Michael Brantley's back

Brantley pinch hit tonight, his first game action since 6/26, so I guess the PTBNL question will be resolved fairly soon.

I will be so let down if Brantley isn’t the guy.

by Toxicadam on Jul 10, 2008 10:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Really?

I know I got everyone all juiced up on this guy, but if Green is a legit 2B, he’s a very good catch, too. I lean toward Brantley but I can see considering them fairly equivalent. Remember, Brantley isn’t supposed to be anything special in CF, not to mention, we already have a guy.

by Jay on Jul 11, 2008 11:48 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i still want green more – as a 2B only, though.

by Brick. on Jul 11, 2008 12:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed. if green isn’t a 2Ber, then brantley for me

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 3:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like Brantley more, too, but there is a certain attraction to someone who can play both 3B and 2B more-or-less adequately, given that we don’t know whether AsCab has fixed stuff or is just thriving in a league where Zach Jackson, John Halama and Jeff Weaver can get jobs plus we don’t know how the great Andy Marte Would Be Awesome If Wedge Would Play Him Already Plan of 2008 is going to turn out.

hmmm, didn’t think about that.

I wouldn’t mind it if we contributed another piece to the Brewcrew and got both of these guys. There’s enough to like about both of them. My preference for Brantley is very slim.

by jhon on Jul 11, 2008 5:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree with the general line of thinking, except that I think Green is a guy who doesn’t figure to be a factor until 2011, when the present circumstances won’t necessarily be relevant anymore.

by Jay on Jul 11, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t think either of these guys will be making an immediate (or even very near future) impact, so I think this is like the draft…you go for the more talented player without consideration of need. As an organization, we have a much greater need for middle infield prospects than outfield guy. But I don’t think that should be a huge factor. I don’t know which is a more talented player, but my leaning is towards Brantley. But I’m very glad to have more time to look at the two and figure out the answer to that question.

CROWE LOVER

by afh4 on Jul 12, 2008 4:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’ve never seen the kid play, but on paper he seems like that prototypical leadoff hitter I’ve been yearning for since Kenny left. He would be a great backup plan in case Trevor Crowe falls on his face.

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 12:47 PM EDT to parent up   1 recs

He is a great backup plan now that Trevor Crowe has fallen on his face, repeatedly.

Fixed.

by afh4 on Jul 11, 2008 6:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I took his remark as ironic and gave it a “rec” for subtlety.

Yours is nice, too, though.

New and/or prospective Indians tonight:
The Porta: 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI
Green: 2-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Brantley: 1-for-1, 1 RBI
Bryson didn’t pitch, given his 2 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 ER performance last night for the Captains

by FredOx on Jul 11, 2008 12:43 AM EDT   0 recs

Do we know if they plan on keeping Bryson in the pen, or is he going to start at Lake County at all?

by fingolfin on Jul 11, 2008 10:13 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’d stretch him out at the end of the year, but that’s just me. Why not? I don’t see the benefit of not having a talented youngster start in the minors. If he succeeds, he’s a starter in the majors (and is probably more valuable than a reliever). If not, he comes to the majors out of the pen (Raffy Perez? Jon Papelbon? Jon Broxton?). The only scenario I see not to stretch him out is that a) he was a reliever in college, or b) he’s absolutely terrible in limited starting experience.

Apparently the Brewers have a system where they rotate their youngest pitchers through various roles. So they start sometimes, do long relief sometimes, and do some late-inning relief. Seems like it would take a lot of planning to get everyone their regular work, but that’s what they do. I think the idea is to give them some starting experience while not ballooning their innings.

by Jay on Jul 11, 2008 11:50 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They’re going to keep him in the pen, but for extended work, 2-3 innings at a time. Not as closer, unless it happens to happen at the end of a stint. They want to expose him to a whole turn of the opposing lineup, and work on all his pitches. Keeping their options open… (per LC announcers)

Oh, and he’s playing left field, not center. box score.

He's extremely quick and good.

I saw he got pinch hit for and got nervous that maybe he re-injured himself. Then I saw this:

  • Patrick Ryan walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Robert Manuel replaces Sam Lecure, batting 9th.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Freddy Parejo replaces Michael Brantley.
  • Chattanooga Lookouts Manager Mike Goff ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Chattanooga Lookouts pitcher Sam Lecure ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Chattanooga Lookouts catcher Craig Tatum ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Chattanooga Lookouts second baseman Justin Turner ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Chattanooga Lookouts center fielder Sean Henry ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Huntsville Stars second baseman Mike Bell ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Huntsville Stars center fielder Michael Brantley ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Huntsville Stars catcher Angel Salome ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Huntsville Stars pitcher David Welch ejected by HP umpire Takeshi Hirabayashi.
  • Freddy Parejo walks. Patrick Ryan to 2nd.
  • Lorenzo Cain grounds into a force out, shortstop Eric Eymann to second baseman Justin Turner. Patrick Ryan to 3rd. Freddy Parejo out at 2nd. Lorenzo Cain to 1st.
  • Alcides Escobar lines out to second baseman Justin Turner.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Martin Maldonado replaces Angel Salome.
  • Martin Maldonado flies out to left fielder Michael DeJesus.

I like him already.

video of the incident

audio, scroll to 2:13:00.

Trouble was imminent in the bottom of the fourth inning when Huntsville relief pitcher Patrick Ryan hit Tonys Gutierrez in the knee. Gutierrez had launched a grand slam off Stars starter Donovan Hand in the second inning to give the Lookouts an 8-2 lead, and Ryan had just allowed a solo shot to Danny Dorn before throwing at Gutierrez.

Ryan was up first against Lookouts starter Sam LeCure in the top of the fifth, and LeCure threw inside several times before allowing a walk.

Michael Brantley was up next and, after dodging two inside pitches, lifted his bat at LeCure and walked toward the mound.

Lookouts catcher Craig Tatum pounced on Brantley, and the dugouts emptied. Sean Henry raced from center field to mix it up with Ryan at first base, while Lookouts second baseman Justin Turner and closer Carlos Fisher found themselves outnumbered after positioning themselves in front of Huntsville’s dugout.

(Apologize for the subject above)

Taylor Green had a good game in an otherwise dismal evening for Brevard County, going 2-3 with a walk. He’d been struggling a bit since the trade was announced.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 12, 2008 8:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Exact numbers: he was 3-24 with one walk since the trade.

He's extremely quick and good.

Bit of a strange position for Brewers fans. If a guy starts kicking ass, you have to root for him not to be on the list. You’re almost in the position of rooting for the guys with the highest potential to have a bad month or two.

would like to see highlights of Brantley’s return. He along with a zillion other players got ejected by a Japanese umpire.
