David Huff’s pitching tonight for Buffalo. 2 Ks in the 1st inning for Huff (both swinging). Scranton’s manager, who happens to be Alvaro Espinoza, got ejected following the first.
Huff strikes out the side in the 2nd. Two swinging, one looking.

I would like to preemptively request as much commentary as those with radio/tv can give, ‘cause I’m gonna be stuck with only Gameday and this thread tonight.
Someone in the White Sox pre-game just said the White Sox fans “are a special breed.” Can’t argue with that.

HOORAY LINEUP.

to elaborate a little, this is the lineup I feel we should always go with when our “big” guys are out with injuries.

So i´ve been in mexico for a while now, and although i´ve tried to keep up as much as possible, this lineup makes me a bit queasy. I just can´t believe i´m looking at it. Although i do see that i´m using an accent mark for my apostrophe´s. Not sure where those things are . . .and to think when i left i was telling everyone we would be no more than 2 out by the all star break. I feel sick.

I only got to watch the final, and that on replay late Sunday night after accidentally finding out what happened. Great game, though. I’m sort of glad I knew because I would have been really pissed at Germany for the first 70 minutes otherwise, when they seemed disinterested in playing.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Casey Double. We have to hand it to him, he is really doing everything he can for this team, maximizing his trade value here at the end
Ken Williams did well with the Danks trade. Amidst our own struggles, I’ve forgotten why Williams is so widely loathed in the first place. Nevertheless I’m rooting for that Chris Carter guy to become a monster.
Crede is a HOF from both a defensive and offensive standpoint, and to argue would make you a simpleton.
2 on for the Pale Hose. 1 out. Swisher batting.

I have a confession to make guys. At the beginning of the season, I started to grow my “World Series beard”. I stuck it out for a while, but I think it is time for a change. It is too damn hot out for a beard, and the Indians are losing too much. My face is nice and soft now. I am not gonna say I jinxed the season, but today is the first day of the rest of the season.

I think Gutz needs to step into his swing a little more. Looks like he just opens his hips without letting his legs generate any power
It would help if he actually swung at strikes—hard to be effective when you’ve taken two strikes (same for Grady).
WHY WOULD A SCHOOL REFAX AN ORDER FROM MARCH IN AGAIN TODAY AND MAKE ME WASTE TIME REALIZING THIS AND CANCELLING IT?

The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
He’s throwing strike one, strike two. Taking pitches for no particular reason isn’t effective against a guy like that. What they need to do is have an idea—what’s he throwing, where can you hit it. The Indians seem to have a team full of hitters who have no ability to think along with the pitchers they face.
Although, in fairness, some of those outs were hit solidly enough. I’m talking more generally about the Indians’ hitting over the whole year.
An honest question: is a hard hit ball hit right at somebody any better than any other out? Wedge seems to harp on this constantly like it’s a given, but it really doesn’t make complete sense to me

Why, exactly, does Crappey Blake have the green light on 3-0?
by JulioBernazard on Jul 1, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions
All I’m asking for these next two weeks are:
1) No injury to Blake, with him at least treading water. A walkoff homerun or 7-RBI Sportscenter-esque moment would be nice.
2) Byrd to pitch 6 innings and give up 3 runs or less in each of his next two starts.
3) Sabathia to not let the door hit him on the way out.
That sounds like the Indians’ new marketing campaign.

The CHW radio guys said that ShopVac glared at the ump at home at the end of his trot. Is that true?
AJ is 11/ 68 in throwing guys out. They know it. I know it. Everybody knows it. Still, there’s a runner’s advantage and we screwed up.
I’m no expert on balk calls – remember an ump in pony league who got fired for leaning heavily on it – but if you’re on the rubber and step toward home plate, you have to deliver.

oh shit.
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
Sowers after 2006 would have been soooo risky for the FO, but I guess they should have looked at Zack Duke from a year ealier and said, “Yea, that’s probably what’s going to happen” and act accordingly. But that’s hindsight as well.
And I’m not suggesting Sowers won’t be useful. But he’s not Jamie Moyer, and he’s not pitching in Safeco.
The Garza deal was this past offseason. It’s kind of crazy to trade highly advanced pitching prospects.
That’s why the Hamilton / Volquez deal is so odd. I am not sure who won it, but I think I credit the Reds there.
I don’t. Hamilton’s RBI total is insane.
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
he’s so far ahead of everyone else that you can’t look at RBI as worthless in his case.
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
No you can’t. But it’s extremely incidental. There are guys on base when he gets hits. He has nothing to do with that.
Steel Nick
he’s really encouraging in the on-deck circle…
by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 1, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah. I’m definitely going with Volquez, both for this season and in the long run.
Imagine Danks & Volquez in Texas. They screwed up.
I think Hamilton’s going to keep this up, so it’s close… but mostly because of the injury risk in pitchers. Assuming no injuries, it’s not even a contest between Hamilton and Edison.
Justin’s pitch count got outta hand again.
The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
So goes the way of young pitchers. All the more reason to marvel at what Fausto stepped in and did last year.
so, the FO is being extra super careful w/ Fausto at this point, right? i mean, how bad can a hip really be? if we’re in the thick of a division race, isn’t he back already?
by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 1, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe, but this is the kind of non-arm injury Fausto probably benefits from this year by keeping his innings down.
no question. i think it’s a great move…keep his stressful innings down after a really high count last year, let him get his body fully healed before throwing him back out there. i’m just thinking that the only options are a.) extra rest, b.) bo jackson, and i’m hoping like hell for a.)
by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 1, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I watched the 3rd inning, and all of that damage in his PC (the walks and such) must have happened early. He gave up a leadoff “single” to Young (Young bounces it in front of home plate, Posada bounces it past Giambi). With Young moving to second on the E, they pitch around Hamilton on 4 pitches. He then strikes out the next two batters swinging, one of whom was Milton Bradley (having a better year than Hamilton). Then I think the next batter flew out.
A pretty impressive inning from Justin, actually.

She used to be the Customer Service uber-manager. She liked me. It’s actually embarassing how well I knew a lot of those old ladies that work in customer service.
I’ll look for her tomorrow.
So I take it you’ll understand what it means when I say the entire computer system broke on June 30th and didn’t get fixed until July 1 at noon?
Yes I do. I remember when the computer system would break, it was awesome. Is it still some crappy old DOS system?
Oh no, we’ve “upgraded” to Oracle! You have no idea how much it sucks. The full-time employees tell me this.
When I worked there it was an old code based DOS system, which are generally unbreakable, and it would crash weekly. I imagine the Oracle system probably crashes a lot more often but remembering how bad the old one was, it probably is better, as impossible as that may seem.
i’d accept that duel. while we’re talking duel, perhaps this would be the appropriate place to mention that i took an immense amount of pride in the fact that led the numbers almost every week i was there my second and third years.

The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.
i just feel like he gave cleveland a lot of great years and a lot of excitement. if the tribe had met the phils, or come close, he’s still wearing chief wahoo. seems to be an unfair boo…and cheapens the quality years/relationship w/ fans he had in c-town.
and if they didn’t boo him…my life would be exactly no different…
by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 1, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Let’s look at his stated reasons:
1) I want to get back to the playoffs. Well, the Indians made it back to the playoff before Jim Thome did.
2) What am I going to tell my newborn daughter after f years in Cleveland (when Cleveland wouldn’t guarantee him a sixth season) when I have to move her right before she starts school? Well, Jim, the same thing you told her after three years in Philly and three years in CHI.
my point…if he would have just said “It’s an extra year and more money” those of us that know he left as a free agent and wasn’t traded (you’d be surprised how many “fans” think the latter) would at least be able to respect him for being honest.
Oooooo time for another co-worker story! He told me: “If you could get back any two players the Indians traded away, who would they be? For me, they’d be Manny and Thome.”
I made sure to stare at him silently for ten seconds, then say “neither of them were traded.”
the “fans thinking he was traded” doesn’t jive with the boo’ing, to my mind. but that’s neither here nor there, really.
i hear you on the honesty thing, but i think people who pay attention were able to read the tea leaves on jimbo’s reasoning. i certainly can’t fault him for leaving for more dough and what he thought was a better shot at the playoffs. not really his fault that the phils didn’t work out on the field.

It’s all a part of this fscking Wedge-logic. You know, the kind where Blake starts everyday while Marte rots on the bench…where Jhonny plays SS despite having the range of my grandmother (who’s dead)...running JoBlow out there when he couldn’t strike out that same grandmother.
I’d rant more but my puter is flaking out.
The Indians must lead the league in runs scored with two outs (wild exaggeration, I’m sure).
I was thinking in the tenth inning that even Ambiorix was known to have thrown a one-two-three inning every so often. Every month or so. But not Joe, apparently.
Think how much more this would have hurt if the Tribe was within four games of the Sox in September. This wasn’t as bad as the grand slam to Torii Hunter, I don’t think.
Besides, if a blind squirrel finds an acorn on occasion, maybe Franklin could get a two-out hit against a righthander with runners in scoring position. I’ve heard it is possible.
I think it’s also high time for First Merit Bank to make some new radio commercials. Like, tomorrow.
