i’d have to disagree. same price it’s gotta be CC. he’s younger, better stuff overall, more proven over a longer period. we’re fawning over Cliff, and rightfully so, but he wasn’t even on the playoff roster last year.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 2, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

You think the 2007 version of Cliff Lee (he with the ERA over six) would have won us the ALCS? I don’t remember you advocating that at the time…

by Jeffrey R on Jul 2, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well yeah a little over the top. After all Cliff was injured. But I just don’t think that a healthy Cliff would have gagged the way CC did. His play-off performance was very, very disappointing to say the least.

Resident LGT beer kinda sewer

by mauichuck on Jul 2, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

But Cliff wasn’t injured at the time; he just wasn’t pitching well. Remember, he came back and pitched out of the bullpen in September.

by Jeffrey R on Jul 2, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think you would have written that last sentence last year during the playoffs. You can’t judge a pitcher based on 2 or 3 games.

Just looked at the lineup … has Gutz sucked (even more) lately or something? Why is Dellucci DHing? That’s ABSURD. BenFran should be DH, Choo can’t be worse in left than right, and let Gutz play right. I don’t understand what Wedge is doing this year. At all.

by Roger Dorn on Jul 2, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m sure it can be rationalized, but does anyone feel that this is the right move? That we’re a better team because Dellucci is getting at bats and not Gutz?

Free Andy Marte!

Pronk Needs You

by woodsmeister on Jul 2, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

What separates this from the Marte/Blake situation is:

a. Blake actually has trade value and
b. Blake can play defensively at multiple positions (even if we choose not to use that skill)

by Roger Dorn on Jul 2, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

so we moved Michaels out instead of Dellucci b/c:
a. we thought dellucci could help us win more games
b. we though we could get more for michaels
c. michaels’ contract was easier to unload

which is it? i have no idea, but my guess is c.?

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 2, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

d. Michaels’ skills were more redundant with Francisco/Blake/Marte.

by Jay on Jul 2, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, if Dellucci is in the lineup, then he should be the DH – his arm is awful, and his range isn’t very good either.

But as to the question of whether he should be in the lineup, that’s another matter….

by Ryan on Jul 2, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re absolutely right, I’m just willing to go ahead and say he shouldn’t be in the lineup. If the team is healthy, he shouldn’t be in the lineup ever. With so many injuries, maybe once a week.

Il faut d'abord durer.

by CU Adam on Jul 2, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

point one: very true.

I think Shap gets a bad rap for “sitting on his hands” in the off-season. He added two good players to a roster of young guys that was one game from the world series. Sure, we needed a corner OF bat .. but that probably would have cost us Laffey/Lee to make it happen.

It just dawned on me that, besides playing a spoiler later in the season against teams I dislike, (without looking at a schedule, I’d assume we have some games against playoff hopefuls in September), this might be the last Tribe game of the year where I really want to win, more than just because it’s more fun to watch a win than a loss. It’d be nice for CC to get a W, if this is going to be his last start with the Tribe.

Spectacular. I would give a LOT for the Twins to be within a couple games at the end, and the Rays and Sox tied, and then have the Tribe end the season on a 9 game winning streak.

Conversely, can you imagine how fun those series would have been if we were in the race at the end? That would have been awesome.

Remember when we tried out Carmona as the closer? That’s how I feel now again. Two years ago. I’m back.

by NickFantana on Jul 2, 2008 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Wedge said he would be in meetings tomorrow to decide what decisions to make, including the closer situation and JoBo.

We’ll see who’s gone by Friday.

by palcal on Jul 2, 2008 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

The decisions of who is gone by Friday that I’m interested in aren’t being made by Wedge.

by xrickx on Jul 2, 2008 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

he’ll be in the meeting where it is discussed and he can have his say

if he doesn’t like the decisions, he can quit

by palcal on Jul 2, 2008 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Anybody else willing to spend a significant sum of money to sit in on that meeting? I think it’d be cool.

I’ve gotta admit, Casey Blake’s really grown on me.

I like how Hammy had a mocking tone knowing this team was done and about to get blowed up (hat tip to Emmitt Smith).

The 2008 Cleveland Indians: Home of the Triple Steal, Unassisted Triple Play, and not a heck of a lot more.

by westbrook on Jul 2, 2008 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Really it should have never come down to the 10th. We had bases loaded a few times (Choo on 3rd with no outs) and that Casey Blake error.

Just a bad team not doing the little things.

by Toxicadam on Jul 2, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Yea…little things. Like playing baseball.

by xrickx on Jul 2, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe its time to forget all i’ve learned and start hoping for more grit.

by KevinHD on Jul 2, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasn’t Carroll on third with no outs? Francisco hit a nubber on a 3-0 count. Then a strikeout, then Dellucci weak pop fly to left.

Jay reassure me here, there’s no way we DFA Marte, right? We haven’t lost all semblance of common sense have we?

by supermarioelia on Jul 2, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

I say no way, but I defer to the leader of the Soggy Bottom Boys.

by NickFantana on Jul 2, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know why we’d DFA him now, but who knows what crazy-ass thing they’ll come up with next.

by Jay on Jul 2, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course it would make no sense, but I’m just very afraid that in some twisted way they see him as part of the problem. It’s sad that I have such little faith in all things Shap, but I just don’t know anymore. I feel lost.

by supermarioelia on Jul 2, 2008 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless they get Laroche from LA in a deal, who is going to play 3B?

If they get LaPorta, he needs time in AAA and will play 1B or LF. Gamel won’t stay at 3B either.

by xrickx on Jul 2, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

As obvious as it seems to ship Blake, I wouldn’t put it past them to keep him aboard as some sort of team-building exercise. Geez I’m actually nervous for these moves. Just let it be over.

by supermarioelia on Jul 2, 2008 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno. This is kind of the fun part for me.

I have faith in this leadership group. Fausto will be back. I like Laffey. Cabrera will be back. Vic will get healthy. Things will be ok next year.

by xrickx on Jul 2, 2008 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Pride of North Olmsted gets 2 consecutive victories over the Indians.

His father called into WTAM post-game show last night and was a very nice guy and a long-time
Indians fan, who took his son to many games at the Jake.

by palcal on Jul 2, 2008 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

How much do we think these errors are bringing down Casey’s trade value? Sure he’s hitting, but teams have to be a tad concerned about his fielding, no? Can we DH him until he gets traded to stop the bleeding a bit?

by supermarioelia on Jul 2, 2008 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

Casey has a clause in his contract that prohibits him from playing anywhere but third if he doesn’t want to. Similar to Roger Dorn’s clause about calisthenics.

Il faut d'abord durer.

Grady for 40-40….. Over/Under?

by Brick. on Jul 2, 2008 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

They’re going to try him at closer, so chances are he stops running as to not injure himself.

Ponson et al gets 18 runs in support after Hank S. blasts the Yanks’ offense.
Of course, the Yanks were losing until the Rangers brought in a raw rookie in the 7th.

by palcal on Jul 3, 2008 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

Yes, you thought the Indians had a bad bullpen.

Madrigal, the raw rookie, had an ERA of ####### in the boxscore for a while. It’s since been updated to 162.00.

So I’m totally pumped to go to the Cell… expecting Jason Fucking Stanford or somebody to take the hill instead of the recently traded Sabathia…. well not quite. Fine. Still treated to Dellucci make outs twice with the bases loaded (the 2nd time I’m screaming at Blake to swing at absolutely anything to maybe get a gift hit and avoid Dellucci, nope, he walks, whatever).

Of course this is the time where Sabathia doesn’t quite have it in the early innings… no big deal, we seem to be stringing things together against Contreras. Well, not for long I guess. Francisco decides to swing on 3 and 0 with a runner on 3rd and nobody out… love to hear how he had the green light.

Wedge comes to the mound to finally relieve Sabathia… great, I can finally applaud the big left hander after he leaves the mound… uh not quite, I guess he decides to pull a Grady Little, let’s make him over-extend with a pitch after he’s thrown 120!!! So much for that opportunity in emeny territory.

Well, Grady homers again and I hit the road. To another fucking loss. There is no keel on this ship, there is no rudder, there is no pulse. Sweet dreams Tribe. Thanks for even making C.C’s probable last start another trash bin effort.

C.C. also gave up a big RBI double to Brian Anderson. He helped. Nothing to be angry about. This is baseball. 2008 sucks. 2007 was great. 2009 will be great too.

by xrickx on Jul 3, 2008 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for reminding me. Yes that’s true, after Blake through the 1st batter’s pitch into right field. And couldn’t field a glovable (albeit difficult) liner from Ramirez. He couldn’t even look C.C in the face after that. Laughable.

The bright side of tonight. The teams we want to keep winning to stay competitive and outbid each other for C.C., pretty much all did; Tampa, St. Louis, L.A., Yanks, Baltimore, Philly, Florida, and Minnesota. And Milwaukee’s up in the bottom of the 9th. Let the bidding begin.
