Kelvin's A+ Debut
Kinston already up 2-0. Mills, Wegz, Goedert, and Rivero all have singles.
Richard Martinez is already back in Kinston. I don't know what's up with him.

And he begins his Kinston career by striking out a guy named Boomer Whiting.

Any chance Chen-Ming Wang would name his first son, Boomer?

And then Weglarz apparently just drops the ball on the warning track.

And my thing freezes but Kelvin somehow escapes from 2nd and 3rd one out unscathed.

KDLC has given up a run, largely because of lousy defense. He did pick somebody off.
by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:48 PM EDT 0 recs
I am following this excitedly. think he has a chance at top 100 next year?
by Joe. on Jul 23, 2008 12:49 PM EDT 0 recs
Ehh, I don’t put much stock into the BA rankings. It’s really hard for me to process and compare all the players across systems and I think it is for them to as well. I’m never terribly impressed with their perception of Indians’ players.
That said, I think next season we’ll have 5-6 top 100 guys: The Door, Wegz, Mills, Rondon, KDLC, whoever we get for Casey, maybe Hodges, Huff.
The system has really turned over quickly and impressively over the last 18 months.

Agreed. I thought they messed up big time not including Weglarz last year. Law, however, definitely included him in his top 100, for whatever that’s worth.

You think we’ll get a Top 100 guy for Casey? I think that is a bit high. Am thinking more like a 150-200 type player (if the rankings went that low).

Honestly if we can’t maybe it’d be a better idea to just let him walk and get the picks.

Yeah, I think we can get a 75-125 style guy.
Honestly, it’s pretty hard to distinguish between guy 130 and guy 90.

Yeah, I’d actually forgotten about that.
LuCroy, yes. Green, unlikely. Brantley, no. Not with the injury issues.
Man I want LuCroy.

Boo it’s loopy? I was hoping it’d be tighter. What’s his best secondary pitch.

I think it’s that curve. He apparently is working guys inside, a lot. Everything is jam shots.

Hopefully he works on his changeup then. So little room for margin of error with slow breaking balls.

Wegz hammers one foul, 400+ feet apparently, then just misses a single going the other way, foul, then walks.
That’s Weglarz in a nutshell, I hope.
by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:53 PM EDT 0 recs
Goedert doubles, scoring Weglarz.
Weglarz has decent speed apparently. He tries to steal a base every 2 or 3 games, which is hilarious.
by afh4 on Jul 23, 2008 12:58 PM EDT 0 recs
Dunn had some decent wheels in the minors as well.
Am I saying Weglarz is the next Dunn? You betcha.

Why don’t we ever hear about Grady’s football mentality?

Because he doesn’t suck. Football mentality is a way to speak highly of a guy without the numbers to back it up.

We should rank the euphemisms on a suckiness scale. Does a player with a “football mentality” suck more or less than one “with grit” or one “who just knows how to win”?

I would say the football mentality guy sucks the worst. The one who “knows how to win” sucks less than that but sucks a bit more than the guy with grit.
Guys with grit kind of suck, but they don’t totally suck unless they also have a football mentality.

Real exciting, Jay.

Hahah. Mills tried to start a first to short to first DP and got no outs.
KDLC is getting hosed.

Please tell me the starting pitcher for Potomac has the nickname: “cool ranch”
by APV on Jul 23, 2008 1:11 PM EDT 0 recs
And then JG succesfully gets the 3rd to first DP. Well done. KDLC escapes.

Can we not refer to him as KDLC. Makes him sound like a Christian radio station. I prefer Lord Kelvin or Absolute Zero.

he began the season clearly working on his plate approach and raising his OBP. In April, he put up a .410 OBP and had a 1:1 K:BB ratio (14:14). Last season he had twice as many Ks and BBs. With that, I could understand the lack of power. But since then he’s regressed back to his old self minus the hints of power he showed last season. All in all, not good.

Yeah, it’s bad.
I’ve heard all this before and it makes sense but it’s still really weird. For a guy to totally remake himself at that age for a month, then regress and lose power? At that age?

Goedert makes a nice play for out number 1.
He’s apparently becoming a good to very good third basemen.
