Big Picture Checklist
Fausto gets back on track. 6 innings, 2 BB’s or less.
Andy Marte has a significant contribution
Grady adds to his 40/40 quest
Gootz and Garko put together good AB’s.
Griffey officially traded to the ChiSox. It’s a shame I have to now apply my hatred of the ChiSox to Griffey Jr.
I don’t really understand that trade from the Reds’ perspective. Apparently they’re paying out the rest of Griffey’s contract for this year & all they get back are two below-average major leaguers?
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I haven’t seen any of the return players for the Reds. Who are they? That Anderson dude I’m guessing.
I guess it was just a pitty move by the Reds to let Griffey get a final run at a World Series. It’s not like Griffey is superstar caliber now anyway. He’s average to slightly above average as far as NL outfielders go, and now he’s moving to a superior league. I don’t really see how he fits into that line-up either with Konerko/Thome at 1b and DH, and Dye and Quentin at the corner OF spots. Is he going to play CF again? That would be a train wreck.
yeah, i’d rather take low level prospects and pick up his salary than the trash they got
by Gradyforpresident on Jul 31, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
But they ARE paying his salary, that’s what I don’t get. The Reds are trading Griffey, Jr. plus $4 mill or so to the White Sox for Nick Masset (average-to-crappy reliever) and Danny Richar (crappy-to-less-than-crappy 2B). I suppose this just reinforces how good the haul we got for Blake was.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
So they ARE giving him third now? WTF?
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

Wonder where Hammy is getting these rumors from. i’ve heard Street linked to the ChiSox, but not in a 4-team deal.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.
According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox are targeting reliever Huston Street in trade talks. However, they might not have the prospects to pull it off. GM Kenny Williams may have to include a third or even fourth team to find a group of players Billy Beane likes. Street, 25 in August, is under team control through 2010
So, on G’s to Gents, the big drama is that somebody spit on someone else’s bed. That is some of “real disrespect.”
While we’re on the subject I figure I’ll ask this question. Where would you place Jhonny in the overall spectrum of current MLB shortstops? He has to be top 10 I think. Let’s make a list of who’s better.
HanRam
Michael Young
Not Michael Young. He keeps getting older.
HanRam
Reyes
And then I think it’s a push with Hardy, Drew and Peralta. Yuney could sneak in there but probably not.
Rollins, too. But this just shows actually how lucky we are to have such a sweet SS. Jhonny has really served as a more than adequate replacement for Omar.
i have no interest in rollins at all

Career avgs over 162 games: 16 homers, 71 RBI, 68 XBH, 37 steals, .277 avg, .772 OPS. He’s a pretty good fielder too. Of course it could be possible that his best years are already behind him, but those are certainly very good numbers out of the SS position. I’d take that for sure.
Too old. Tulowitzki probably goes in that roup with Hardy and Drew but his problems this year are pretty bad.
Rollins is only 29. I always wonder why age is emphasized so much for baseball (at least like it’s as important a factor as in football or basketball). Baseball is a game old men can play and play well. Even tough positions like SS. Just look at Ripken, Larkin, Omar, and numerous others who have played very well into their late 30s.
jhonny’s gonna end up close to 60-65 xbh

The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, are “kicking around” the idea of adding Indians righty Paul Byrd, according to major-league sources. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the Yankees and Indians had not yet exchanged names, but a deal could come together quickly if the Yankees decided to pursue it.
The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies. For the Yankees, Byrd would be a potential upgrade over right-hander Darrell Rasner.
we could snag some low level prospect or two

If Byrd would be a type-B free agent, the Indians are probably better off just grabbing an upper level talent from the Yankees.
And here’s how ridiculous the Elias free agent rankings are…. The following stats are used to rank pitchers: Total games (total starts + 0.5 * total relief appearances), IP, Wins, W-L Percentage, ERA, Strikeouts

I’m unclear on why they did that. I think the information on the money must be wrong and they’re just clearing payroll.
I’m not really sure what’s up with the money part. I guess that’s the key—if they’re still paying Griffey, they’re idiots. If they’re at least clearing his $4 mil this year (plus $4 mil buyout for next year), then they’re making out OK.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
salary dump. richar is a fringe-2B (no need with brandon phillips on your roster) and masset might be a back of the rotation guy. they got nothing in terms of talent, so i agree with the masses that it’s financially motivated.
This is what I’ve heard. They’re waiting on approval from the Commissioner’s office, which means there’s more than $1m changing hands.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
griffey has a $4M buyout at the end of the year attached to a $16M option that has no chance of being picked up. the white sox are probably paying the rest of his 2008 salary and the reds are probably taking care of the buyout.
“I understand what Yao said, but I’m still ghetto,” Artest said, according to the report. “That’s not going to change. I’m never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don’t think he’s ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture. Once Yao Ming gets to know me, he’ll understand what I’m about.Link
“If you go back to the brawl, that’s a culture issue right there,” Artest added, according to the report. “Somebody was disrespecting me, so he’s got to understand where I’m coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed.”
reading that deal is dead for a variety of reasons: the Pirates are asking for too much (also killing the ManRam trade), the Rays are unwilling to part with any top minor-league talent (their top 6 prospects), and the Blue Jays are now apparently getting into the Bay rumors. Apparently, Jason Bay is Canadian.

I mean, Ramirez—> Bay doesn’t really improve the team. It does give them a LF for 2009. But without Grabow, what are the Sox really gaining?
I think they see the lack of Manny as a net gain, since he’s a distraction. Apparently some media guy managed to pry a quote from the always tight-lipped Curt Schilling saying that it’d probably be for the best if Manny got traded. Surprising, I know, because Schilling seems like such a likeable guy.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
I agree with what you said, but the Red Sox won’t make a move just for the sake of making a move. They’ve seen this game before. Theo and company will not make a deal in which they feel they come out on the short end.
And his throws generally go where he intends for them to go.

Updated 1:21 p.m.: Yankees unlikely to land ByrdBarring a last-minute change, the Indians are unlikely to trade right-hander Paul Byrd before the 4 p.m. ET non-waiver deadline.
The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, “kicked around” the idea of adding Byrd, but their interest appears minimal, according to major-league sources.
The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies.
Byrd, 5-10 with a 4.93 ERA, could be moved during the August trading period. He is unlikely to be claimed on waivers due to his $7.5 million salary.
I thought Jay predicted that Byrd would go in a post-deadline deal after clearing waivers.

I can’t figure out why he’d necessarily clear waivers—in August he’ll only be owed, what, a couple million? It’s not like he’s totally worthless, I could see someone trying to claim him to block a trade & potentially get some average-ish innings for the remainder of the season.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
By August, most teams have filled their budget. Less teams are in contention. And Byrd doesn’t have to clear waivers. If a team claims the player, you can work out a deal with that team (assuming the player you want in return clears waivers; more likely, Cleveland would be getting a non-40man player, so the returning player clearing waivers is a non necessity).
Obvious statement of the day:
“Fasano not being held at first by Cabrera”
I would love to see Fasano try to steal a base, just to see how many feet he’d be out by. I mean, it’s only 90 feet from first to second, and he’s probably got a 10 foot lead.. so.. 30 feet, maybe?
