Anybody see the picture of Francisco Rodriguez in the latest SI?
Baseball players look so weird without their hats.
hammy knows it: “He’s not ready to be a #3 hitter in the big leagues, but…”
Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.
I like leadoff Grady better than 3-hole Grady. Leadoff Grady gets more ABs than anyone on the team, as well as more of an opportunity, at least in the 1st inning, to start rallies rather than come up with no one on and 2 outs.

Interesting. I would like to see more discussion about this, with everyone chiming in with their own views and counter arguments.
Me, too. I want Grady to be able to bat in both the one and three holes. Like in T-ball, we’d get a designated runner.
I can see the rationale behind that, but conversely, if he bats in the 3-hole, it’s likely he’ll have more people in front of him to drive in via the long ball and the XBHs. After all, in most lineups, even in the Yankees’ and Red Sox’s lineups, your weakest hitters, and consequently, your lowest OBPs players, will be in the 7-9 holes.
Leaving Grady up in the 1-hole will likely lead to fewer people being on base, and consequently, fewer people to drive in and fewer people on the HRs he hits.
Just my 2 cents – no offense to those who prefer Grady in the leadoff spot. I’m one who would rather have him in the 3-hole or even the 5-hole or 6-hole (and Victor in the 3-hole and Hafner, if he ever finds his old self again, in the 5-hole). This is of course presuming Crowe and/or Constanza, or guys who project to be leadoff hitters with speed, emerge and force the issue.
Otherwise, Grady will do in the leadoff spot, but I really think his power would be more beneficial lower than the leadoff spot.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
This is going to have to go into the graveyard of topics, soon. As I think I said last night, the problem is that we have no one who can get on base consistently in front of Grady if we move him down. So we’re talking about the difference between solo HR with no out and solo HRs with two out.

Great play by (our) Cabrera!
I was just wondering – would the Twins have interest in Jamey Carroll, and if so, what could we get in return, realistically? Just curious.

I wish, but realistically, somehow, I doubt it.
Though, if they feel Liriano is being a problem, we’ll gladly take him off their hands! :-)

That’s getting closer in value! :-)
Just kidding – no offense intended, but I just thought that Carroll might be a quick option for them, since they have less than 24 hours to make a trade before it can be blocked and this injury sort of came out of the blue for them. Plus, besides being relatively cheap, he has an option for next season as well.
I like Carroll, including his speed and his ability to be a tough out at the plate, but if the Twins were willing to give up something of value for him, I’d be willing to listen, at least.
Just my 2 cents.

I’ve liked watching Shoppach play, and sometimes even Carroll. This team isn’t entirely unwatchable.
Yeah, In a tough season you have to have something to hold onto. 1986 it was Cory Snyder. 1995 was Joey “Rehab” Belle. Most of the late 90’s and the early new decade was Vizquel (and Alomar was awesome to watch while it lasted). I tend to focus on the positive, like this inning.
when you wrap up the division in July? it was great!

I’ve developed an unhealthy hatred for Ryan Garko. I would not be opposed to just giving him away in order to make the Victor-LaPorta-Shoppach decision that much simpler.
No offense, but isn’t that a bit of a quick reaction – last year, he was the exact opposite. How do we know which is the real Garko, or if he’s somewhere inbetween.
No offense also, LaPorta needs more time – he may be a blue-chip prospect, but he’s NOT ready right now, and won’t be until sometime next year – Garko has at least that long (unless someone really wants him) to prove himself, and chances are, he’ll likely get it.
Just my 2 cents.

Anyone post anything yet about Manny to the Marlins and Bay to the Red Sox?
LGT's resident beer connaisseur.
I just heard the Manny to Miami talks were “serious”.
“They haven’t asked me for anything,” Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com’s Enrique Rojas on the phone from Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Angels matchup on Wednesday night.
“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me,” Ramirez said. “During my years here I’ve seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn’t want them to try to turn the fans against them.
Hamilton mentioned that the talks were reportedly serious – of course, I’ll believe it when the trade actually goes down; there’s been “serious” rumors about Manny before, only to turn out to be nothing.
Supposedly, Hermida or Willingham are the return package (or part of it, at least), but neither have Manny’s bat, so it makes me wonder whether the Red Sox will really pull the trigger, especially since Ortiz’s health is still a bit in question.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Hamilton just mentioned about whether the Tigers would have interest in Byrd, since their starting rotation, outside of Galarraga, and Verlander to a lesser extent, has been very volatile.
The Tigers’ defense is definitely self-destructing – fortunately for us! :-)

Young players need playing time – you also need to consider their positions in the lineup. As Hamilton mentioned, I don’t think anyone is expecting Francisco or Choo to be manning the 3rd and 5th spots in a ML lineup, but they’ve done fairly well, considering. Same with Gutierrez in the 2nd spot – I don’t think anyone is expecting him to be there long-term, not with his long swing and slumps.
Just imagine what they would be like in the bottom part of the order, 7-9 (two of those three and Marte there). I smell “potential” there. :-)
Just my 2 cents.

So seriously, is this guy gonna turn into something or what?
If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.
Remains to be seen – my main point from the other thread is that the OF picture is wide open. Heck, we’ve had Jason Michaels, David Dellucci, and Trot Nixon as our veteran hitters, and none of them excelled.
And, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll either pay for a premium offensive OFer or two, and trading away several prospects for someone like Bay (who I’m not convinced about being “premium”) is probably not likely either, so you’re essentially looking in the bargain bin, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
Therefore, Crowe does have an opportunity, and if he only does what Andrew thinks he can do optimally, that will still be an upgrade over what we’ve been putting out there over the past few years. Additionally, our 2005 offense was aided by Crisp, and Crowe COULD be that type of player eventually. If Crowe can be that leadoff-type hitter we haven’t had since the days of Lofton, with good plate discipline and that base-stealing presence that pitchers will have to pay attention to, Crowe will have done what the Indians were moreless expecting from him when they drafted him. Plus, at the very least, he’ll provide additional time for guys like LaPorta and Weglarz to fully develop at the Minor League level.
Only time will tell.
Just my 2 cents.

I’ve never understood commentators making fun of seats in the home team’s stadium.
Manning and Underwood are talking about how these people in the nosebleeds can’t see the plate. How is that possibly a good thing to say?
I like the upper deck behind the homeplate area.
I remember last year I was out in the bleachers I got burnt to death, 90+ degree day. There was no one in the upperdeck behind homeplate so we decided to finish the game up there to get out of the sun. I almost wanted to go to the store and buy a sweatshirt.
The upper deck behind homeplate is what Jay always pimps as the best seats in the park. I tried them at the Cell and was pretty impressed.
my favorite place to sit also.
you can see all the players, just not where the ball crosses the plate.
I believe they raised prices this year, but I’d rather pay 18-20 to sit in the upper deck and be in the infield than a couple bucks less and sit in the bleachers.
Last year I sat in the bleachers in the very far right seats (nearest to center field). They were fantastic because you could see the plate exactly and tell where every pitch was. If I ever sit in the bleachers again I want to sit in that area.

FJM had a post a year or two ago where they made fun of an article that critcized Adam Dunn for not hitting sac flies when he was up with a guy on third and less than two outs. They pointed out that something like 30% of the time that he failed to hit a sac fly, it was because he hit a home run.

Earlier in the game I expressed frustration when the Indians stranded a runner on third with fewer than two outs. FredOx showed me where I could find data on the subject (thanks Fred!). I made a quick table showing the percentage of runners that score with fewer than two outs as a function of team in the AL in 2008. While the Indians aren’t great, it turns out they are only a bit below league average:
Percentage Team
78.41 White Sox
71.60 Red Sox
70.27 Yankees
69.87 Tigers
69.34 A’s
68.72 Rangers
68.24 Twins
68.22 Angels
64.57 Indians
63.18 Rays
61.76 Royals
60.91 Orioles
60.83 Mariners
58.97 Blue Jays
66.78 League Average
