Has anyone else watched this HBO mini-series on John Adams? It's absolutely incredible.
Anyways, the point is: Paul Giamatti as John Adams looks exactly like Travis Hafner, especially when he takes his wig off. There are no good web images of this but I swear to god. Hafner is portraying John Adams.
Can anyone attest to this?

That explains why Hafner couldn’t hit the ball out of the infield.

He must have hurt his shoulder spinning to face camera 3.

I watched this mini-series when it took the Wire’s spot back in March. It is fantastic. Usually historical films and mini-series are maudlin and overly romanticized. This was a fantastic show and I would say it appeals to a much wider audience than the usual historical epic.

I’m watching the series right now on DVD. The first two episodes were extremely well-done, showing the full-formed personalities of the Founding Fathers, not just the idealized portraits that are often depicted. If anything, showing their flaws makes us appreciate them even more.

The portrayal of the intrigue leading up to the Declaration was absolutely hypnotic. Very cool stuff.

Could they have picked anyone worse to portray John Adams? This is one of the most egregious miscasting since Tony Curtis was cast as a 12th century English squire. This alone made watching this particular mini-series impossible for me.

Really? Who do you think of as a good choice to portray John Adams?

Well rather than have an American actor do a ersatz-English/American accent why not try a Brit? Like this guy. He’s a much better actor than Giamatti and still has that gnome look, I imagine he’d do a much better job than Bart’s son.

I don’t think Dexter Fletcher would do it for me. His face is much too thin and excess prosthetics look goofy, as with Washington’s nose in this thing.
I buy Giamatti as it. I tend to like him.
Really, the answer is always Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I’ll give you this: PSH has got the wispy-lisp down. I don’t think he could pull off the Brit thing as well. Did you see Fletcher in “Band of Brothers”? He pulled off the American accent very well. In fact I didn’t suspect he was a Brit until the final scene where they’re all playing baseball. He throws like a girl.

I read something from the director a few months back about how they felt Giamatti was the perfect fit: diminutive, pudgy, balding – much like Adams himself, who was a giant regardless. It was the right pick.

I am with you on this one. I can’t watch because I can’t buy Paul Giamatti as John Adams.

Whatever you feel about casting Giamatti as Adams, Stephen Dillane as Jefferson was a perfect fit.

True.
My wife had the same reaction about Giamatti. Actually, not that it was bad casting, just that she couldn’t look at the screen without thinking, “Hey, Paul Giamatti in a funny hat!”
Weirdly, Giamatti may be too famous, or perhaps too distinctive, to play a figure like Adams.

So they would have been better off casting Travis Hafner?
