A quick look at new Tribe starter Anthony Reyes' mechanics, courtesy of our buddy and Indians fan Kyle Boddy, whose scouting and mechanics blog Driveline Mechanics went live on the SBN network yesterday. Animated photo courtesy of Chris O'Leary, click through for Kyle's analysis.

Also for your consideration, here's a link with a contrary view of biomechanical analysis in general by a fellow named Graham at Lookout Landing.

One question I have is Chris O’Leary posted the original article about Reyes on 12/01/06. Has anything changed with him since then? He sure appeared to be throwing free and easy in his starts with Cleveland.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

What I said over there:
…I agree with:
I’d say it’s more likely that we should all be taking commentary on pitching mechanics and their relationship to injury with a boulder of salt.
I’ve said over and over again that my analysis of pitching mechanics and injuries that I predict as a result of those mechanics are subject to small sample size – in this case, the n-value is literally always 1. Yes, people share similar traits in anatomy, but we are all built differently enough that the mere definition of acromial line is subjective. However, I do think I have a strong concept of correlation between the two, and with my pitcher risk database project forthcoming, we’ll eventually know if my theories are on the right path.

I’m apply the “shoot first, ask questions later” policy with regard to Reyes. I just want him to be good before I’ll worry about him getting injured, even though I have somewhat high hopes for Reyes. If a mechanical adjustment that reduces injury risk also increases his effectiveness, all the better. But first thing’s first: get American League hitters out.

I’m new to this. I wonder why Reyes is the first to be profiled. Is he a highly unusual or very important case-study? Who’s next? Is the goal to cover everybody?

Reyes is not an important case study, necessarily, no. I have done tons of analyses over at my old Driveline Mechanics site, but I just recently had the site switched over to the SB Nation network. Soon, I’ll be uploading the previous work of pitchers like Brandon Morrow, Tim Lincecum, Justin Duchscherer, Phillipe Aumont, and many others. Thanks!

Maybe we should have clarified, Kyle has done a ton of these, Reyes just happened to be the first one on-deck when he switched over to SBN … and before they got his archives converted to the new site.
At our invitation, Kyle did an analysis of Cliff Lee back in May. You can access another dozen of his profiles here.

Oh, I remember now.
The SB network has become my default sports news / info source. I keep it close to home. Welcome aboard, DM.

I know Reyes hasn’t exactly faced offensive juggernauts, but I’m hoping he make the staff next year.
