My work has tickets, two, free, to this game.

My boss sort of said I could go, not really. Bleach.

I can’t read the line-up in paragraph form. To ESPN.com I go.

Big Picture Checklist

Fausto gets back on track. 6 innings, 2 BB’s or less.
Andy Marte has a significant contribution
Grady adds to his 40/40 quest
Gootz and Garko put together good AB’s.

by Toxicadam on Jul 31, 2008 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

yep. he’s number two after fausto for me.

by Brick. on Jul 31, 2008 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Griffey officially traded to the ChiSox. It’s a shame I have to now apply my hatred of the ChiSox to Griffey Jr.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t really understand that trade from the Reds’ perspective. Apparently they’re paying out the rest of Griffey’s contract for this year & all they get back are two below-average major leaguers?

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on Jul 31, 2008 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven’t seen any of the return players for the Reds. Who are they? That Anderson dude I’m guessing.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess it was just a pitty move by the Reds to let Griffey get a final run at a World Series. It’s not like Griffey is superstar caliber now anyway. He’s average to slightly above average as far as NL outfielders go, and now he’s moving to a superior league. I don’t really see how he fits into that line-up either with Konerko/Thome at 1b and DH, and Dye and Quentin at the corner OF spots. Is he going to play CF again? That would be a train wreck.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as I like Griffey, I’d be amazingly pissed if my club did a pity trade and lost $4 mil in the process. What a joke.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on Jul 31, 2008 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Just goes to show you why the Reds are a perpetual last place club.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i’d rather take low level prospects and pick up his salary than the trash they got

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 31, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

But they ARE paying his salary, that’s what I don’t get. The Reds are trading Griffey, Jr. plus $4 mill or so to the White Sox for Nick Masset (average-to-crappy reliever) and Danny Richar (crappy-to-less-than-crappy 2B). I suppose this just reinforces how good the haul we got for Blake was.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

Wonder where Hammy is getting these rumors from. i’ve heard Street linked to the ChiSox, but not in a 4-team deal.

It looks to be down. At least I couldn’t get on.

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox are targeting reliever Huston Street in trade talks. However, they might not have the prospects to pull it off. GM Kenny Williams may have to include a third or even fourth team to find a group of players Billy Beane likes. Street, 25 in August, is under team control through 2010

Jhonny Peralta: Real Good.

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

While we’re on the subject I figure I’ll ask this question. Where would you place Jhonny in the overall spectrum of current MLB shortstops? He has to be top 10 I think. Let’s make a list of who’s better.

HanRam
Michael Young

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now or for the future?

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m saying how many would you rather have than Jhonny. So it’s ok to factor in net present value.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Not Michael Young. He keeps getting older.

HanRam
Reyes

And then I think it’s a push with Hardy, Drew and Peralta. Yuney could sneak in there but probably not.

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Rollins, too. But this just shows actually how lucky we are to have such a sweet SS. Jhonny has really served as a more than adequate replacement for Omar.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i have no interest in rollins at all

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 31, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Jimmy Rollins is incredibly overrated. Go look at his numbers.

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Career avgs over 162 games: 16 homers, 71 RBI, 68 XBH, 37 steals, .277 avg, .772 OPS. He’s a pretty good fielder too. Of course it could be possible that his best years are already behind him, but those are certainly very good numbers out of the SS position. I’d take that for sure.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s had an OPS+ over 100 three times. Three times! In a 9 year career!

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

So you’re saying a few good seasons inflated the averages. Gotcha. I didn’t look too far into the variance of his seasons. So minus Rollins. Which still proves the point: Jhonny is superawesome.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh, Young is 5 & a half years older, doesn’t hit as well, and is WAY WAY overpaid (5 years/$80 mil!).

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on Jul 31, 2008 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Too old. Tulowitzki probably goes in that roup with Hardy and Drew but his problems this year are pretty bad.

by afh4 on Jul 31, 2008 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Rollins is only 29. I always wonder why age is emphasized so much for baseball (at least like it’s as important a factor as in football or basketball). Baseball is a game old men can play and play well. Even tough positions like SS. Just look at Ripken, Larkin, Omar, and numerous others who have played very well into their late 30s.

by obobcatu on Jul 31, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

this is begging for numbers

by Gradyforpresident on Jul 31, 2008 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Number of SS since 1956 with an OPS of .700 or more after age 35 : six.

Omar three times, Ozzie Smith twice, Luis Aparicio twice, Cal Ripken, Barry Larkin, Alvin Dark.

by FredOx on Jul 31, 2008 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re also comparing Rollins to a bunch of HoF-caliber players. There’s a lot of guys you could compare him to who totally flamed out in their 30s.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on Jul 31, 2008 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

12:36 p.m.: Yankees pursuing Byrd?
The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, are “kicking around” the idea of adding Indians righty Paul Byrd, according to major-league sources.

As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the Yankees and Indians had not yet exchanged names, but a deal could come together quickly if the Yankees decided to pursue it.

The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies. For the Yankees, Byrd would be a potential upgrade over right-hander Darrell Rasner.

by Brick. on Jul 31, 2008 12:45 PM EDT reply actions

If Byrd would be a type-B free agent, the Indians are probably better off just grabbing an upper level talent from the Yankees.

And here’s how ridiculous the Elias free agent rankings are…. The following stats are used to rank pitchers: Total games (total starts + 0.5 * total relief appearances), IP, Wins, W-L Percentage, ERA, Strikeouts

Its a good question, not sure how and why I became a Tribe fan, started regularly following them via the internet in 2003, prior to that used to check their results in the newspaper. Tribe are now one of my two real sporting passions.

I have never been to a baseball game or ever played it.

That’s awesome man. Glad to have you on board and rooting for the good guys. You should plan a trip at some point (especially with the weak dollar) and take in a game at Jacob’s Field. It’s a wonderful experience and I think you would really enjoy the ambiance of the ballpark. Baseball is a marvelous game and sitting at the ballpark relaxing is one of my favorite hobbies.

Updated 1:21 p.m.: Yankees unlikely to land Byrd

Barring a last-minute change, the Indians are unlikely to trade right-hander Paul Byrd before the 4 p.m. ET non-waiver deadline.

The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, “kicked around” the idea of adding Byrd, but their interest appears minimal, according to major-league sources.

The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies.

Byrd, 5-10 with a 4.93 ERA, could be moved during the August trading period. He is unlikely to be claimed on waivers due to his $7.5 million salary.

by Denver Tribe Fan on Jul 31, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t figure out why he’d necessarily clear waivers—in August he’ll only be owed, what, a couple million? It’s not like he’s totally worthless, I could see someone trying to claim him to block a trade & potentially get some average-ish innings for the remainder of the season.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on Jul 31, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

By August, most teams have filled their budget. Less teams are in contention. And Byrd doesn’t have to clear waivers. If a team claims the player, you can work out a deal with that team (assuming the player you want in return clears waivers; more likely, Cleveland would be getting a non-40man player, so the returning player clearing waivers is a non necessity).

You’re kidding, right?

"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter

by Denver Tribe Fan on Jul 31, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope – the way this bullpen is pitching, I honestly question whether a 4-run lead is enough to win, even going into the 9th. Check that – now I question whether a 5-run lead is enough.

No, I meant, “you’re kidding” as in, there’s now WAY 4 (or 5) runs is enough (at least not enough to make it feel safe).

The indians did a double steal? The indians?

by oxforddave on Jul 31, 2008 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

No, Grady stole second, and the ball got away, so Droobz came home.

"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter

by Denver Tribe Fan on Jul 31, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what ESPN is calling it. I thought Grady had the base stolen easily and that the error allowed Cabrera to score, but it looks like they’re not giving him the SB. Conspiracy to stop 40/40.

mlb boxscore is showing the steal

by oaksterdam on Jul 31, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

If Grady goes 40/40 this year, doesn’t Jay-Z host a big party at his 40/40 club in NY to “induct him” and frame his jersey?

I think that’s right. I need to get an invite to that

See, was that so hard?

"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter

by Denver Tribe Fan on Jul 31, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, it is not hard. Marte looked great in the field today. I would love for him to be superb (Inge-like) in the field and then a .230/.300/.400 batting line will be more than adequate. Just give me some reason to believe.

by oxforddave on Jul 31, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that definitely makes it more palatable to wait for his batting to come around.

by ASP on Jul 31, 2008 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Just got back from the game. Treated myself to the best seats I ever had to a game (front row, section 151), soaked in a perfect afternoon, joined in on some busting of on-deck balls and had an absolutely amazing time. It was kind of like rediscovering all of the things that made me fall in love with this game in the first place.

Oh, and we won too. Yay!
