Kelvin's A+ Debut

Kinston already up 2-0. Mills, Wegz, Goedert, and Rivero all have singles.

Richard Martinez is already back in Kinston. I don't know what's up with him.

And he begins his Kinston career by striking out a guy named Boomer Whiting.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Any chance Chen-Ming Wang would name his first son, Boomer?

by Toxicadam on Jul 23, 2008 1:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And then walks a .252 hitter.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:28 PM EDT   0 recs

And then Weglarz apparently just drops the ball on the warning track.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:28 PM EDT   0 recs

And my thing freezes but Kelvin somehow escapes from 2nd and 3rd one out unscathed.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:34 PM EDT   0 recs

A K and an out, apparently. Also, Wegz got the E.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

KDLC has given up a run, largely because of lousy defense. He did pick somebody off.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:48 PM EDT   0 recs

I am following this excitedly. think he has a chance at top 100 next year?

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Ehh, I don’t put much stock into the BA rankings. It’s really hard for me to process and compare all the players across systems and I think it is for them to as well. I’m never terribly impressed with their perception of Indians’ players.

That said, I think next season we’ll have 5-6 top 100 guys: The Door, Wegz, Mills, Rondon, KDLC, whoever we get for Casey, maybe Hodges, Huff.

The system has really turned over quickly and impressively over the last 18 months.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed. I thought they messed up big time not including Weglarz last year. Law, however, definitely included him in his top 100, for whatever that’s worth.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You think we’ll get a Top 100 guy for Casey? I think that is a bit high. Am thinking more like a 150-200 type player (if the rankings went that low).

by talonk on Jul 23, 2008 12:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Honestly if we can’t maybe it’d be a better idea to just let him walk and get the picks.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I think we can get a 75-125 style guy.

Honestly, it’s pretty hard to distinguish between guy 130 and guy 90.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You think Green/Brantley/Lucroy(?) would qualify?

by bewwolv on Jul 23, 2008 1:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I’d actually forgotten about that.

LuCroy, yes. Green, unlikely. Brantley, no. Not with the injury issues.

Man I want LuCroy.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Kelvin gets his 3rd K, 2nd on his slow breaking ball.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Boo it’s loopy? I was hoping it’d be tighter. What’s his best secondary pitch.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:51 PM EDT   0 recs

I think it’s that curve. He apparently is working guys inside, a lot. Everything is jam shots.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hopefully he works on his changeup then. So little room for margin of error with slow breaking balls.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 1:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, I’m not an authority. He might have a good one.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

http://www.theclevelandfan.com/article_detail.php?id=3085

This says he has a plus changeup. Good to hear.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 1:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wegz hammers one foul, 400+ feet apparently, then just misses a single going the other way, foul, then walks.

That’s Weglarz in a nutshell, I hope.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Goedert doubles, scoring Weglarz.

Weglarz has decent speed apparently. He tries to steal a base every 2 or 3 games, which is hilarious.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Dunn had some decent wheels in the minors as well.

Am I saying Weglarz is the next Dunn? You betcha.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Let’s get Dunn and have a 2/3 quarterback outfield.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Why don’t we ever hear about Grady’s football mentality?

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Because he doesn’t suck. Football mentality is a way to speak highly of a guy without the numbers to back it up.

by Jay on Jul 23, 2008 3:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We should rank the euphemisms on a suckiness scale. Does a player with a “football mentality” suck more or less than one “with grit” or one “who just knows how to win”?

by FredOx on Jul 24, 2008 9:23 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I would say the football mentality guy sucks the worst. The one who “knows how to win” sucks less than that but sucks a bit more than the guy with grit.

Guys with grit kind of suck, but they don’t totally suck unless they also have a football mentality.

by Jay on Jul 24, 2008 3:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It was a somewhat rhetorical question, but I’ve enjoyed the aftermath. I have a golf mentality.

by fleerdon on Jul 25, 2008 7:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought he walked?

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Who?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nicky.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 1:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nicky walks to first, Goedert doubles, Nick goes all the way around to score.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yea milb.com has it that he singled.

by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 1:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think I’m right. Maybe.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Johnny Drennen apparently has broken his hand and is done for the year.

Real exciting, Jay.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Wait. I’m thinking of someone else. Drennen just hit a homerun. I don’t know what they were talking about.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

maybe Jason Denham?

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That’s probably it.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hahah. Mills tried to start a first to short to first DP and got no outs.

KDLC is getting hosed.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Please tell me the starting pitcher for Potomac has the nickname: “cool ranch”

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:11 PM EDT   0 recs

Their LF is named Dee Brown. It’s killing me.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And then JG succesfully gets the 3rd to first DP. Well done. KDLC escapes.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Can we not refer to him as KDLC. Makes him sound like a Christian radio station. I prefer Lord Kelvin or Absolute Zero.

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I sort of like KDLC. It’s such unusual initials. And way easier to type.

HOMERUN JOHNNY DRENNEN

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

First of the season after 13 last year.

Drennen is having a historically weird year.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he began the season clearly working on his plate approach and raising his OBP. In April, he put up a .410 OBP and had a 1:1 K:BB ratio (14:14). Last season he had twice as many Ks and BBs. With that, I could understand the lack of power. But since then he’s regressed back to his old self minus the hints of power he showed last season. All in all, not good.

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, it’s bad.

I’ve heard all this before and it makes sense but it’s still really weird. For a guy to totally remake himself at that age for a month, then regress and lose power? At that age?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mills and Wegz both fly out.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:17 PM EDT   0 recs

Goedert makes a nice play for out number 1.

He’s apparently becoming a good to very good third basemen.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:20 PM EDT   0 recs

he’d be a lot more valuable if he were become a very good 2B

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No joke.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

becoming

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Let’s go 2010 Indians, let’s go! [clap, clap]

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Zero gets his 4th K of the game to end the inning. They went in order for the first time today.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Goedert gets another hit.

3-3 now.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:26 PM EDT   0 recs

good day for him

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It’s a fun day overall to being listening to the K-tribe.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Raise your hand if you remembered Bryan Bullington’s on teh 40-man until 2 minutes ago.

(keeps hand lowered)

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:28 PM EDT   0 recs

He’s on the 40?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

So, does Reid Santos get to keep his roster spot this off-season?

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:32 PM EDT   0 recs

And, while I’m talking minor leaguers with myself, holy BB:K, Scott Lewis.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

look at those numbers across his entire minor league career

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He’s everything except efficient and healthy. And now he’s starting to be those things as well.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

for the lazy…in 316.1 IP, 310 Ks and 74 BBs.

At AA, 181.2 IP, 154 Ks, 39 BBs

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Buckeye.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

just wait till this year’s draft crop starts producing: putnam, reckneggel, abraham…it’ll be wolverines all the time

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I have no idea who any of those people are. The only ‘08 draftees I know are Chisenhall and Jeremie Tice.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m kind of surprised Trey Haley broke his Rice commitment for us, but then a million’s a million. I’d do it too.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

2008 stats (at Michigan):

Nate Recknagel: .368/.465/.751, 23 HRs, 33 BBs, 30 Ks
Adam Abraham: .352/.415/.528
Zack Putnam: 9-0, 2.58 ERA, 76.2 IP, 78K, 23 BBs

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We drafted all these players?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

did they all sign?

by talonk on Jul 23, 2008 3:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Abraham’s already playing, and I think Putnam and Recknagel have supposedly signed for over-slot money yet to be announced

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 3:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And in 2008: 5:33 BB:K in 47 IP. 9 H/9. 1 HR this season.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ruh roh.

De La Cruz has a bloody nose or something?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:38 PM EDT   0 recs

nose candy alert

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Is it wrong that I almost wish we had an insanely talented cokehead on the team?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Carlos Baerga blew K didn’t he?

by joeee on Jul 23, 2008 2:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Stays in the game. No one knows what was wrong with him. “Maybe a leg or an arm” the commentator says.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Another K for Zero. 5 on the day. He’s through 6.

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:41 PM EDT   0 recs

There’s a day game today?!?

by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 1:45 PM EDT   0 recs

isn’t the afternoon getting better and better

by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Adam, is Scott Lewis cup-of-Joe material this fall, assuming he’s healthy?

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:46 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmm, I’m going to make some coffee.

by fleerdon on Jul 23, 2008 1:46 PM EDT to parent up
