Casey Blake: The Prettiest Girl at the Dance

"A lot of teams are looking at Casey Blake. The top suitors are the Mets with a clear need and prospects, while the Rays and Twins are two others that have taken a look. Blake plays multiple positions, shouldn’t cost top prospects, and will be a free agent at the end of the year. The Indians are said to be "laying back and listening on everyone," as one front-office type put it." -Carroll, B.P.

Man, it would be nice to get a solid AA prospect for Blake. A guy who can mash but doesn’t really have a position. Or a high OBP guy with speed. That way we can take Green/Lucroy instead of Brantley.

I wouldn’t mind getting a good AA pitcher, either

They’re not going to give you Niese, Aguilar or Kunz. Maybe Tim Lavigne (25 SO and 16 BB in 29 IP)? Or what about Mike Carp? They were high on him once, but Nick Evans seems their 1B prospect of choice. Carp’s been DH’ing in Binghamton, not exactly a useful position in Queens.

Niese is the guy I’d like….that’d obviously be a high price to pay for Blake, though.

Any bullpen arm that contributes positively in 2009 is worth it to me.

I’m of mixed mind on acquiring minor-league relievers. One one hand, the more the merrier (meaning, the more we have, the more likely we are to have a few develop into something decent). But we already have a lot of interesting arms in Buffalo, Akron, Kinston and Lake County. And unless a guy is really projected as being an elite bullpen arm, their most likely value is close to zero.

Let’s get someone with three option years remaining.

by Jay on Jul 23, 2008 11:07 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

then there would be no DFA’s to lament.

And anyway, we know how Shapiro feels about trading an everyday guy for a reliever.

But two relievers….

Wait a minute, that’s a Wayne Krivsky move.

No Wayne Krivsky moves allowed!

I did a Google image search for "Andy Marte." It turned up zero results.

What’s going to be hilarious is when Thompson and Bray end up contributing more to the Reds than Kearns and Lopez have for the Nats.

I remember well the initial outrage many Reds fans felt-and the astonishment among the MLB pundits-and yeah, that would be a very funny outcome.
