gasp BASEBALL! I am saved.

by Voltaire on Jul 18, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wegz finishes 1-3 with an HBP. Mills 2-4. Rivero hit a double.

Pestano, maybe finally settling in, got the save with 2 K’s.

Whenever I’m feeling down about being a mediocre grad student with suffering career prospects, I try to remember that we won WWII.

I could actually go for a drink myself. Andrew, here’s to the second half. And winning WWII. Cheers.

Are you talking to me? I’m already drunk. Screw you guys.

That was directed at G.fo.P. Andrew, but screw you as well.

I thought that was an uplifting tale. Personally I made it through 10 minutes and turned it off. I just watched Ghandi. I want to get drunk as well.

Jhonny’s never going to have the athleticism of a Ron Belliard and you’re just gonna have to deal with that.

by fleerdon on Jul 18, 2008 10:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ronnie Belliard is that fat guy that everyone thinks is fat until he:

A) Dunks a basketball on you.

B) Freak dances your girl so well that she leaves you.

by afh4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

someday i want belliard to play in one of those celebrity softball games and play the roving outfielder.

by Brick. on Jul 18, 2008 10:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wait holy crap, are you guys IJ fans too? I haven’t read it in nearly 10 years and those characters are still running around in my head.

by mrich on Jul 18, 2008 10:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

IJ? Huh?

Mad Max?

by afh4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

“emil minty” is a minor character in David Foster Wallace’s book Infinite Jest.

Oh, duh, apparently emil minty is also the name of the kid that played that kid. Never mind.

/buries nose in book

by mrich on Jul 18, 2008 10:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I have never read that book. But I read constantly. Right now, as I watch this game, I’m reading Chabon’s new non-fiction. Right now, I’m reading some essay on how Cormac McCarthy’s the road is a sci-fi Western, in actuality.

by afh4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dude. Read it. Don’t be put off by the length or the footnotes or the big words. It’s freaking awesome.

by mrich on Jul 18, 2008 10:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’ll put it on the nightstand. That’s the tarmac before departure.

by afh4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or rather, the movie probably got it from that

by Brick. on Jul 18, 2008 10:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i don’t know what IJ is. but it must get it from this:

by Brick. on Jul 18, 2008 10:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Feral Kid was his avatar for a while.

by afh4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

squirt still exists?

that really doesn’t sound all bad

by Brick. on Jul 18, 2008 10:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m more embarrassed that there was Squirt in the house. I didn’t know it’s rep as a mixer, I guess. My roommate likes anachronistic sodas.

by millionairesrow on Jul 18, 2008 10:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What’s your brand?

by fleerdon on Jul 18, 2008 10:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tonight it’s Citadelle. I’m pretty adventurous with gin. Push comes to shove I like Hendrix a lot and under limited choices Sapphire is good.

But I also drink a lot of cheap gin.

I’ll pretty much just watch every sport that our national carrier shows from “morning” until “night”. Since we get the NBC coverage too, it’s interesting to notice the differences between the NBC and CBC coverage. Whereas CBC will show everything they possibly can live, NBC shows more of a “highlight package”-type broadcast and it seems like you guys have access to fewer sports. Plus I would say we get a lot more non-Canadian coverage than you get non-American coverage, but that’s largely a product of the fact that you have contenders in nearly every event.

New Zealand will always have Arthur Lydiard

by Brick. on Jul 18, 2008 11:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haha sure, a beer to the winner should either of us visit the other’s homeland.

The neat thing about this is that both of our countries will have only a handful of gold medallists from each Olympics who basically become national heroes. 36 gold medals from the US? That’s just overkill.
