Elarton out "indefinitely", Juan Rincon to be recalled.
The Indians say Scott Elarton has a non-baseball-related medical condition and will be out indefinitely. Fingers crossed that it's nothing too bad.
I know there had been some speculation that Elarton would take CC's vacated roster spot, but Indians.com says it's going to be Juan Rincon.

Hello thejamootz,
Thanks for the info. – hopefully, everything with Elarton will be okay.
In the meantime, we get to see if Rincon can find his dominating form that he had for several seasons with the Twins – hopefully, he will.
Speaking of Rincon, I didn’t happen to see the exact terms of his contract – do we have him for next year as well, or just the rest of this year?
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

Since you didn’t warn me, I am offended.

And I have no idea what monetary value to assign to his post.

It was originally a minor league deal, so I think it’s pretty safe to assume it’s just the rest of 2008

I’m going to need to get a much much bigger computer if somebody posts a diagram of the COT with Juan Rincon’s place marked on it.

Not to worry. He’s been pretty awful in Buffalo.

He was on the restricted list for “personal issues,” but I can’t imagine someone being placed on the DL for a non-physical reason. And even injuries that weren’t baseball-related—moving deer meat up stairs, sneezing too hard, washing your car—have been reported before.
Can someone go on the DL for a random medical condition? I’m thinking along the lines of Greinke. He never went on the DL, did he?

Could be mental health problems; the Ryan Tucker situation with the Browns, in other words.

This is what I’m getting at by referencing Greinke. Can you be DL’d for that?

Don’t know, to be honest. I would think so, though, if there were a medical diagnosis that supported it.

Yeah, Greinke was on the 60-day DL for "personal reasons".
Heck, Mark Wohlers was DLed for "inability to pitch", so I can’t imagine they’re very strict when something is obviously wrong.

What about substance abuse? Doesn’t the MLB have a program that allows players to come forward and get help? Maybe that’s what is going on here.

that’s what i was thinking as well, though i can’t seem to recall anyone doing the in-season rehab thing in a while. i wonder what josh hamilton’s status with the d-rays was during his year or two of getting high…though the policies for the minors could be different.

So who is the fifth pitcher in the rotation? Lee / Laffey / Byrd / Sowers / ??
Seems like someone (Slocum?) needs to go back down for a starter on Saturday. Or do we do bullpen by committee Saturday and figure it out after the All Star break?

Bizzaro World
Up is down, Black is white…. Does anyone else feel like this year is most upside down year ever. Tampa Bay is the best team in baseball and Casey Blake is our RBI leader. We need George Costanza in our front office. Maybe we can hire him away from the Yankees. Why not make the complete opposite decision the rest of the year. We might make the World Series. Who am I kidding??!
