Hector Rondon - Futures Game Report
BA was blogging the game inning by inning and had a nice review of Rondon. "Clean arm action - explosive fastball sitting at 93" . Nice.

i caught a replay of the game today and I was impressed with the Indians prospects. Rondon had a very live arm and good movement on his fastball. His breaking also looked pretty solid. If he fills out his frame, I imagine he could gain a couple MPH, and the thought of him and Carmona shattering bats is a pleasont one.
Both Hodges and LaPorta looked good too. They both had a hit (LaPorta a single that deflected off the 3rd baseman’s glove, and Hodges smoked a ground rule double down the left field line). I also was impressed by LaPorta defense at 1st—he had 2 good picks, one of which was the end of a double play started by Hodges.
The future looks bright

It is amazing what a difference Laporta makes in thinking about our farm system. Now all of a sudden we have three plus offensive guys (Laporta, Mills, Weglarz – maybe Hodges) to go along with all of our pitching depth (Huff, Rondon, De La Cruz et al.). Lord Kelvin had another great start last night (7IP, 1R, 1BB, 7K). Scott Lewis is having a great start this afternoon (4IP, 1H, 0BB, 5K).

How Is Jeanmar Gomez doing this year? I always counted him in the Rondon, De La Cruz group

Not super, but as a 20-year old with improving strikeout numbers and a 6’4” frame in high-A ball, he’s still interesting. He’s had control issues.

I watched the game and Rondon looked pretty good. He reminded me a little of Pedro’s brother Ramon Martinez with that real loose arm action. I agree with JP that he might be able to add a few Mph with some refinement. He showed a pretty nasty slider as well that got fouled off. Also he was really intense with a good mound presence which you have to believe is tough pitching in Yankee stadium in an All-Star game for the first time.

yeah, and aside from that foul ball that McCutchen hit (the would’ve been upperdeck homer), none of his pitches were hit hard at all.

One thing I’ve picked up about Rondon from listening in from time to time on his starts at Kinston is that he doesn’t hesitate to throw inside and keep hitters off the plate. They talk a lot about his aggressive attitude on the mound.

Don’t you think the Indians could spree for an Aero Bed or something? I mean…I’ve slept on couches before. But they’re not exactly the best thing for your back.

Better yet, just book him a room at the Quaker Square Inn for two weeks. He’ll probably be in Buffalo by then, and they’d only be out about two grand. It’s only a few blocks to Canal Park, and the rooms are all round, like a baseball.

This is amazing.
Keep in mind, this is a guy who just one year ago received a check for $2 million.
