Midseason Stats of the Pitching Prospects that Matter
Here's the next installment of DiamondView Lite's efforts. I've got the pitchers coded in and Sean Forman from Baseball Reference said it's fine as long as I cite them. Again, please let me know if you think I should add or remove anyone's name.

Boy, Huff’s line really jumps off the page. K/BB over 10, IP/HR over 10, and more Ks than IP. In AAA at age 23. Kid looks legit.

Sipp, Rondon, and Stevens. Good to see the Phillips trade result isn’t a turd.

Adam Miller doesn’t matter anymore? Too old?
by ken from alexandria on Jul 16, 2008 10:07 PM EDT 0 recs
Hello Ken,
It’s probably not Miller’s age so much (he’ll only turn 24-YO in November), but being that he’s been injured so much, and really didn’t pitch that much this season, they probably felt there was no reason to include him – his sample size for 2008 was small and he’s dealt with an injury for most of the season.
The same could almost be said for Lofgren, though Lofgren did pitch more than Miller, and arguably, the luster is even more off of Lofgren than Miller because, unlike Miller, Lofgren hasn’t been able to harness his stuff to the degree Miller has.
Just my 2 cents.

I’ve always been a Gomez fan, but his line is indicating to me a move to the bullpen might be the way to go. Anyone have any idea on how fast he throws?
by Roger Dorn on Jul 16, 2008 11:36 PM EDT 0 recs
Hello Roger,
I too like Gomez (as I do Rondon, and that was before his great 2008 season – now I like him even more! :-), but I too wonder if a move to the bullpen might be in his future, though Gomez is a year younger than Rondon, so he does have time to work out the kinks – he’ll only be 20 in October, so the Indians will probably keep him as a starter for another season or two before they consider a permanent move to the bullpen.
This link is from TheClevelandFan.com back in January when they ranked our top 50 prospects. Gomez was #27 and was rated to have an 87-90 MPH fastball that could reach 93 MPH (that may have changed this season – not sure). You can read more of a profile on him at that link as well. I hope it’s helpful!

Hello again Roger,
Reading that review more in-depth, as it’s been a few months since I last read it, I’ll be surprised if they move Rondon too quickly to the bullpen. His growth potential in terms of size, stuff, and command is good to very good, and last season, Gomez did better in the second half, so it will be interesting to see if Gomez does better than he’s done so far in the second half of this season.
As I mentioned above, he’ll probably get another year or two as a starter before they consider a permanent move to the bullpen. That review also suggests he could gain additional velocity, being that he’s still just 19-YO and still growing into his frame. By comparison, he’s younger than both Rondon and De La Cruz, both of whom are having excellent seasons, but Gomez is at the same level as Rondon and at a level higher than De La Cruz, just to keep in mind that Gomez still has some time to figure it all out.
Just my 2 cents.

I don’t have time to compile the numbers right now…but there are a few “interesting” pitchers I might add to the list (even if they don’t matter):
Zach Jackson
J.D. Martin
Brian Slocum
Randy Newsom
Reid Santos (and his soon to be vacated 40-man spot)
Luis Perdomo
Ryan Edell
Josh Tomlin
Mike Pontius
Ryan Miller
Joey Mahalic
Rob Bryson
Paolo Espino

I’d like to see Tomlin get promoted to AA. He’s 23 and putting up pretty impressive numbers at Kinston. I’d add Stephen Wright to this list as he pitched pretty well at Kinston, before hitting a rough patch upon promotion to AA.

For most of those “older young guys,” getting promoted to Double-A is the rough patch.

Sporting a dingy 5.5 ERA against a bunch of teenagers in the GCL. Decent K-rate, but nothing to write home and/or Lookout Landing about.

Keep in mind that Rosario himself is only 19-YO (won’t turn 20 until late August), so it’s not like he’s old for the league – he’s a teenager himself.
Sometimes, “fruit” blossoms immediately, sometimes “fruit” blossoms after a time, and sometimes, “fruit” doesn’t blossom at all, but at this point, #2 (after a time) is still possible for Rosario. Let’s wait and see if that “fruit” blossoms a year or two from now – he certainly is young enough for that to be a possibility.
And if he does, then we can let Lookout Landing know at that point. :-)
Just my 2 cents.

I’ve got a limited reserve of nuanced cheering, Joe, and I used it all up on Marte. For everybody else, it’s all or nothing.
Sorry, Greg.

unless you mean “ripens,” i have to go with #3 being the most likely scenario in almost any imaginable case.

Also, 19 year old Joe Mahalic playing this year with De La Cruz at Lake County is worth following.
