Tribe signs Weaver to AAA
"With trade rumors continuing to circulate around C.C. Sabathia, you may have wondered who would take the big lefty's spot in the rotation if he was indeed traded. Well, the Indians provided themselves with an option today by signing right-hander Jeff Weaver to a minor league contract and sending him to Class AAA Buffalo."

Oh, and he’s gotta be better than Byrd.
Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.
or worse, having 2 Byrd’s in the rotation at once

Also, another signee, according to Ocker:
“The Indians signed right-handed reliever Preston Larrison, who had an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Larrison, the Tigers’ second-round pick in 2001, was 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 games at Triple-A Toledo. He has been assigned to Buffalo.”
Looks like a Slocum/Stanford type … has been hanging around the high minors for a few years, pretty effective but not projectable as a decent major leaguer based on his age and peripherals. Turned 27 in November and was a six-year free agent, re-signed with the Tigers.
Converted to a reliever back in 2006 and hasn’t started a game since.

Here’s Weaver’s stat line for 2008 AAA:
W/L: 2-4 9GS 55IP 64H 38ER HR9 20BB 37K 6.22ERA 1.53WHIP
Pretty awful.
I dunno. Even when we do get good starting pitching we lose. Unless, of course we get a complete game outta the starter.
Just more deck chair re-arranginng.
Resident LGT beer kinda sewer
As you can see, Weaver pitched this year in AAA for Milwaukee. Tom Haudricourt (the guy who keeps bringing up Taylor Green) has this to say:
Had Weaver pitched well and prompted the Brewers to call him up, they might not be pursuing Sabathia right now. Baseball can be a funny game at times.
Should LaPorta go into the HOF with an Indians cap, we can all write Jeff Weaver a very nice thank you note.

From the wire story:
Known for his fragile mindset, Weaver owns a career record of 93-114 and a 4.72 ERA in 284 games.
So at least he has that going for him…
Not a big deal, obviously. This is a low-risk signing; if Weaver pitches okay, he gives them some depth at starter. I don’t know that this means someone’s getting dumped or sent to the minors (Byrd/Sowers) or that Carmona isn’t on schedule. I think it’s about creating an option. Most likely outcome? Nothing.
