The bumperstickers are completely fake. They don’t use Obama’s very consistent style and “O” logo, and c’mon, what are the odds the campaign keeps it this tight and then trusts a Kansas printing company?

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea. I play a lot of indy games and shooters (Battlefield 2 for a year or so). I love RPG’s … but the western RPG has totally sucked since Bioware cashed in and other companies bit the bullet.

I have zero desire to play any of the new generation consoles. All the games look like the same old tired mechanics, with a new coat of paint.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I got a Wii as a wedding gift last year, and I have to admit, I don’t play it much. I am still stuck on PC strategy games.

Have you heard of a Russian company called 1C yet? They are a company that is taking a lot of old classics and revamping them with no graphics. They made a cool remake of the old SSI game Fantasy General. It’s called Fantasy Wars. A hex-based strat game with some rpg mechanics. They are also releasing King’s Bounty remake this fall (a Sega Genesis classic).

http://www.1cpublishing.eu/

You can probably find a demo of Fantasy Wars on there. It didn’t make the store shelves in the US (even though Atari was the publisher).

I went through a FF III/Secret of Mana/Chronotrigger renaissance earlier this year. I didn’t get much done, but man, it was fun.
Do you dig any of the Total War games?

by bewwolv on Aug 22, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, but I completely suck at RTS’s. So I played TW:Rome more like you would play a Civ game (and letting the computer do the battles for me). I suck at micromanaging units.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

TW Rome was fun on a Civ level, but I dug the battles, too. Medieval II lost a lot on the battles, but was better on city building. I used to be a huge Sim fan, do you know if the new Simcity is any good?

by bewwolv on Aug 22, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Simcity Societies? I heard it was an improvement over the last version (4?) but still had some technical issues (unbalance, sluggishness) and is a bit more streamlined (could be good or bad, depending on your playstyle).

I like this one. He came out with a new cd that is pretty good also.

by obobcatu on Aug 22, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s an interesting song. I have a horrible habit of forgetting about great artists from the past when they release new albums. Sometimes they can release some of their best work after they are “done” (commercially speaking).

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that entire CD (Grown Backwards) is really good. It’s one of my favorites in my collection. David Byrne’s stuff is very different than most anything else out there. His new cd is called Everything that Happens Will Happen Today. I think you can download a few of the tracks free here.

I’m totally a homer, but I listened to the tune “Gasoline” on this page a few times on a long drive today.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s fantastic. Some blues and old country mixed in there really give it a familiar feel.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s in reference to the Faces in the Wind song. Oops.

Listening to Gasoline now.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s another favorite of mine. Very unconventional what he does there, slowing down the last line of every verse.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I actually like that “Faces” song a lot more. Gasoline has some good lyrics, but is more of a straight forward rock song. His voice kind of has a Neil Diamond feel to it. That’s not a bad thing.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you know, he’s all about Dylan of course. Those are both from his last record, which is his only fully produced one, and it’s quite diverse in terms of arrangements and production. I was just talking to him about what he wants to do next, and he said sometimes he thinks he wants to do an all-rocker record, sometimes something more elaborate like the last one.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m always confused how or why some of you guys listen to the other team’s broadcasts. Are Manning/Underpants or Hammy that annoying? Or do you live too far away to get the local feeds?

by obobcatu on Aug 22, 2008 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Nobody just listens to the other teams’ broadcasts as far as I know. But out-of-towners generally don’t get to choose which TV broadcast to watch/hear, they give us either one broadcast or the other.

Hey Jay, what about Jordan Brown? Is he just going to be the new Michael Aubrey once we let him go? Or is Aubrey someone we might hold onto and either trade Brown or let him spend another year in AAA?

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t really know — how many weak-ass low-ceiling 1B do we really need on the 40-man, that’s the question.

Aubrey will get a fourth option year if we keep him around, but Brown isn’t even on the 40-man yet. With his weak stats, lack of valuable bench skills and injury history, maybe we just take our chances and expose him to Rule 5.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you think he has any trade value? I mean those previous awards, his past K:BB ration and his (relative) youth have to hold some value for a team. Someone like the A’s?

I ask this, because I believe La Porta or Victor is our 1b of the future and I don’t see how Brown fits into our organization right now.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I can’t see how he’d have any trade value — teams can’t even tell if he’s healthy, and he was always a low-ceiling guy anyway.

Previous awards? Like what?

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Those consecutive “player of the year” awards in his respective league. Maybe that wasn’t such a good bullet point.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah yes, MVP of the Carolina and Eastern Leagues in 2006 and 2007.

I don’t think anyone cares about those awards, per se. I mean, Victor was EL MVP back in 2002, but it’s a little different when you’re a switch-hitting catcher whose OPS is 100 points above the second-best hitter in the league.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Incidentally, check out his minorleaguesplits for 2008 — Sackmann has really jazzed up the site recently. Anyway, you can see that he hasn’t looked particularly good in any month, except in May when he rode a nutty .406 BABIP all the way to an OPS of … 841.

by Jay on Aug 22, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Sackman? Hah. What an unfortunate name.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by Toxicadam on Aug 22, 2008 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe just because it’s late…but Brown seems to suck. Right now the best case scenario seems to be Sean Casey without the plus defense at 1B. He could surprise…but this season has been supremely disappointing for him.

by APV on Aug 23, 2008 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Marlon Byrd and his 38 career homeruns can really admire a homerun that neither ties the game nor puts his team in the lead. Not to mention, it clears the fence by 3 feet.

LaPorta fights off a high fastball for an opposite-field single.
The name on the back of the jersey is the same, but the person currently wearing LaPorta bares to resemblance to the guy who was trying to take every outside fastball he saw down the left-field line in the first half of the tournament
