From Castrovince…..
This has nothing to do with anything, really, but Masa Kobayashi is wearing a T-shirt that says, “I’m huge in Japan.” It was given to him on this trip by Paul Byrd.
I liked the lineup better last night i think. Who pinch hits for marte tonight with the game on the line?

Why do you ask this? It’s sooooooooo obvious.
Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.
I feel stupid. The water in mexico is very bad. That’s it.

Good call. Seems like an odd time for a day off. Then again . . . i feel safe in saying showcasing the bearded one to other teams may not be wedge’s top priority.

Probably just giving Garko more rope with which to hang himself and grease the skids for his impending stay in Buffalo.

I am actually sitting in a study room right now. afh and APV hooked me in w/ Kelvin’s debut, and I stuck around for the gamethread. I’m gonna be here all night.
My lab closes at 8 unfortunately, but there’s always tomorrow. I did enjoy re-reading that thread.

Am I allowed to avoid the non-drinking rules today? ;)
If so, let’s go Grady, Jhonny, Benny, Choo … all starting for me today in my fantasy league
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

by woodsmeister on Jul 23, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
It is a deep league … 10 owners … All positions plus 2 UTIl and a DH with 9 pitchers
I also have Fausto and Hafner
Actually, tied in 3rd place right now …
When I said 10 owners, meant for the AL … have same 10 owners and we all have NL teams too (we moved Pitt to AL to balace the leagues
right now I am using Varitek, Laroche, Roberts, Jhonny and Bautista in the IF, Benny, Grady and Abreu in the OF
Grady and Jhonny are roster worthy in any mixed league. The others are not a stretch in an AL-only league.

General questions about Blake:
Is he an unrestricted FA next season?
If yes, what kind of contract could he get? I would imagine it would be a multi year deal for 20-30% than he made in 2008.
If yes, than we would be incredibly retarded for not trading him.
Isn’t the main question a comparison between a prospect and the possible picks we will get if he is a type A free agent?
¡Free Chan Perry!
by TheVanillaGorilla on Jul 23, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
FA, yes. There are minor league free agents, but there’s no type of restricted free agency in baseball.
He probably will find a team that will go 3 years, $15-18M. Maybe 2 years, $14M.
I love afternoon games. They make me so much less productive.

would be the 2nd to no-hit the Royals this year. That’s not good.

Looks like a script I have seen before. Tribe gets to a pitcher early, then climbs into a hole for the next 8 innings.
Meh.
Obviously, the Indians have not learned the first rule of holes: when you’re in one, stop digging.

Do you think Shapiro’s been drawing his free agents out of a hat?
by PatBordersHelmet on Jul 23, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Dellucci hit the crap out of righties in the handful of seasons leading up to his deal. While 3 years may have been too long, the guy just crapped himself.
Paul Byrd’s been pretty nifty. Beats Mark Mulder, Jon Leiber, and Matt Clement. I also consider Blake, Howry, and Betancourt free agents.
Giles was a good target, and Hoffman would have been nice at the back end. The Indians can’t afford “sure-things,” but they’ve targeted decent talent.
And I’m here.
What happened to Laffy? Don’t tell me I’m going to have to throw away this HOF plaque I smelted in June?
Anybody check Peralta’s hot/cold chart? Seven of the nine hitting zones are “cold”.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
Hafner’s a dead issue. I still think that Garko’s a ML ballplayer. Peralta’s future is a third – but probably not with the Tribe.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
He’s not going to win a gold glove at 3B either. He’s not hurting the Indians with his defense at SS. If he was, do you think the FO would really leave him there? The gain in his defense at 3B won’t offset the loss in his offense (SS vs 3B).
He’s not getting any younger. I think I see a loss of mobility over the last 2-3 years and I don’t see him getting it back. With time he’s gonna hafta move. And yeah, I think that our FO misses a few things an makes an occasional mistake.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
The reason the Indians have twice put together a 90-win team is because they don’t make decisions based on what they “think they see.”
A loss in mobility … for a 26 year old? Really? must have been an off-season car accident or something.
And oh yeah talonk, here’s a concept that seems to elude most site residents here: not everybody ages at the same rate.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
No duh Sherlock … but as a glorified physician that you are, you must admit that a guy aging that quickly from 23-26 is extremely uncommon.
Stop pulling crud out of your rear. Am sick and tired of it.
good, maybe you’ll actually defend your rattionale’s for once … instead of being a blowhard

Why is a 20+ HR 80+ RBI right handed 3B such a liability, offensively? Im sure there are other plausible SS options, not the least of which is drubs if he pulls his head out of his asshole.

Ok. So Kendrick has destroyed the Indians this series, and they’ve only pitched him away. Perhaps its time to start pitching IN.
I think this season is a hard lesson for me in terms of overvaluing young players. We should’ve played it a lot looser, it seems, in trying to get Haren.
I’ve seen it happen to Fausto as well …. even if we had all the rangy guys around the diamond, there are still holes that ground balls find. It just happens.
We do. And probably too much. But it does play a role. For instance, our run differential is +11 and KC’s is -83, and we’re half a game ahead of them.

ok this is getting silly now.. 11 hits now take this poor kid out of the game he doesnt have it today
ive never thought id see a baseball team try and lose a game on purpose but its actually happening rite before my eyes
Is it possible to outsource the play-by-play managerial decisions to someone else and let Wedge concentrate on cultivating the team’s grittiness?
I can.
Defense A: This bullpen is terrible, especially when stretched. If you’re trying to win, you might as well see if you can scratch one more inning out of Laffey. He hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in an inning. It’s not like he totally imploded.
Defense B: Might as well see if Laffey can get out on a good note. His pitch count is low and the season is lost. He needs to have some success or, alternately, learn how to deal with not having his best stuff.
Defense C: Because who gives a shit, that’s why.

I always hated the fact a manager will pull a pitcher and then have the new guy intentionally walk the first batter.
If you are gonna walk the guy, have the guy who is getting pulled do the walking fro crying out loud!!
I get this feeling a scary time machine is coming up….

Makes me wonder what the highest ERA in MLB history is for anyone who has pitched at least at many innings as Mastny this season.
He’s only thown 9IP this season? If that’s true then I’ve grossly overestimated how much he’s played this year. I thought I remembered seeing him pitch more often I guess.
I love how quickly the mood goes from:
“Dangit, bad luck for Laffey! These are all outs that turning into hits.”
to
“THIS IS RIDICULOUS HOW COULD YOU LEAVE SUCH AN INEFFECTIVE STATER IN!”
I think the Nationals would be happy to trade us Alex Escobar – he’s currently playing in AAA Columbus.
