heh, I see Wedge banking on a lot of balls in play:
G. Sizemore
J. Carroll 2b
B. Francisco dh
C. Blake 1b
S. Choo lf
K. Shoppach
A. Marte 3b
F. Gutierrez rf
A. Cabrera ss
Best defensive lineup of the year?
i worry about francisco handling lined foul balls right at him when he’s in the on deck circle as DH
True….he’s last in the AL in Range Factor for DH’s. Of course, that’s a small sample size.

how come we never have wine discussions
by Gradyforpresident on Jul 22, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions
Because beer is better than wine, and we don’t have very many beer discussions.

I’m hope for both.
Any shiraz and Dortmunder, personally. Had a good oatmeal stout at the Winking Lizard yesterday.

Weihenstephaner? Paulaner? What about Ommegang Witte?

I get a little nervous about the silt on the bottom of the bottle.
But screw the Miller Lite Man Laws (as if Miller Lite has a say in it), I like an orange in my wheat beer.
Steel Nick
That silt is the healthiest thing in the bottle—nutrients. Filtering removes that stuff.
by PatBordersHelmet on Jul 22, 2008 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, what Pat said. Not silt, Vitamins. I usually let it all settle and then shoot it.
by NickFantana on Jul 22, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Besides which, I don’t think Weihenstephaner or Paulaner have much sediment. Reinheitsgebot and all that.

i’m gonna go with steel nick on this. inside, it’s not summer. on a beer garden, it’s different.
by Gradyforpresident on Jul 22, 2008 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions
I couldn’t disagree more vehemently. If we were in the same bar right now, we would shout about this for an hour.
by NickFantana on Jul 22, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, go on. Make your case.
I drink beers as my taste deems fit. If I could find a Christmas Ale right now you bet your ass I’d be savoring it.
Steel Nick
I can’t argue you over to my side, it’s a matter of taste. I’ve never enjoyed any dark, high-alcohol beer during the summer.
You, and apparently everyone else, do not have this problem. I really thought it was a generally accepted taste guideline, people I drink with seem to observe it, but LGT is telling me otherwise.
by NickFantana on Jul 22, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
i’ll drink a stout or a porter outside in 90% weather. it’s like how in india they drink hot tea all the time.

That reminds me of the Cliff Clavin explanation for why they drink cold beer in the winter. Something about its affect on the circulation in the body actually warming you up. Long and rambling….its was Cliff Clavin.
His reason for drinking cold beer in the summer? “What else are you going to do with it?”
I miss Cheers.
by Buckeye Brad on Jul 22, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I just can’t get behind this. If it’s cold outside I drink a full bodied beer, if it’s hot I’m drinking lagers at like a tenth of a degree above freezing.
I’m very temperature sensitive i guess.
Hey it’s gorgeous tonight here in chi-town, isn’t it?
OF COURSE. If I can be brutally honest, the best reason I have for wanting to come back to Cleveland, and/or going to Chicago, is to meet some of you guys and go out drinking. F baseball, I’m in for the drinking. If we can combine them, all the better.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that seasonals are seasonals for a reason, and I understand when stouts and wheats and whatnot are meant to be drank. You’re following the proper rules, don’t worry.
But I would also drink red wine with fish. Anarchy, I know. They should lock me up.
Steel Nick
All right, now I’m the following the proper rules guy. Not really where I wanted to end up. However, I will say that I’ll drink red wine with anything. So I’m with you on that.
I'll continue to try and relativize this by appealing to taste again.

I’m about 12 hours late to this conversation, but I’ve been drinking more wine of late (probably a girlfriend thing…also I like wine). I’m more generally a fan of full-bodied, spicy red wines (Shiraz and such), but I’ve had some really nice New Zealand Sav Blancs lately that have been great. Real grassy/bell peppery tastes. Great for the summer.
Be back in a few hours, I’m off to watch Dark Knight. Please spare me your thoughts on it haha.

So Russia’s development — doubly so east of the Urals — largely mirrors Africa’s: limited infrastructure primarily concerned with exploiting mineral deposits. Anything more holistic is simply too expensive to justify.
In contrast, China boasts substantial populations along its warm coasts. This access to transport allows China to industrialize more readily than Russia, but China shares easily crossed land borders with no natural trading partner. Its only serious option for international trade lies in maritime shipping. Yet, because land transport is "merely" difficult and not impossible, China must dedicate resources to a land-based military. This makes China militarily both vulnerable to — yet economically dependent upon — sea powers, both for access to raw materials and to ship its goods to market. The dominant naval power of today is not land-centric Russia, but the United States. To be economically successful China must at least have a civil and neutral relationship with the $14-trillion-economy-wielding and 11-aircraft-carrier-strike-group-toting United States. Russia barely even enters into China’s economic equation.

He has defined pitching to contact and letting a good defensive team help him. Several above average defensive plays have really helped.

This to me seems comparable to when Bowden brought back Dmitri Young 2/3rds of the way through last season. I didn’t like that move and I don’t like this one. Is either guy really a good bet to continue their production? I don’t really find many reasons to think so.

How many times is he going to throw over there? Good lord.
My last game I played in college, our pitcher threw over to first something like 12 consecutive times. The umpire finally screamed at him, telling him that if he threw over one more time and didn’t pick the guy off, he was going to throw him out of the game. Dan, our pitcher, nodded slowly and immediately whipped the ball to first, and picked off the DePaul dude. It was hysterical.
