what about it? typical developing nation dominated by millitary junta type of thing?

if yer into that kind of thing, the new yorker has a very good article about burma in this week’s mag:

You mean Myanmar?
If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.
i’m not willing to call it that. the military rulers deserve evisceration; i will not validate their new name for the country.
yeah I don’t think you can really call it by that name unless you accept the millitary dictatorship.

It’s actually a movie about a big DC firm, fronted by James Carville, and how they won the election for the man who was promptly driven from the country within 8 months of election.
It raises real questions about the role of foreign political advisors. It’s also just a fascinatingly intimate portrait of a campaign in a doomed country.

Things I wish:
When it said “fastball” for one of Jackson’s pitches…the first digit of the number accompanying it did not begin with an “8”

Heavy Fastball?

He rubs mercury onto them from the brim of his cap. Bad for his long term health, most definitely. Good for his fastball, maybe.
I think this qualifies as Dark Comedy.

look, if you’re gonna be a royals center fielder named mitch, batting ninth, i think zach jackson has set the precedent that he’s coming inside on you. pretty simple.
(full disclosure: i didn’t realize it had hit him in the face when i posted)

I do love it when Gutz unleashes the fury.

That’s why Jackson was really the lowest-rated “prospect” in the Sabathia trade, and not Brantley/Green/whoever it is to be named later, as Jay and Ryan aptly pointed out when the trade was made.
That’s why I wasn’t overly thrilled when we got him – he’s an arm, but I’m not expecting much. I’m a little higher on Reyes, though he’s probably a long-shot too, but unlike Jackson, Reyes looks like a ML pitcher (most of the time, at least, unlike Jackson). There’s a chance Reyes could fit in; I’m not that optimistic on Jackson, though I hope he proves me wrong, but tonight was not one of those nights, unfortunately.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
To be fair to Jackson, really it was one bad pitch to Aviles that made the outing bad; otherwise, it’s probably a pretty solid outing. At this point, he’s been a bit more useful than I thought he’d be, though he still has to improve quite a bit to really stick, and I’d still give Reyes the edge at this point.
Just my 2 cents.

How about the All Whiff Team:
1B: Ryan Howard
LF: Adam Dunn
CF: Grady
2B: Richie Weeks
DH: Jack Cust
Who am I missing?

Thus far, however, things can change at a MOMENTS notice.
I’d put Weaver on there as well.

i know it’s a bit stale, but doesn’t jason johnson have to have the honorary and all-time top spot on that list?

I think those three and Weaver – I’d probably give Reyes the highest chance of making it, along with maybe Weaver (for a short period as a #5 option). Jackson doesn’t look very impressive, and Bullington has equally bad outings at AAA (I think I would rather try Bullington in the bullpen again – he looked fairly solid there in a SSS when he first came over. It might help him to gain a bit more velocity on his fastball and perform well enough to possibly consider at the ML level, though it’s likely still a long-shot, but almost certainly better than what he is doing as a starter down at AAA right now).
Just my 2 cents.

What kind of baseball team gets more runs than hits before being set down 17 in a row?

Aw fukkerzz … More PH for Marte.

An article over at TheClevelandFan.com suggests that Marte’s plate discipline isn’t really the problem (just behind Marte’s) – it’s just Marte doesn’t hit that well. The guy who did so well in AAA seems to be gone – that’s the main reason why Wedge doesn’t seem to have confidence in him in tight situations.
Plus, Choo does have better plate discipline than Marte, that last swing notwithstanding.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Thank you for mentioning that, but still, it’s an interesting theory, and I have to agree that Marte just doesn’t look skilled in hitting for average, something he never really did that well down at the Minors (i.e. never hit .300+ at any level).
At one time, we thought the young age was the main reason for that, but now, it may have been more indicative of an inability to hit for a high BA. Granted, it’s still a SSS, but Marte has gotten more regular playing time this year than he has since he’s been here, and he still looks inconsistent at the plate and not able to hit for a very high BA. That still is a concern, and likely the reason why Wedge will not allow him to hit in critical situations late in games.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Hopefully, Hafner can keep doing that up here – I’ll take a bunch of 2Bs, along with some HRs. That arguably would be better than what he was giving us late in 2007.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Some may quote the 24 HRs as being a decent season, but I think most are expecting more out of Hafner than what we got in 2007. That’s why I said “arguably,” but I think 99.9% would like more production out of him than we got from him in 2007.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
what I mean is that “haf 1-2 tonight with a 2b, 2 rbi and a bb” is not arguably better than 2007. It WOULD BE better.

Sounds about right, but that’s pretty typical of the internet as a whole, isn’t it?
At a glance I don’t think these are even close to accurate for sites with small / medium sized traffic patterns.
I happen to know that another blog I visit gets just shy of 200,000 unique visitors a month, and it has received more than 50,000 or so a month for several years running by now, yet they only report a 5k count.
Somehow I believe they’re getting the demographics about right (the profiles of Royalsreview, UssMariner, LGT etc, are relatively consistent, as one would expect). I just don’t believe the traffic count.
So when our injured get healthy, which position players do they replace on the roster?

Gonzalez for sure, but Looch, maybe??

did you guys know that David Dellucci is single-handedly responsible for the weakness of the dollar over the last year? pretty interesting…
Michael Moore is in town to investigate it.

Garko is on fire. Good for him.
If you need me, I'll be senselessly rooting for Sizemore 40/40 for the remainder of 2008.
I liked it better when he sucked. Made the banish Garko, let VMart play 1b, and keep Shoppach as C argument much more palatable. I guess it’s a good problem to have.
I could be way off, but the vibe seems to be that we’ll try at least to make one big Type A free agent spash.. a la Fuentes or… frankly I don’t know who else it might be, maybe a third baseman. But Lewis could be the equalizer in terms of a closer signing. He’s got that change up just falling off the table away from left-handed hitters.
Been burned before by relievers who looked good for short stretches: Mastny, Fernando Cabrera, and even Mr. Lewis himself. But the velocity seems back. He seems a little out of control emotionally still, but maybe, finally,
I just figure they have one bullet, as far as one major free agent signing (assuming we can actually coax someone to come here that we REALLY want). If it’s not a closer, and admittedly, I’m leery of using our one bullet for a closer, then who else could we really use. I honestly don’t know… I feel like we could use a free agent third baseman, but I still want to see what Marte can do over the last 6 weeks.
Hey, left at 5-3 down and wow we won, go Tribe.
