’s what I get for posting at work.
That’s pretty cheap beer so its incredible they had no conditions on how much people could buy.
Speaking of cheap beer in Ohio, it reminds me of a time a few years ago I drove past a pub/shack on the Ohio/Penn state line on route 20 which has a sign advertising 25cent draft bud. I will go to my grave sad that I never stopped to say I had had a 15p beer…although I’m sure the place would have been mighty interesting.

I would love to listen to that Tait/Score play-by-play.
I had recently read that the mid-May 10 cent beer promotion wasn’t the first one of that year. Anybody know if that’s true? I see they had a couple afterwards with seemingly no incident.

No, they were canceled by the commissioner, read it again.

No, what I’m asking is was there one before in Cleveland? I recently heard there was a 10 cent beer night at the stadium in April with a much lower attendance. According to my source the weather and word-of-mouth were factors in there being more beer fans than Indians fans at the may game. I’m just wondering if anyone knows if this is accurate. You’re right about the commissioner canceling the others though.

My parents took my brother and I to one of the 10 cent beer nights later in the year. Each adult was given tickets/coupons to be able to buy ten cent beer. I think it was two each – I have the tickets somewhere at home with my “collection” of ticket stubs.
I do remember listening to that game and mostly being mad because the Indians were going to win the game – and it was early enough in the season to still have some hope.

Is there TV footage of that game? If so, I’ve never seen it. This is the kind of stuff STO needs to play during their hours upon hours of dead air during the offseason.

The worst rain-delay filler is Tribe Tales with Bob DiBiasio on the radio where he pretends to know the details of a story about a former Indians player that somebody from the marketing department researched an typed for him him to read. The stories are usually superficial and intended to give the listener a good felling about purchasing season ticket packages. There is no 10-cent beer night edition.

oh god d’arcy egan….let me tell you, seeing his show on tv was one thing, but hearing his Sunday morning radio show where they simply talk about “the great outdoors” was distrubing in a much deeper way.

i’m mearly suggesting that a radio show format might not be the best way to experience nor enjoy the stylings of “the outdoors”

I didn’t go to the game that night – hadda work. I was working construction on the second trick down at Ninth and Euclid that night. Back then you could get into the bleachers for a buck – IIRC – so $3.40 would get you into the park and buy you the equivalent of a case of beer. It’s interesting that they talk about under age drinking in this article cuz back then 18 y.o.s could legally drink 3.2% beer and I’m pretty sure that was all they served at the stadium.
Anyway, all of the boyz on the job site remarked about how there were no winos on the streets that night – remember we were working right down the street from the Salvation Army Center at Ninth and Bolivar. Seems every drunk in Cleveland was at that game. And oh yeah, Brinkman and the boys usta stop at a place called Schenley’s Bar and Grill nest to the hotel on Ninth and Prospect after almost every game the umped – but not that night if I recall correctly.
We listened to all of the games on the radio on the job back then – BTW Joe Tait is head and shoulders above Tom Hamilton as a baseball announcer – and were struck by how the edge in Tait’s voice kept increasing as the game and the shenanigans went on. With Score you really couldn’t tell – by 1974 Herb was emotionally lobotomized by watching three decades of bad baseball. By the time they called it Joe was down right disgusted but then again just about everything involving the Indians in 1974 disgusted Joe.
At the time it just seemed like a lark – drunks running naked on the diamond didn’t seem any weirder than Leon Lee playing left field.

You know what’s great about that article? Joe Brinkman was one of the umpires and is pictured in one of the photos. In the 1999 divisional series against Boston, Brinkman tossed Doc Gooden in the early part of the game, and the crowd managed to chant “Brinkman sucks” for not only the rest of that game, but also in game 5 of that series.

Perhaps attempting to soothe the riotous beast, the organist then played “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”
Seriously LOL.

A week ago I would have bet my life that It was “nickel beer night”. Or maybe I am thinking of the other promotion the Tribe had, nickel hooker night.

I used to have that in my head, too. I think it just sounds better. And also, twice as cheap/fun.

I didnt read this piece, but atteneded that game with my wife. I bugged out before the violence though. I could tell from the tone of the crowd and the poor behavior that something was brewing. People became less interested in the game and more interested in throwing a beer bash and acting silly.

A tip of the hat to Billy Martin:
“Let’s go get ‘em, boys,” [Martin] said, arming himself with a fungo bat and sprinting toward right-center field.
