I’m listening to Akron again tonight, sounds like LaPorta just made a nice play in the field, missed what he did in his first AB

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.
I support the notion, but the fact remains that you can’t pull EVERYTHING and expect to have a decent BABIP. Some balls can’t be hit hard AND pulled on a consistent basis. Grady is only a pull hitter, but he has the benefit to being fast and facing a majority of right-handed pitching, pitching that he destroys. Marte’s going to have to learn to hit right-handed pitching, and that will require him using RF on occasion, something he’s shown no ability to do thus fat.
a player who hit like carroll at home and blake on the road would have aood shot at mvp

On PTI today they mentioned the Indians’ 10-game losing streak and asked what it would take to stop them. LeBatard said playing someone worse than them—that might take a while.

Travis Hafner met with the media before today’s game. He told us his right shoulder is at 50 percent the strength of his left. He’s been on DL since May 30, and progress has been slow as can be. He hopes to be in a position to begin swinging the bat in a couple weeks, which would lead to a rehab, which would lead to his return. But that return is obviously still a ways off.
just fuck it.
No need to rush. Just looking at Jason Giambi, I think that Hafner, even after some injuries and what not, can still put together some decent seasons. That’s just not going to happen if they Mark Prior him into alternating weeks of return/injury/rehab. To this point, there’s been no sign of him being rushed. Fingers crossed.
injuries? that’s not what happened to Giambi.
He had to adjust to playing with only his natural strength.

bc Dellucci shouldn’t be done being useful against RHP. with a mini-hot streak, some team might decide they like him for the bench. and honestly, the four million he’s owed next season isn’t that much.
Andy Marte could have saved our season months ago if he had regular playing time.

Random thought, for all of the guys that are putting up half-decent numbers in Akron, do none of them warrant a call up to Buffalo? Like we’re still giving Jason Tyner atbats?
Yeah I heard the same. Like is 3/4 of the Akron team putting up solid numbers or is it just me? Meanwhile in Buffalo it’s the Abacab show and then nothing.

i’m no scout, but there is at least an Average baseball player in marte watching him. and he’s still so young.
Rob Neyer wrote a blog entry on Andy today. His gist: Wes Hodges is having a nice year in Akron. Andy Marte blew through AA FOUR years ago. Brandon Phillips just needed another chance. Marte doing the same thing is unlikely, but it’s worth a shot.
If the second half season sees the return of Garko and the emergence of Marte .. it might just be all worth it.
So, when does Perez get a shot at the 9th inning? He’s the one guy they haven’t tried in that role (from the erstwhile circle of trust, that is.).
I think it’s a waste to use him “only” in save situations, but that’s that same argument that’s been flying around for the last few years.
In more good news, Chuck Lofgren came back yesterday from the inactive list and threw three scoreless innings.
I think the Indians want Betancourt to show a few decent innings. I don’t think they’d be opposed to dealing him for the right return.
And Raffy P has given up five? Why does it feel like fewer? Or am I nuts?

Hah .. I’ve picked up Bonine and Sonnanstine in consecutive nights for fantasy. What a dunce, I am. Maybe I should keep it up .. it’s giving our hitters good luck.
This begs for the stock response—SSS. But, I will punt. I like Marte and am very happy he’s playing (well).
Pointing out SSS is not a sophisticated response.
It’s understood that the sample size is tiny; it goes without saying.
So, then why is Marte’s July OPS interesting? No big deal, really. I do hope Marte keeps it up and actually think he might. He certainly deserves the (belated) chance to show what he can do.
No no, it’s what Choo looks like when he has a bad atbat. It’s pretty amusing that they all have pretty much the same mechanics.

Hello woodsmeister,
No offense, but I’d prefer we shut down Betancourt for the rest of this season. His previous track record (and I’m not just referring to his 2007 season, but his entire track record), along with the velocity on the radar gun and the movement on his pitches suggests to me that his arm is tired, likely due to the overuse during the 2007 season and the length of the 2007 season.
By shutting him down now or in the very near future, I would hope his arm would bounce back and enable him to pitch more like he is capable of and has done in the 2009 season. Besides, we could use those appearances to evaluate guys like Slocum, Mujica, Rincon, Stevens (eventually), etc. I’d consider shutting down Lewis too, as his velocity still isn’t where it normally is (low to mid-90s like it was last year and like it was in his previous seasons).
Just my 2 cents – no offense.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Whoops – sorry Greg – I read that a bit too quickly. Though I’m not sure the others replying to him thought he was totally joking, though I can see where he could have been joking.
Still, I wouldn’t use Betancourt at all for the rest of the season, and not because he’s been imploding lately – seriously, shut him down – there’s no reason to think pitching him the rest of this season is going to help him pitch better when his velocity and command has been off in virtually every outing. Pitching him regularly hasn’t helped – try shutting him down and hope he regains his arm strength and command for 2009.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

I think they pick an inning (or is it always the 5th?) and give out money for every hit. $100 for a single, $200 for a double, $500 for a homer (don’t know about a triple). That’s what they did tonight, anyway.

Register at STOHD.com. 5th inning – $100 for a single, $200 for a double, $300 for a triple, $500 for a homer. After each hit they pull another name out of the hopper.

You sign up on STOHD.com; if your name is selected, the first Indians’ hit of the 5th inning determines the Shell Gas card you win:
Single – $100
Double – $200
Triple – $300
Homerun – $500
In the fifth inning of tonight’s ballgame, three HRs were hit, so three different people earned $500 gas cards! (If one person wins, the next person out of 10 people selected for that game is eligible, and so on and so forth).
Hopefully, that helps!
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
We get to see Rincon – evaluation time – let’s hope he does!
By the way, what is Rincon’s status for next season – do we have him, or just through this year?
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
My biggest worry for 2008, is that some of these retreads actually perform decently .. then we are stuck with them for 09 and sitting there in July wondering why they aren’t DFA’d yet.
yeah but for the bullpen does it really matter. I mean Raffy B performed about the best one could imagine last season, he stuck around for this year and has sucked.
True, but Betancourt has been quite good every year but this year – granted, 2007 was great, but before that, Betancourt was pretty good too, so signing him to a long-term extension wasn’t bad, except in hindsight, but like I said, I really think his arm is tired.
Hamilton keeps mentioning that the Indians don’t have anyone in the bullpen throwing 93-94 MPH outside of Rincon. Strange – Betancourt always reached 93-94, and Lewis also did last season. Isn’t it strange that they’re not considered able to reach those velocities this year? I think their arms are both tired from the long season and overuse last year (due to the fact Wedge only used the Raffies, Lewis, and JoeBo in 2007 in most of the bullpen outings).
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
I too – I think something’s wrong – heck, I’d shut down both Betancourt and Lewis now and see if their arms bounce back in 2009. Besides, we can use the evaluation period for other pitchers we’re not that familiar with (Rincon, Slocum, etc.) or not that confident in (Mujica, Slocum, etc.)
That’s just my 2 cents. :-)
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Thanks – I think that’s partly why the bullpen has been so ineffective this year – at least two of our pitchers are not pitching at 100% velocity, and they weren’t mid- to upper-90s flamethrowers, so with the few miles lost on the fastball, that makes them more hittable, especially if their command isn’t as sharp, which it hasn’t been this year (Lewis’ HR that he gave up last night as the latest incident).
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Yes, plus Borowski’s tightrope act collapsed, putting even more pressure on the three guys Wedge trusted.
Good point – yes, even during JoeBo’s “good” year, his tightrope act caused the other three to have to be “on alert” in case they had to bail him out or pitch in extra innings when he blew save chances or gave up part of a lead and Wedge would call on one of the others to warm up in the bullpen, just in case.
I’d consider shutting down Perez early too, though because he’s pitching well, I might wait until late August, early September to shut him down or not use him more than once a week. It’s better to protect those arms and hope that Betancourt and Lewis rebound in a season where we’re not going anywhere anyway, and need to find more quality relievers (Rincon? Masa? Mujica? Slocum? Stevens, eventually) – personally, I think they should have plenty of chances to show their “stuff”?
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
he had 5.066, so with 106 days of service time this year, he’s earns his free agency.
did you see what Blake said to him when they picked up Rincon? he told Rincon, a former friend from the MIN organization, “we’re a steroids free club over here”

You’re welcome – I think that incident happened in either the 2006 or 2007 postseason (for AA Akron, that is – can’t remember which year it was off the top of my head. Torres was injured and out for a bit, while Buzachero was suspended, released, then brought back).

Hegan’s description of Rincon sounds very much like Betancourt – “sneaky fast, 94 MPH” – I’d shut down Betancourt – losing a few miles off of his fastball for the whole season after a long season suggests to me that his arm is tired.
