I’m not rec’ing the news itself… i’m rec’ing the two-word byline.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.

If they were going to trade him now, why not 2 weeks ago? The mind boggles.

I’m sure they tried but they probably didn’t get any offers they found acceptable. Now, two weeks later, either the D-backs are more deperate and raised their offer or the Reds realized they need to get something for him and lowered their expectations.

I sure hope the 2 PTBNL are of some signicance, becasue the one guy announced doesn’t sound earth-shatterring. Maybe pre-injury, but ….

I’m pretty sure both guys have to be off the 40-man…so whatever they are, they’re probably not close to the majors.

I believe they can be on the 40-man, but not the 25-man. Something like that. Also can’t be guys drafted within the past year, which means it could be someone they drafted last year who signed late.

Actually, what I was trying to say (and not so eloquently obviously), is that the two guys coming back are hopefully of somewhat significance becasue if the Reds just kept Dunn, they would have gotten Type A compensation back for him.
That is all, carry on.

Dunn was claimed, Byrd made it through waivers. Surely, this helps Shapiro’s negotiating position with regards to Byrd. Lots of teams are weak in the rotation, and an in-division trade is even possible.

Hello odradek,
I think you mean Juan Uribe, the White Sox 2B.
I was thinking also that an intra-division trade is possible. The White Sox, after the loss of Contreras, would probably be looking for a starter with more experience and success than Lance Broadway, their 2005 1st-Round pick, or knuckleballer Charlie Haeger.
I was thinking the Twins could be possible as well, though their young rotation is currently doing well, but Byrd would provide a veteran starter, and arguably, is better than Hernandez.
I suppose even the Tigers could be a possibility if they can get closer to the White Sox and Twins, since their rotation, outside of Galarraga, has been pretty erratic and inconsistent this season.
But certainly, I could see an intra-divisional trade with any of those three. If not them, the Yankees would probably be a likely suitor as well. I wonder if the Red Sox could be too, being that Wakefield is on the 15-day DL and Buchholz has been struggling in most of his recent starts.
Just my 2 cents.

Considering the way that Byrd pretty much pwns them, I would think the Tigers would be very interested in Byrd if they were going to buy a starter to make a run. At least it would keep the Tribe from throwing him against them.
Andy Marte is free at last! Now, if only he could hit a breaking ball...

Indiansfan, you’re right. Sorry—I was confused. Jose died in a plane crash a couple years ago. I meant Juan, el gordo.
I don’t think the Twins would be in the mix. They have a pretty good stockpile of pitchers right now.

Didn’t take Bavasi long to rub off on his new team.

This is not a classic Bavasi move. The classic Bavasi move is acquiring a veteran to help your team finish 10 games out of first place instead of 15.

Yes, this is actually a very good move for the D-backs. They need Dunn’s bat to win the West because their offense is terrible (10th in NL in OBP, SLG, and runs scored).

I’m waiting for the Reds to sign Jose Vidro.

It was leaked last night that Micah Owings may be one of the players (if he clears waivers) or after the season.
if that is the case, the deal looks much better for the Reds. I like Owings bat in Cincinnati ;)

I’m pretty sure it’s a case of just waiting until the offseason if Micah doesn’t clear waivers. They can leave him in AAA until then. It’s a bit awkward if you’re Micah, but it works.
Micah’s no shining star, but I’d take a chance on him.

I remember when we had a Micah. He sucked.

Yeah. Totally.
I followed the draft closely that year, 2002, for the first time. By 2004, I had figured it out: “Oh, I get it — there’s no reason to follow the draft closely. Got it!”
