Kevin Bacon-ing the Franchise
An offshoot of Jay's Timeline: Acquiring the New Champs from last year.
Acquiring the 2008 Cleveland Indians Franchise
As I don’t have access to the Dominican League Info, I will only be discussing the Gulf Coast League on up to the show.
A few glossary items.
(YYYY-XX) = the year drafted by Cleveland and the round drafted.
(aFA YYYY) = amateur free agent signing and year (these may not all be accurate)
(mFA YYYY) = minor league free agent signing
(FA YYYY) = major league free agent signing
Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 05 would be 2006)
One degree - Cleveland drafted or signed them
Two or more degrees - acquired in a trade, etc.

Well as you can see, we have some very interesting trails of acquisitions. Now Jay may argue about the trail after Bud Black. We did sign him as a FA for 1989 season. But we did acquire him the previous summer. I count that as a re-signing.
If and when Barfield gets dealt, that 11 degrees hopefully will keep growing.
Unfortunately, the most ancient trail, Vizquel, will most likely wither away since I don’t expect to get a whole lot for John Drennen or Jensen Lewis. Pretty cool that Lewis can trace his origins back all the way back to a Ray Fosse draft pick in 1965. That must be one of the longest trails in baseball (and no I am not researching that).
Hope you all enjoy this read.
Dean
Edit:
According to Baseball America, we have also signed the following 2008 draft picks:
Trey Haley (2008-02), Zach Putnam (2008-05), Tim Fedroff (2008-07), Jason Rodriguez (2008-15), TJ House (2008-16), Nate Reckangel (2008-19), Bryce Stowell (2008-22), Roberto Perez (2008-33), Eddie Burns (2008-39), Tim Palinscar (2008-40)

Hey, man, your article, your rules … yet another massive time-waster for everyone!
The main difference between this and my list, other than being well sorted out for each player, is that you’re tracing players back through compensatory draft picks, which I chose not to do. As for Black, you’ve actually spotted an inconsistency in my list - the only two players on it (I think) who were re-signed by the club right after becoming free agents are Black and Wickman (twice), and I treated them differently, noting Wickman’s trade acquisition and subsequent re-signings. The reason, I’m embarrassed to say, is that I just failed to notice that Black was re-signing and originally had been acquired by trade - so I’m actually going to update the article right now with Black’s full lineage.
I would suggest that you clarify the numbered steps to “see” ... for example step #4 under Gutierrez could say “4. to 10. See Westbrook (2 to 8).
Okay, I fixed it, both the main timeline and the Westbrook/Gutierrez/Barfield breakout … kind of funny that nobody noticed before now that the very first line was essentially a mistake. This extends the lineage of the 2007 club back another 11.5 years for a total of 30, and it’s also just cool to get Tabler and Dybzinski in there.
By the way, you misspelled Drennen, like, four times.
Hopefully Jay you can use this for your option/timeclock stuff.
Just curious, if we sign a Venezuelen at 16 yo into one of the acadamies, does the 6 year minor league clock start ticking then? Or when he reaches the Rookie League of higher?
The academies are for unsigned players — your staff develops relationship with players, which then gives you a leg up on signing the best ones when they turn 16.
I’m not sure of the exact rule about minor league free agents, but my guess is that it’s basically the same. Remember, though, it’s really more like 6.5 years, because there isn’t a full season left when the signing period hits.
Only way the trail keeps moving is that if and when Drennen and Lewis move on, that either one of them are dealt for other pieces.
Drennen, unless he improves greatly, more than likely is released as a minor league free agent.
Lewis, I just don’t see him garnering anything in a trade, unless he is a smaller piece in a blockbuster type deal (3 for 2, etc.). He won’t net anything as a compensation draft pick, unless he becomes a closer. JMO
