Olympic Game Thread: August 14, 2008
The U.S. takes on Cuba in Game 10 of the Men's Preliminaries. Will Matt LaPorta continue to make us almost forget the unending horror show that is your 2008 Cleveland Indians?
We'll find out, if we ever get out of the top of the first inning in Beijing, where the skies look kind of blue and this huge bright thing in the heavens is casting shadows on the ground. And I am apparently still not at 75 words yet so here is another sentence.

Jeremy Cummings warming in the bullpen as Cahill gets a force at home to keep it 2-0 with bases still loaded. Right now would be a really cool time for a strikeout.

I have a friend who’s a “glogger” for CBSSportsline during the summer. Minimum wage summer work. He just repeats whatever the color guys say in most games.
I wonder what this glogger is cribbing from?
I’d guess the exact same place, though it seems like he does get some little shots in on his own here and there.

But there are no color guys, are there?
To clarify, my friend watches the actual game on Extra Innings, which he gets for free, and then just repeats what the commentators of that game are saying.
That’s kind of a cool gig. How’d he get it?

LaPorta, sporting the shades.

Reminding me a bit of that douche free agent David Keith from Major League II.

NBC has gymnastics in high-def and we are all crowded around 14" screens to watch baseball. Completely ridiculous.
Proud supporter of the Cleveland.
Our priorities are seriously out of whack.
Could be an Indians game, though. :)

I just don’t get it. Gymnastics is such a niche event (my wife, a gymnast, is loving it) and baseball is the national pastime and yet gymnastics gets the coverage.
Proud supporter of the Cleveland.
baseball doesn’t have 16-19 year old girls in leotards.

People seem to prefer Olympic sports that culminate at the Olympics as opposed to a sport which the main event is the championship of its professional sports league
I understand your point (especially when using Tennis as an example). But winning the gold in Ice Hockey and Basketball are still pretty big deals.
Got the laptop by the TV to watch both.

It’s the first time LaPorta’s presence in the outfield has done any damage, but he is a significant liability out there. A first baseman in college, he was moved to the outfield after being drafted by the Brewers, who already had Prince Fielder. The Indians have decided to keep him there.
Yay. :-|

Do we root for Canada or US tomorrow?
US is going to have to step it up just to make the medal round.
“Let’s go U.S.A.” doesn’t fit into the standard “CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP” cheer. :(

In case you haven’t heard, the IBAF is trying something very, very different this year. Beginning in the 11th, teams will automatically begin each inning with two men on base. The team will also be able to begin the 11th with whichever hitter it wants at the plate.
In most cases, that means the team will choose to have the leadoff and No. 2 hitters on base, with the No. 3 hitter up.
The bizarre rule is meant to prevent particularly long games and get back in the good graces of the Olympics.

Yeah, this looks great. Is there a way to get it fullscreen? I can’t seem to figure one out.

Hit “enlarge video” on the bottom left of the player. It will get you half of the way there.

So, if no one scores in the 11th, do we go to penalty kicks?

Clutch hit in his last atbat though. Kept the rally going long enough for his teammates to screw it up.
Alright who’s pumped for tonight?!?!?!

USA tied for 5th with Canada and Taiwan after 3 games. Cuba and Korea are unbeaten and Japan has lost only to Cuba.
USA needs to win the next 3 to minimize the chance of being knocked out of the medal round by the Japanese in the final preliminary round game. Taiwan was shocked by its loss to China, and that result may affect the battle for the #4 seed in the medal round.
USA faces Canada tonight, China early Monday, Taiwan early Tuesday, and finally Japan early Wednesday.
Cuba started the 11th with the 8th and 9th spots as the baserunners, using a PR for the 8th spot (which was the catcher ) on 2nd base.
USA put the 9th and 1st batters on base and NIx (the #2 hitter) was first up, fouling the ball off his face attempting to bunt. The team started with 12 position players and is now down to 11.
