looking more forward to the Brewers game and the Akron box score than Cleveland/Detroit, to be honest.

I still think CC will struggle today, given the playoff-type pressure on this start.

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.

Drive down his value. Get him a rep as not being a big-game pitcher. Disappointed with his offers from NY and Boston, CC re-signs with CLE.

Yah, I’m seriously debating picking up the MLB package to watch CC pitch in Milwaukee … if they can ever un-screw up their ALCS download debacle.

Doesn’t look like we’ve got one.

by fleerdon on Jul 8, 2008 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The guys on the 40-man roster who aren’t injured and aren’t on the 25 are
Zach Jackson, Reid Santos, Tony Sipp, Scott Lewis, Wyatt Toregas, Michael Aubrey, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Brad Snyder.

Jackson, Aubrey, Cabrera, and Snyder are all in the game for Buffalo right now. Sipp and Lewis are recovering from injuries, it won’t be them. Toregas and Santos are on the roster at Akron, I guess they’re possibilities, but I’m guessing they’ll add somebody who wasn’t on the 40-man roster before tonight.

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Jul 8, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Couldn’t it quite likely just be the activation of Scott Elarton?

by JRontherim on Jul 8, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be. Lewis is a dark horse for that question-mark rotation spot next year; I’m interested to see if he gets a call-up this season. Santos was recently, and rightfully, demoted—he’s unlikely.

by fleerdon on Jul 8, 2008 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d imagine it’s Elarton and we go with an extra arm today (rightfully so with Sowers on the mound), and then Mastny gets sent down tomorrow for a bat.

Zach Jackson’s pitched 2 shutout innings in relief so far, for what it’s worth. Only allowed one hit.

I posted in the other thread, I think Oakland’s organizational efficiency is a factor here too. Beane doesn’t struggle to find warm bodies to put up good to average numbers nor does he struggle to find innings eaters.

So why not take your big trade chip and try to get the impact guy?

Was Gaudin included for Chicago’s benefit or to clear space/money for Oakland?

That catcher will probably end up an MVP.

Look at it as if he hadn’t played in Cleveland this year. You’d be saying, if he can just be a little more patient in the second half, he’ll be primed for ‘09.

by fleerdon on Jul 8, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s 22, in AAA, and holding his own just fine. Add in his big failure to start the year, and he’s rebounded nicely.

this gets to a post i have been meaning to post in the “why it’s good to lose now” thread. it doesn’t matter much if we win or lose from here on out. but the performances of our players do matter. we want laffey and sowers to look good. we want gutierrez to start hitting big homers again. we want big league choo to look big league for awhile. we want garko to not be a pile of turd. we want carmona, hafner, and vic back and playing well. all because they help us greatly moving into next season. and if these happen, we’ll win games. if they don’t, we’ll lose games. so while wins and losses don’t matter much, the underlying performances do, and we want those to be good.

Well this is interesting.

I just got a text from a guy I know who lives in Huntsville, Alabama—a Cubs fan, oddly enough—who was at the Huntsville Stars (AA, where LaPorta came from) game last night. He wanted to let me know that he ended up meeting and chatting with an Indians scout while he was there.

I quizzed him a little bit for info. They spoke for only a brief time. The scout said he was here scouting the PTBNL.

This is of course puzzling because neither Green nor Brantley were there. Of course the scout wasn’t at liberty to say who he was scouting specifically.

Fausto, Lee, Laffey, Byrd… don’t we need Sowers in there anyway?

by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 8, 2008 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s just the problem. Sowers really needs to become a major league pitcher or the Indians are going to have to expend resources on starters (I don’t think Byrd will be back next year), which, given their bullpen and the state of their offense, they can’t really afford. I was hoping he was going to settle down, but it doesn’t look like it at all.

by peter m on Jul 8, 2008 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with all of this. I just don’t know what Fausto had to do with Sowers.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 8, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I was hoping maybe Sowers would get sent down if Fausto came back. Even if they trade Byrd, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have Sowers get shelled continuously in the majors. Maybe the bullpen? Anything.

Way to respond to Wedge’s challenge, boys. We needed to make a move, and we run the table, with a shot tomorrow for an 0-8 “make or break” trip.

In honor of CC, in honor of the Brew Crew, I’m cracking a Dortmunder.

If I was a millionaire athlete traded out of Cleveland, I’d have to have cases of GLBC shipped to me weekly. .... Daily.

The Jesuits at St. I used to have a GLBC truck deliver to their place on W. 30th once a month. It was glorious, even in my teenage any-beer-is-good-beer days.

I’m drinking a Breckenridge Brew Vanilla Porter in honor of my life sucking (more specifically, the Tribe sucking and bar studying sucking away my will to live).

C.C. has himself in a bit of a jam now…

CC snares your puny line drive.

The double play bails out cc again.

Sabathia strikes out PH Hawpe to end the inning. Swears a lot into his glove as he leaves the mound. I don’t know why I like when he does that, but I do.

As of right now it’s just a quality start. 6 IP, 3 ER, 5 BBs, 5 Ks.

One of the runs unearned.

The ‘control issue’ pops up again in a big game. Hope he can fix that.

And 97 pitches for CC.

Reading the Brew Crew thread, they sold 27,000 tickets yesterday for tonights game. damn!

Wow. Riske extremely excited in an interview the Brewers’ network just showed. I didn’t know this, but apparently the two are BFFs.

if Riske blows it, I’m sure it won’t be the first time he’s blown a CC lead.

Dear Mr. Sabean, I hear you have a reputation of being stupid. Want to deal Lincecum or Cain? You can pick THREE of these 4 players for either: Borowski, Dellucci, Blake, Byrd.

I don’t think C.C. being gone has sunk in for me yet. It still feels like he plays with us and we just sent him on a scouting expedition or something.

I hope he brings back pelts, cheese and a 1b that can hit for power.

Get a can opener for Jhonny.

He’s actually brought back one of those things.

Ryan—

Instead of this game recap, I’d rather see a Brewer’s one.

Just think, if CC were still here, we still would have lost by 1 run.

by Toxicadam on Jul 8, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

Damn near as many posts about the Brewers game as the Indians/Detroit contest. Two months ago I wouldn’t have believed it.

Clearly the fans, along with the players, have lost interest.

I think you nailed it. It’s not even about results, my interest is very much aligned with the interest of the team
