For the record, I had my 2 pics ready to come in here with once i saw the lineup. of course, someone beat me to it.

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.

is Gutz on the roster? why the hell is Dellucci playing

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 6:55 PM EDT   0 recs

shhhh. He’s concentrating on his Dominos

by jhon on Jul 11, 2008 7:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

even in this lost season, i think i die a little inside every time Dellucci suits up.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it’s ridiculous. we need to know if gutz will ever hit enough to be a starter. dellucci is bait.

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

the guy is worse than bait…he’s chum. dump him out of the boat, he stinks

I want to see Tampa take the East as much as the next guy-I fume inside just thinking about the Red Sox, but I’ll voice a little secret: Tampa’s lineup-outside of the young Longoria and to a lesser extent Pena—really stinks. They have the pitching but not the bats to hold down the Red Sox all season. Winning the wildcard would be a stunning overachievement.

And in several hours the Tribe will have beaten them again.

Lets Go Tribe

One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play

by new zealand tribe fan on Jul 11, 2008 7:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Allright, go Tribe. Go Cliff. Cheers.

by jhon on Jul 11, 2008 7:05 PM EDT   0 recs

let’s have another great start, Kkkliff.

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 7:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow I’m slow on the KKKliff…I just got it and I am stone cold sober.

ichiro is being paid 17 million? wow the mariners are dumb

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:09 PM EDT   0 recs

I always thought that Ichiro would look nice leading off for the Tribe and playing right field until he made that stupid comment about Cleveland last year.

Still an Ohio boy through and through!

by TribeLoverInNewYork on Jul 11, 2008 7:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that and he just doesn’t care that much about trying hard at baseball

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Who cares? Effort is hardly the equal of talent.

Proud supporter of the Cleveland.

by fwembt on Jul 12, 2008 12:29 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Talent without effort is useless.

by mauichuck on Jul 12, 2008 9:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Was this comment ironic?

by Jay on Jul 12, 2008 3:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, it sort of was. My main point is that a talented player can still be effective without a supreme effort. A player who puts forth supreme effort but has little talent will be deifid by the media and essentially useless on the field.

Proud supporter of the Cleveland.

by fwembt on Jul 12, 2008 6:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think this is tremendously wrong or at least vastly over-simplified. You’re talking about appearing to make an effort on an individual play. That is only a tiny amount of the effort that goes into being a ballplayer.

What appears to the naked eye to be “talent” is very often the product of an immense amount of effort, honed over many years. If there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s that the top raw talents do not in fact rise to the top of the game, but rather only those who devote themselves tirelessly to making the most of their talent.

by Jay on Jul 13, 2008 7:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My argument is that players who rely simply on effort will never, ever make the impact of a more talented player who does not exrt as much effort on a given play. That is vastly over-simplified but, in the day of ESPN, isn’t everything?

Proud supporter of the Cleveland.

by fwembt on Jul 17, 2008 6:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sort of a pointless argument.

There is no “purely on effort” because there’s nobody who’s totally lacking in talent.

How much talent does it take to make up for X amount of less effort? Quite a bit more than most assume.

by Jay on Jul 17, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think we are discussing different effort here. You would point to Manny and say that he gives a tremendous amount of effort to get where he is. (And he does). I would say that Manny’s talent enables him to not have to xert himself on day by day basis on the scale that someone like John McDonald has to, just to keep a job.

But yes, this is pretty pointless.

Proud supporter of the Cleveland.

by fwembt on Jul 18, 2008 10:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And I would say, Manny reportedly has worked on his hitting as much as or more than any other ballplayer alive — and you have no way of separating his talent from his work with your naked eye.

You think you’re seeing talent, but in reality, you have absolutely no idea.

by Jay on Jul 19, 2008 3:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You are missing the point here. I am saying that Manny (just for example) does not have to exert, from game to game, the sort of effort of a John McDonald or Jody Gerut. I know that Manny works extremely hard on his hitting (you can read that anywhere)but what he does not have to do is constantly grind the way players with lesser talent do.

The original argument here was that Ichiro was not worth consideration because he didn’t seem to care enough to try hard. Whatever that means. I say it does not matter if he looks like he tries hard or not, his talent transcends his supposed alck o effort.

You think you are seeing the product of years and years of effort, but in reality, you have no idea.

Proud supporter of the Cleveland.

by fwembt on Jul 20, 2008 5:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m not missing the point, the point is ridiculous. The significant grinding effort doesn’t happen during each game, it happens before each game and in the offseason. Players take 5-10 times as many swings in the cages and in batting practice as they’ll take in the actual game.

During the actual game, the at-bats are relatively brief, and if you somehow think that Manny is exerting or focusing less for those 4-5 encounters of 90 seconds in each game … well, that’s just nuts. If he wasn’t focused and exerting, he couldn’t do anything at the plate. Nobody could.

by Jay on Jul 22, 2008 2:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

pena is hitting 4th? why

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:12 PM EDT   0 recs

oh my god the Rays are last in the league in doubles? casey blake could hit 5th for them. (longoria should be hitting 4th)

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Is that a good inning? I think that was a good inning.

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 7:15 PM EDT   0 recs

24 pitches isn’t awesome, but 3 K’s is pretty cool.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 7:25 PM EDT   0 recs

i personally guarantee that the indians will pick up the remainder of casey blake’s salary if they trade him

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:25 PM EDT   0 recs

He’s going to the Mets to pick up for Alou and the Mets are gonna estatic to have him.

Casey swung at ball 4 twice there. :/

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 7:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Exactly what I was going to post. He’ll swing at ball four, but he’ll take a called third strike with the best of them.

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

good combo.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that sounded like (reading gameday) a very ben francisco/victor martinez – esque weak pop to an infielder w/ RISP. someone else can know our pain

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:35 PM EDT   0 recs

I’m here only for a couple of minutes. Casey, btw, is now in the top 30 in OPS for eligible AL batters. Grady is our only other player in that group (#8). Casey has been a decent offensive contributor this season and now that Garko sucks he’ s not even blocking Marte. Could we lay off him just a little? (ducks).

by Denver Tribe Fan on Jul 11, 2008 7:36 PM EDT   0 recs

i’m with you. i’ve been saying for a couple of weeks that blake is our most valuable offensive player…clearly that is actually grady, but is there even a close competitor to casey right now? please, be sure to factor in the beard/grit

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’ve been beginning to feel this way over the last 10 days or so.

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.

by westbrook on Jul 11, 2008 7:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

BAD D!

Any news on Sexson?

Still an Ohio boy through and through!

by TribeLoverInNewYork on Jul 11, 2008 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Yea. Even though he’s currently not on a roster, he still managed to go 0-4 today with 3Ks.

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

dellucci…you such so hard

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

0-2 Clifford….bring it back now.

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:47 PM EDT   0 recs

how’d we get our 1? forgot to set up the DVR. too lazy to find a box/cast

by Brick. on Jul 11, 2008 7:49 PM EDT   0 recs

BenFran infield single off the glove of Longoria…tough hop back-hander that he couldn’t pick. Jhonny took a low curveball to RF, Gomes misjudged it, and they called it a double. Run Scored

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

is it me or has jhonny been in one of his good inconsistent stretches?

he’s going to end the year with solid numbers. i think he’s consistent, just in his own way.

by Brick. on Jul 11, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

also!

thanks.

Fausto’s set for a rehab assignment. Ginter to get the start tomorrow. Somebody has to be moved off the 40. Mastny? Maybe try and slip Bullington through waives? Brad Snyder?

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:52 PM EDT   0 recs

my mood will elevate just by getting to see fausto throw every 5th. get drubs up here and i’m a content camper – all things considered. i love those kids.

he says “TAKE THAT” to the league adjusting to him. we need more of that.

that was a terrible call by hegan

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 11, 2008 7:59 PM EDT   0 recs

It must be a bad angle for them to see. Underwood botched a similar homerun last night (Choo).

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Locked in. How can a guy who can drive that pitch that far struggle as much as he has this season?

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 7:59 PM EDT   0 recs

‘tis the mystery of Jhonny Peralta.

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.

by westbrook on Jul 11, 2008 8:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’d be really happy to sell on Jhonny at this point, if someone just looked at his power.

by NickFantana on Jul 11, 2008 8:00 PM EDT   0 recs

I think your crazy. He’s still a keeper.

by Toxicadam on Jul 11, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i’m with you. keep jhonny in the fold

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 11, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It’d have to be the right mix of players. I’m not opposed to it. I like a 30HR shortstop, but a .300OBP is just not cool. I don’t think he’s a .300OBP hitter. I do think he can be a 30HR guy, though. He just has to want to hit it to RF every at-bat, like Jeter.

by xrickx on Jul 11, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

you go to hell. you go to hell and you die. leave my jhonny alone!

by Brick. on Jul 11, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Peralta is worth more to us than to anyone else, IMO.
