Whenever I’m feeling down about being a mediocre grad student with suffering career prospects, I try to remember that we won WWII.

I could actually go for a drink myself. Andrew, here’s to the second half. And winning WWII. Cheers.

Seattle color guy aruging that Bryan LaHair will hit better in majors than in AAA b/c of the guys around him who have good approaches.
Victor Martinez does not have a bad shoulder, Seattle play by play man.
Somebody get me a job in a booth. I would at least try to be correct.
so i’m working on a way to use joe’s (ifan’s) ripening fruit as baseball prospects analogy at work next week.
hey brick: jhonny totally needs to wake up out there. i can’t believe he didn’t dive for that ball
oh wait
Jhonny’s never going to have the athleticism of a Ron Belliard and you’re just gonna have to deal with that.

someday i want belliard to play in one of those celebrity softball games and play the roving outfielder.
I’ve always hoped to cross Russ Branyan on a softball field someday.

Wait holy crap, are you guys IJ fans too? I haven’t read it in nearly 10 years and those characters are still running around in my head.
“emil minty” is a minor character in David Foster Wallace’s book Infinite Jest.
Oh, duh, apparently emil minty is also the name of the kid that played that kid. Never mind.
/buries nose in book
I have never read that book. But I read constantly. Right now, as I watch this game, I’m reading Chabon’s new non-fiction. Right now, I’m reading some essay on how Cormac McCarthy’s the road is a sci-fi Western, in actuality.
I’m more embarrassed that there was Squirt in the house. I didn’t know it’s rep as a mixer, I guess. My roommate likes anachronistic sodas.
If you’re an Indians fan, you have to say “pop”, that is an iron clad rule

Oh justified to be upset, but that’s the situation where he needed to partake in some Shap Doublespeak. I’m sure some of the players in his organization weren’t all too thrilled to hear some of that.

The end was pretty funny when he talked about why he had the scar on his forehead.
by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Our national sports news broadcast just showed the whole five minute conversation with the media. After the stuff that has been written about, he suddenly lightens up and starts joking with the media. Told the media something about that he got the scar on his forehead after walking into his motorhome after he heard the news from Soriano’s agent.

most disapointed i’ve ever been in my life at a zoo.
you walk in there and it’s like an interactive learning center. there’s more computers in there than animals.
Oddly enough I’ve been to Chicago once and spent literally twenty minutes visiting Lincoln Zoo. Pretty covered the whole place.

On a side note, I’m incredibly jealous of the fact you don’t have to watch the Olympics in the middle of the goddamn night. I’m pretty much going to pretend I’m a shiftworker for the three weeks.

Yeah mine’s gonna be working overtime, but I can’t DVR all of the online coverage. I’m just writing a paper for August anyways so it’s not like I can’t sleep all day.

i’m really looking forward to the olympics this year for some reason. probably to take my mind off the indians.
what sports do you get into?
yeah, track/marathon, swimming and of couse baseball. i always find myself watching a lot of volleyball and water polo too
You know what sucks? The fact my country is good at rowing, diving and gymnastics. Makes for a great three weeks.
by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ll pretty much just watch every sport that our national carrier shows from “morning” until “night”. Since we get the NBC coverage too, it’s interesting to notice the differences between the NBC and CBC coverage. Whereas CBC will show everything they possibly can live, NBC shows more of a “highlight package”-type broadcast and it seems like you guys have access to fewer sports. Plus I would say we get a lot more non-Canadian coverage than you get non-American coverage, but that’s largely a product of the fact that you have contenders in nearly every event.
by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions
coverage has been getting better since they use all of the networks they own to show more of the obscure stuff which is all nicely sans bob costas, too
Yeah true. The strictly NBC stuff is brutal eh?

Should have a small wager on who wins the most gold medals, Canada or New Zealand?
One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play
by new zealand tribe fan on Jul 18, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha sure, a beer to the winner should either of us visit the other’s homeland.
The neat thing about this is that both of our countries will have only a handful of gold medallists from each Olympics who basically become national heroes. 36 gold medals from the US? That’s just overkill.
by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions
And for comedy’s sake, here are the events in which Canada won a medal in 2004. Yeah we play some boring-ass sports.

The attributes of Australia get talked up all the time here, but I never hear much about New Zealand. Just the stereotypical kiwis, sheep, rugby and Captain Cook.

Agree, our gold medallists are treated very much as national heroes, as a nation we have only ever won something like 32 gold medals. When someone does it is a big deal.

Yeah, try to get your vomit into a trash can.

Sometimes, the onion rots in the sun, getting brown and unappetizing. Sometimes the onion is spliced and deep-fried and served at Outback Steakhouse. There’s still a chance that #2 happens for Jordan Brown.

by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions
See I don’t picture as Sowers as someone who gets laid at a good clip. Sure he’s a major league and thus reaches some sort of baseline layage, but he seems too shy.

The Michael Keaton/Kim Basinger/Jack Nicholson one.
by supermarioelia on Jul 18, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions
See those ones I loved because it’s the 60s, what the hell else can we expect? But the Keaton one just didn’t make sense to me. Like why was there a question whether Batman was “friend or foe”? What did he do that was evil? And why did they suddenly introduce the “people of Gotham are greedy” angle at the end? Was there anything that led up to that?
