OK I thought I clicked on fencing and I got wrestling instead? interesting.
I am really excited to see Weglarz!. More so even than LaPorta.
Only changes for us is that Stubby is leading off instead of batting 2nd, Adam Stern finally goes to the 9-hole where he belongs, and Garcia gets moved from 9 to 2.

Well Stubby of course was a late-blooming career minor leaguer who had a cup of coffee with the Cardinals. Currently a hitting coach with the Astros single-A affiliate. Hasn’t played pro baseball since 2006.
Garcia is a scrub shortstop in the Mets system.
And Saunders is a highly-touted AAA-prospect with the Mariners. Hit a homer against the Cubans.

I remember this Stern guy — the Red Sox Rule 5’ed him off the Braves a few years ago, sort of a poor man’s Coco Crisp. Apparently a free agent now, which makes this kind of like a glorified independent league stint for him.
LaPorta does take a nice cut at the 0-2 pitch there, but pulls it just foul. He’s been trying to pull every pitch he’s seen.
This sounds weirdly familiar.

Actually, Friends was very highly regarded by professionals in the field. While rarely innovative or brilliant, the writing, acting and directing were all at a very high level, very consistently, over a very long time. You could hardly find an episode that wasn’t pretty well crafted.
If Friends was well crafted, the Kansas City Royals over the past ten years and the LA Clippers over their existence have been well crafted.
And I said people with taste, not professionals in the field.

First, it certainly wasn’t.
Second, that is basically like saying Glavine shouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame because he wasn’t as good as Maddux. Seinfield had all the commercial success that Friends did and was also innovative and influential — it’s a much bigger deal. Having said that, was it really as consistently well executed as Friends? No. Quite a bit of it, especially in the first few seasons, was pretty amateurish.
No, I feel like Friends is like Nomar or Jeter: widely loved, and certainly professional, but besides fan appeal, what is there?

The thing is this: 50 million fans or whatever, an enormously successful run by any measure, one of the longest-run, most-watched shows in history.
On top of that, the creative pros behind it are well respected by their peers.
What is there really to criticize beyond that? It wasn’t erudite enough for you? Dude … it is a sitcom.
The characters were boring and predictable, the jokes got old quickly. We were told we had to love it after 9/11 because it was comfort food television, it launched a bunch of regrettable careers, and it was agonizingly low brow.

Words do not do justice to my hatred for Boston sports teams.
by FaustosSinkingFastball on Aug 16, 2008 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions
I personally couldn’t have cared less about whether they got together — I was curious as to the decision the creators would make about that, and how, but I could say the same thing about the end of The Sopranos.
Okay, clearly you have some personal axe to grind with this show. I get that you hate it, and I don’t mind your saying so. But to be so strident and insistent on its awfulness just seems misplaced considering essentially the whole world disagrees with you.
The 9/11 thing, I have no idea where that’s coming from. Friends had already been on the air for seven years at that point and was already immensely popular, closely behind ER and Seinfeld. If people did cling to it after 9/11 — I have no recollection of this — it’s probably because ER was depressing, Seinfeld was already off the air, and Friends was both funny and harmless.
Jennifer Aniston has been in a bunch of good movies, and I can’t see describing any of their careers as “regrettable” other than Courtney Cox, who is pretty close to a no-talent hack.
Finally, while Friends certainly was never high-brow for a moment, if you think it was low-brow, then you pretty clearly have never seen any other network TV program other than Seinfeld. This show’s brow towers above 95% of everything out there, that’s the reality. Like I said … it’s a sitcom.

95% of everything is crap. i like that.
by Gradyforpresident on Aug 16, 2008 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions
I admit I am out of place with the rest of the world, but that would apply to most of my cultural tastes anyway, so I don’t feel too bad.
The 9/11 thing comes from how its ratings went to like Olympics ratings for a year after 9/11 and it was the epitome of all the “comfort food” America was instinctively falling back on afterward. I understand why people bought into it, but it seemed like we were supposed to be watching it since everyone was.
It isn’t a stretch to say, everything Jennifer Aniston has done since then has sucked, Joey the series was suicide-inducing, David Schwimmer is the biggest wimp ever, and the rest have fallen into obscurity.
I know Friends wasn’t any more low-brow than anything else, but it reminded me of Gilmore Girls in that a lot of people felt smart that they got the jokes, but it was really not high level at all.
And yes, 95% of everything does suck.
Words do not do justice to my hatred for Boston sports teams.
by FaustosSinkingFastball on Aug 16, 2008 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions
Just to name a few … Office Space, Rock Star, The Good Girl, The Break-Up … those didn’t suck. I don’t think hardly anythign she’s done has actually just flat-out sucked, although a lot of it wasn’t anything special.
Your comments re: Schwimmer are pretty much did on Christopher’s critique of Jon Favreau, to wit: WTF are you even talking about anyway? He’s a wimp? How would you know, and what does that have to do with anything anyway? THought he was quite good in a limited role on Curb Your Enthusiasm, which no doubt you love with your superficially intellectual judgments on everything.
Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with comfort food. You can’t sit around sipping single malt and listening to Giant Steps every day, can you?
Man, I wish I could hear the dugout chatter in my right speaker when watching MLB games …

Chris Reitsma? ? ? ? ?
so…unemployed pitchers work too. Love the quality of the talent on these 2 clubs
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
Reitsma, who had had five elbow surgeries, is expected to end his pitching career at the conclusion of the Olympics. He’s saved 37 games and posted a 4.70 ERA in seven big-league seasons.

Take me out to the Ball game…should so be in Chinese
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
According to NPR, the chant most of the Chinese fans yell translates as “China more gas!” or “China more oil”

So Reitsma can’t hit the strike zone to save his life…and you’re bunting. Don’t worry, our manager is even worse.

I hope Dexter serially kills this pitch.

I guess you have to be here to enjoy it, but the drunken harridan across the courtyard from me (who loudly yells at her boyfriend/brother/husband/whatever for hours almost every single night) blends in almost perfectly with the crowd noise on this coverage. For a second, I was astounded who sounded just like her was yelling at someone else nearby.

I’ll tell you who the real victor in this one is: the continent of North America.

Meanwhile, on the other field, Taiwan, which was upset by China, is in a 0-0 battle
with Cuba going into the 6th inning.
The Taiwanese are waving their real flag and not the phonies from the opening ceremonies (don’t tell the Chinese).
The managing in a lot of sports has been suspect: the US men’s soccer coach made a ton of blunders, and a bunch of people blamed him for our elimination in group stage.

Haha Rheal Cormier? I’m sure Jay could give us a nice little essay about him.

Jay, I was shocked when I found out you liked Friends. But then again you liked A History of Violence, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

I like lots of stuff, but as a creative pro, I understand when something is well done even if it isn’t exactly to my taste.
My wife likes the show, as do several very smart friends of mine. I find it to be harmless and well-done, and I find that there’s at least one attractive woman in a tight shirt on-screen just about every minute of every episode.
Well okay, soon we get to see that crazy ass two-runners on rule. Hang tight, North America.

I’d get upset, but when our Olympics hopes basically rest on the shoulders of Cormier and Reitsma….yeah expectations can’t be too high.

Ahahaha, did somebody actually go to the trouble of singling out Prince Edward Island as being “without style?” While identifying Lake Winnipeg as being “with style” — moreso, evidently, than the rest of Manitoba? I’m so amused by my own confusion.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
